The ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) Inner Detector provides charged particle tracking in the centre of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Inner Detector consists of three subdetectors: the Pixel Detector, the Semiconductor Tracker (SCT), and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). This paper summarizes the tests that were carried out at the final stage of SCT+TRT integration prior to their installation in ATLAS. The combined operation and performance of the SCT and TRT barrel and endcap detectors was investigated through a series of noise tests, and by recording the tracks of cosmic rays. This was a crucial test of hardware and software of the combined tracker detector systems. The results of noise and cross-talk tests on the SCT and TRT in their final assembled configuration, using final readout and supply hardware and software, are reported. The reconstruction and analysis of the recorded cosmic tracks allowed testing of the offline analysis chain and verification of basic tracker performance parameters, such as efficiency and spatial resolution, in combined operation before installation.

Combined performance tests before installation of the ATLAS

A search for pair-production of heavy leptons (Σ0, Σ±) predicted by the Type III seesaw mechanism to explain the origin of small neutrino masses is presented. The decay channels for the heavy leptons Σ0 →W±e∓ and Σ± →Wνe are considered. Multivariate techniques versus a kinematic selection method are compared. The study is based on proton-proton collisions recorded at the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN during 2015 with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1 and no evidence of heavy lepton pair-production was observed.

Search for Type III Seesaw Heavy Leptons in Proton-Proton Collisions with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

In order to cope with increasing lifetime radiation damage expected at collider experiments, silicon sensors are becoming increasingly thin. To achieve adequate detection efficiency, the next generation of detectors may have to operate with thresholds below 1000 electron-hole pairs. The readout chips attached to these sensors should be calibrated to some known external charge, but there is a lack of traditional sources in this charge regime. We present a new method for absolute charge calibration based on Compton scattering. In the past, this method has been used for calibration of scintillators, but to our knowledge never for silicon detectors. Here it has been studied using a 150 micron thick planar silicon sensor on an RD53A readout integrated circuit.

The ATLAS Pixel Detector is the innermost detector of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, providing high-resolution measurements of charged particle tracks in the high radiation environment close to the collision region. This capability is vital for the identification and measurement of proper decay times of long-lived particles such as B-hadrons, and thus vital for the ATLAS physics program. The detector provides hermetic coverage with three cylindrical layers and three layers of forward and backward pixel detectors. It consists of approximately 80 million pixels that are individually read out via chips bump-bonded to 1744 n-in-n silicon substrates. In this paper, results from the successful operation of the Pixel Detector at the LHC will be presented, including monitoring, calibration procedures and detector performance. The detector performance is excellent: 96.2% of the pixels are operational, noise occupancy is sufficiently low and hit efficiency exceed the design specification.
