Efficacy of Bacillus subtilis and bacitracin methylene disalicylate on growth performance, digestibility, blood metabolites, immunity, and intestinal microbiota after intramuscular inoculation with Escherichia coli in broilers

Fosfomycin (FOS) is a natural bactericidal broad-spectrum antibiotic which acts on proliferating bacteria by inhibiting cell wall and early murein/peptidoglycan synthesis. Bactericidal activity is evident against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and can also act synergistically with other antibiotics. Bacterial resistance to FOS may be natural or acquired. Other properties of this drug include inhibition of bacterial adhesion to epithelial cells, exopolysaccharide biofilm penetration, immunomodulatory effect, phagocytosis promotion and protection against the nephrotoxicity caused by other drugs. FOS has chemical characteristics not typically observed in organic phosphoric compounds and its molecular weight is almost the lowest of all the antimicrobials. It tends to form salts easily due to its acidic nature (disodium salt, for intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SC) administration; calcium and trometamol salt: for oral (PO) administration). FOS has a very low protein binding (<0.5%) which, along with its low molecular weight and water solubility, contributes to its good diffusion into fluids (cerebrospinal fluid, aqueous and vitreous humor, interstitial fluid) and tissues (placenta, bone, muscle, liver, kidney and skin/fat). In all species, important differences in the bioavailability have been found after administration in relation to the various derivatives of FOS salts. Pharmacokinetic profiles have been described in humans, chickens, rabbits, cows, dogs, horses and weaning piglets. The low toxicity and potential efficacy of FOS are the main factors that contribute to its use in humans and animals. Thus, it has been used to treat a broad variety of bacterial infections in humans, such as localized peritonitis, brain abscesses, severe soft tissue infections, cystitis and other conditions. In veterinary medicine, FOS is used to treat infectious diseases of broiler chickens and pigs. In broilers, it is administered for the treatment of E. coli and Salmonella spp. infections. In piglets, the drug is prescribed to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. FOS penetration is demonstrated in phagocytic, respiratory (HEP-2) and intestinal (IPEC-J2) cells. Although not widely used in animals, the drug has shown good results in human medicine. The potentialities of FOS suggest that this drug is a promising candidate for the treatment of infections in veterinary medicine. For these reasons, the aim of this work is to provide animal health practitioners with information on a drug that is not extensively recognized.

A meta-analysis of the feed intake and growth performance of broiler chickens challenged by bacteria

Summary This study was designed to compare the efficacy of a phytobiotic containing a mixture of essential oils of Oreganum aetheroleum and an antibiotic containing ciprofloxacin as an active principle for the treatment of experimental Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) infection in broiler chickens. Two - hundred - day - old broiler chickens were divided into 5 equal groups. The 1st group was neither challenged nor treated, but groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were challenged with E. coli . The 2nd group was challenged with E. coli only, while the 3rd, 4th and 5th group were treated with phytobiotic, ciprofloxacin and phytobiotic and ciprofloxacin combinations, respectively. Results confirmed significant (P<0.05) improvement of productive performance parameters, reduction in signs, mortalities, post mortem lesions and bacterial re-isolation, enhancement in cell mediated and humoral immune responses, reduction in levels of liver and kidney function tests and increase in the total protein and globulin levels in challenged chickens treated with either essential oils or ciprofloxacin compared to challenged non treated chickens. Tackling experimental colisepticaemia in broiler chickens using phytobiotic essential oils and antibiotic alone or in combination

One hundred broiler chickens were divided into four groups. Group A was untreated and challenged with E. coli 02:KH6; group B was infected and treated with bacteriocin in their drinking water; group C was infected and treated by administration of Lactobacillus plantarum F1 culture in skimmed milk, and group D acted as a control. Their weight, feed intake, clinical signs, microscopic lesions, E. coli re-isolation and serum biochemistry were compared. Groups B and C showed fewer symptoms and gross lesions than those from group A, while body weight and feed intakes were similar to the control group. E. coli 02:KH6 was re-isolated in 60% of the livers from group A, compared to 8 and 12% of the livers from group B and C respectively. There was significant increase in the levels of total protein (3.78 ± 0.05 g/100 ml) and globulins (2.53 ± 0.03 g/100 ml) in group A compared to groups B and C. The cholesterol levels in group A (112.56 ± 0.15 mg/100 ml) were significantly reduced compared to those of groups B and C which had 127.25 ± 0.14 and 128.73 ± 0.13 mg/100 ml respectively. The study provides evidence of the potential therapeutic efficacy of bacteriocin in the control of an experimental E. coli infection in broiler chickens.

Influence of bacteriocin in the control of Escherichia coli infection of broiler chickens in Nigeria

One hundred and twenty 1-day-old broiler chickens were divided into four groups: group I unmedicated and orally challenged with 1.5 x 10(8) cfu of Salmonella enteritidis phage type 4; group F infected and treated with 300 ppm of fosfomycin in their drinking water; group CF uninfected and treated, and group C maintained as a control group. Their performance, clinical signs, S. enteritidis PT4 reisolation and biochemistry variables were compared. Group F showed fewer symptoms and gross lesions than those from group 1. Fosfomycin treatment at 300 ppm improved body weight at 7 days of age by 42.3%. S. enteritidis PT4 reisolation in group I was higher than in the treated group, but total decontamination of challenged birds was not achieved. There was an increase in the levels of total protein and globulins in group I but not in the treated group. Fosfomycin caused no adverse effects on chickens from group CF, assessed by performance and biochemical variables. The results indicate that fosfomycin could be used in the treatment of S. enteritidis PT4 experimental infection.

Efficacy of phosphomycin in the control of escherichia coli infection of broiler chickens

Two trials were made to assess the efficacy of including calcium fosfomycin in the drinking water or in the feed for four days to control the adverse effects of experimentally induced colibacillosis in broiler chickens. Trial 1 had five groups of 15 chicks each: one group of negative controls; an untreated infected control group and three groups treated with 50, 100 or 200 ppm of calcium fosfomycin in drinking water. Trial 2 had the same groups but the antibiotic was incorporated into the feed. The chickens were infected via their air sacs with 1.7 x 10(8) - 3.6 x 10(8) CFU/chick of Escherichia coli O78:K80. The morbidity and mortality, a score for the gross lesions, the relative weight of the liver and spleen, performance and re-isolation of the challenge bacteria were recorded. Calcium fosfomycin in the drinking water controlled the colibacillosis, particularly in the group treated with 200 ppm. However, no effect of the antibiotic was seen when calcium fosfomycin was incorporated into the feed, the mortality, score of lesions and re-isolation of E. coli from the organs in the three treated groups being similar to those for the infected unmedicated group. The amount of antibiotic ingested in trial I was three times more than in trial 2. These results suggest that calcium fosfomycin is best used in the drinking water for the treatment of colibacillosis.
