There has been considerable public and scientific interest in the use of phytochemicals derived from dietary components to combat human diseases. They are naturally occurring substances found in plants. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phytochemical commonly found in fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and rice bran. It arises from metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine by Shikimate pathway in plants. It exhibits a wide range of therapeutic effects against various diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative. A wide spectrum of beneficial activity for human health has been advocated for this phenolic compound, at least in part, because of its strong antioxidant activity. FA, a phenolic compound is a strong membrane antioxidant and known to positively affect human health. FA is an effective scavenger of free radicals and it has been approved in certain countries as food additive to prevent lipid peroxidation. It effectively scavenges superoxide anion radical and inhibits the lipid peroxidation. It possesses antioxidant property by virtue of its phenolic hydroxyl group in its structure. The hydroxy and phenoxy groups of FA donate electrons to quench the free radicals. The phenolic radical in turn forms a quinone methide intermediate, which is excreted via the bile. The past few decades have been devoted to intense research on antioxidant property of FA. So, the present review deals with the mechanism of antioxidant property of FA and its possible role in therapeutic usage against various diseases.

New developments in ecotoxicology are changing the way pesticides and other toxicants are evaluated. An emphasis on life histories and population fitness through the use of demography, other measures of population growth rate, field studies, and modeling are being exploited to derive better estimates of pesticide impacts on both target and nontarget species than traditional lethal dose estimates. We review the state of the art in demographic toxicology, an approach to the evaluation of toxicity that uses life history parameters and other measures of population growth rate. A review of the literature revealed that 75 studies on the use of demography and similar measures of population growth rate in toxicology have been published since 1962. Of these 75 studies, the majority involved arthropods. Recent evaluations have indicated that ecotoxicological analysis based on population growth rate results in more accurate assessments of the impacts of pesticides and other toxicants because measures of population growth rate combine lethal and sublethal effects, which lethal dose/concentration estimates (LD/LC50) cannot do. We contend that to advance our knowledge of toxicant impacts on arthropods, the population growth rate approach should be widely adopted.

We investigated the effect of phosphatidylethanol (PEt) on fluidity and membrane tolerance to the fluidization induced by ethanol as well as on the activity of two membrane-bound enzymes, Na+/K+ ATPase and 5'-nucleotidase. PEt was synthesized from 1,2-dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylcholine from bovine brain and studies were performed to determine the optimal experimental conditions for the insertion of PEt in natural bilayers. The effects of PEt, evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry or fluorescence polarization techniques, were studied in model membranes made of synthetic phospholipids or made of total lipids extracted from rat brain crude mitochondrial fraction (P2 fraction) and from natural membranes (P2 fraction). The presence of PEt increased the fluidity of artificial as well of natural membranes, but tolerance to the addition of ethanol, displayed by dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles and by natural membranes containing PEt, was lacking in vesicles made of dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine and in artificial bilayers reconstituted from total P2 lipid extracts, suggesting an involvement of PC on PEt-induced ethanol resistance. Na+/K+ ATPase activity was enhanced by the addition of small amounts of ethanol (up to 50 mM) and progressively inhibited at higher concentrations, while 5'-nucleotidase was not affected up to 400 mM ethanol. The presence of PEt in the bilayer exerted the opposite effects on the two enzymes, reducing the Na+/K+ ATPase activation induced by ethanol and enhancing 5'-nucleotidase activity. The mechanisms of the PEt-induced modifications are discussed.

The present work shows that semistarvation (8–10 g of food for 10 days) increases netd-glucose, Na+ and water transport in the everted and perfused rat jejunum. A lincar and positive correlation between cell sugar concentration and transport was found in control and semistarved rats, but the phenomenon was more relevant only in semistarved animals. Membrane vesicle experiments showed that semistarvation increases sugar overshoot only in brush border membrane vesicles, while this situation does not occur in basolateral membrane vesicles. The effect of partial food deprivation seems to enhance net sugar transport by mereasing sugar entry across the apical membrane of enterocytes.
