Objective:Data on the effectiveness of antipsychotics in the early phase of schizophrenia are limited. The authors examined the risk of rehospitalization and drug discontinuation in a nationwide cohort of 2,588 consecutive patients hospitalized for the first time with a diagnosis of schizophrenia between 2000 and 2007 in Finland. Method:The authors linked national databases of hospitalization, mortality, and antipsychotic prescriptions and computed hazard ratios, adjusting for the effects of sociodemographic and clinical variables, the temporal sequence of the antipsychotics used, and the choice of the initial antipsychotic for each patient. Results:Of 2,588 patients, 1,507 (58.2%) collected a prescription for an antipsychotic during the first 30 days after hospital discharge, and 1,182 (45.7%, 95% confidence interval [CI]=43.7–47.6) continued their initial treatment for 30 days or longer. A Nationwide Cohort Study of Oral and Depot Antipsychotics After First Hospitalization for Schizophrenia

The current systematic review was performed to determine the specific burdens placed on families of individuals with schizophrenia. Scopus, PubMed, and CINAHL databases were searched, resulting in 21 articles that met inclusion criteria. Results showed that treatment of individuals with schizophrenia poses a burden on families. Most caregivers experienced emotional and financial problems that affected their quality of life. Influencing factors in caregivers were age, sex, educational level, family status, income, time spent with the individual per day, knowledge regarding schizophrenia, attitude, and psychological stress. Influencing factors in individuals with schizophrenia were age, sex, severity of illness, social function, and treatment adherence. Environmental factors were stigma, social support, and professional support from health care providers. Family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia need to be empowered to improve resilience and acceptance in caring for these individuals. Determinants of Burden in Family Caregivers of Individuals With Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review.

Despite its excellent corrosion resistance, B30 copper–nickel alloy is prone to pitting, particularly when exposed to microorganisms. The mechanism underlying the acceleration of pitting in this alloy is not fully understood. In this study, the acceleration of pitting corrosion in B30 copper–nickel alloy caused by a marine microorganism named Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) was investigated using surface analysis and electrochemical techniques. P. aeruginosa significantly accelerated the pitting in B30 copper–nickel alloy, with a maximum pitting depth of 1.9 times that of the abiotic control and a significant increase in pitting density. This can be attributed to extracellular electron transfer and copper–ammonia complex production by P. aeruginosa, accelerating the breakdown of the passivation film.

Abstract vWe assessed the relationship between the posttraumatic growth of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and their care burden. The sample was determined using a “sample calculation formula from groups with a definite universe,” and the study included 146 caregivers. Sociodemographic Data Form, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) were used in the research. The mean PTGI score of the caregivers was 65.23 ± 16.90, while the mean ZBI score was 52.68 ± 13.72. It can be stated that the caregivers of patients with schizophrenia have a moderate care burden, but their posttraumatic growth is above a moderate level. As the posttraumatic growth of caregivers increases, the values of mental stress and disruption of private life, mental strain and restriction, and deterioration in social relations decrease.

The Relationship between Posttraumatic-Growth and Care Burden in Caregivers of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia, a term first introduced by Eugen Bleurer in 1911, is a controversial topic, a symbol of profound behavioral and personality disorders. Although schizophrenia mainly affects the patients, directly, it indirectly affects their caregivers. Because caregivers of subjects with schizophrenia experience significant burden in taking care of the patient, usually over a long period of time, we decided to analyze some of the factors that can impact the perceived level of stress. Our study group consisted of caregivers 124 patients with schizophrenia, interviewed between January 2018 and July 2019. We analyzed demographic, clinical and other medical variables of patients and caregivers. We also evaluated caregivers' burden, using the adapted Zarit interview. The average Zarit score in our study was 42.36±8.64, which shows moderate to high burden. Several factors that influence the perceived burden of the caregiver have been identified, such as patient gender, age of onset, patient and caregiver marital status, patient level of education and social functioning, caregiver age, somatic comorbidities and therapeutic compliance of the patient.
