In terms of scope and granularity of data, two kinds of connectivity models are broadly in vogue for representing power network data, namely, node-breaker model and bus-branch model. This paper examines both the connectivity models from the perspective of common information model (CIM). Although CIM is primarily designed for most detailed node-breaker representation, with certain extensions CIM can be leveraged to achieve a standard, interoperable bus-branch model representation and exchange format. To facilitate this, it is proposed to introduce new class called TopologyBranch. By decoupling the connectivity information and the equipment parameter information, a mechanism for efficient exchange of time varying system models with minimum information transfer between the power control centers is described in this paper. The proposed CIM bus-branch connectivity model has wide applications in an interoperable, decentralized, hierarchical structure of control centers. Three illustrative examples including one on a practical 20-substation model of the 400 kV transmission network of Maharasthra state, India, are then presented for demonstrating the benefits.

CIM-Based Connectivity Model for Bus-Branch Topology Extraction and Exchange

Common Information Model (CIM) is widely adopted by many utilities since it offers interoperability through standard information models. Storing, processing, retrieving, and providing concurrent access of the large power network models to the various power system applications in CIM framework are the current challenges faced by utility operators. As the power network models resemble largely connected-data sets, the design of CIM oriented database has to support high-speed data retrieval of the connected-data and efficient storage for processing. The graph database is gaining wide acceptance for storing and processing of largely connected-data for various applications. This paper presents a design of CIM oriented graph database (CIMGDB) for storing and processing the largely connected-data of power system applications. Three significant advantages of the CIMGDB are efficient data retrieval and storage, agility to adapt dynamic changes in CIM profile, and greater flexibility of modeling CIM unified modeling language (UML) in GDB. The CIMGDB does not need a predefined database schema. Therefore, the CIM semantics needs to be added to the artifacts of GDB for every instance of CIM objects storage. A CIM based object-graph mapping methodology is proposed to automate the process. An integration of CIMGDB and power system applications is discussed by an implementation architecture. The data-intensive network topology processing (NTP) is implemented, and demonstrated for six IEEE test networks and one practical 400 kV Maharashtra network. Results such as computation time of executing network topology processing evaluate the performance of the CIMGDB.

A service-oriented architecture for electric power transmission system asset management

Common Information Model (CIM) is emerging as a standard for information modelling for power control centers. While, IEC 61850 by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is emerging as a standard for achieving interoperability and automation at the substation level. In future, once these two standards are well adopted, the issue of integration of these standards becomes imminent. Some efforts reported towards the integration of these standards have been surveyed. This paper describes a possible approach for the integration of IEC 61850 and CIM standards based on mapping between the representation of elements of these two standards. This enables seamless data transfer from one standard to the other. Mapping between the objects of IEC 61850 and CIM standards both in the static and dynamic models is discussed. A CIM based topology processing application is used to demonstrate the design of the data transfer between the standards. The scope and status of implementation of CIM in the Indian power sector is briefed.

CIM and IEC 61850 integration issues: Application to power systems

Maintaining the integrity of an electrical distribution network for the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) database is a challenging task due to the increasingly changing network topology. Despite the labor-intensive database maintenance that is prone to human error, the use of inaccurate data can lead to erroneous computational results. This paper proposes an automated framework to extract geospatial datasets for SCADA of distribution systems using two standardized exchange formats: (1) Common information model (CIM/XML) which describes the topology, and (2) CIM graphics in scalable vector graphics (SVG) format from the World Wide Web consortium (W3C), which illustrates the dynamic and static geographical schematics. A comparator which determines the changes between different datasets is proposed to avoid importing all data. The proposed framework is evaluated using case studies consisting of thousands of CIM-based elements.

To this end, this paper discusses solutions to some of the challenges in storing and processing large power system network models as native Java objects without sacrificing reliability and robustness. This paper highlights the advantages provided by such a system when dealing with extensions to the CIM standard and overcoming the problems posed with simultaneously maintaining backward compatibility without sacrificing a higher level of detail. This paper also addresses the issue of data processing performance in contrast to other approaches.
