We investigate the photo-induced carrier dynamics and spin-lattice interaction in hexagonal YMnO3 film by the temperature-dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The spin-lattice interaction is identified from the slow component of the transient transmittance change with the excitation energies tuned to 1.7 eV and 2.0 eV, which are close to Mn3+ ions d(xz),(yz)→d(z2) and d(x2-y2),(xy)→d(z2) transition, respectively. Temperature dependences of the spin-lattice relaxation parameters demonstrate that the spin-lattice interaction is strongly connected with the d-d transition within Mn3+ ions and enhanced by spin ordering.

Ultrafast dynamics of the Mn3+ d-d transition and spin-lattice interaction in YMnO3 film

In this work, we use ultrafast optical pump-optical probe spectroscopy to probe the polaron dynamics in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) thin films. The temporal evolution in transient reflectivity change ΔR/R exhibits two relaxing components: a fast component with a time constant of subpicosecond and a slow component with time constant ranging from tens of picoseconds to hundreds of picoseconds. The amplitude of the fast component, though has been seldom discussed before, exhibits the similar temperature dependence with that of the resistivity and the neutron scattering intensity due to nanoscale correlated polarons. The results strongly suggest that the fast photoinduced reflectivity change may have been due to the photoexcitation and trapping process of correlated Jahn–Teller polarons in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and, thus, implies the presence of electronic inhomogeneity in LCMO manganites.

Ultrafast optical probes of polaron dynamics in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films

Photoinduced magnetization following a stretched exponential growth with time is observed in ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.9}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ films exposed to near infrared light in magnetic fields of $\mathit{B}\ensuremath{\geqslant}0.1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mT}$. The magnetic irreversibility observed below 56 K between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled films is strongly influenced by illumination, giving space to a persistent magnetic state with increased ferromagnetic interactions, modified magnetic anisotropy and decrease of the blocking temperature to 5 K. When the illumination and the magnetic field are removed the magnetization of the films decays very slowly after a short period of fast relaxation but recovers the original level when the field is applied again. Such behavior obeys predictions for domain pinning in narrow-wall random-field Ising systems. The results suggest trapping of photogenerated electrons by magnetic disorder while the holes contribute to growth of ferromagnetism in the films.

Persistent photoinduced magnetization and hole droplets in La 0.9 Ca 0.1 MnO 3 films

We report on time-resolved pump–probe measurements of spin-dependent dynamics in strained Nd0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin films grown on three different substrates: LaAlO3 (001), SrTiO3 (001), and NdGaO3 (110). The temperature dependence of the long-lived spin-relaxation component is represented well by a power-law decay of long-range correlations, clearly showing the transition from quasilong-range ferromagnetic order to a disordered paramagnetic phase. The “disordering” temperature, TM, where the intermediate phase of quasilong-range order appears, varies according to the creation of static-distortion waves under different strain forces.

Strain-dependent spin dynamics in Nd0.67Sr0.33MnO3 near the metal-insulator transition

We report β -NMR measurements of the nuclear spin relaxation rate ( 1 / T 1 ) in a thin film of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) using a low-energy beam of spin-polarized 8Li. In a small magnetic field of 150 G, there is a broad peak in 1 / T 1 near the Curie temperature ( T c = 259 K ) and a dramatic decrease in 1 / T 1 at lower temperatures. This is attributed to a critical slowing down of the spin fluctuations near T c and freezing of the magnetic excitations at low temperatures, respectively. In addition, there is a small amplitude, slow relaxing component at high temperatures, which we attribute to 8Li in the SrTiO3 substrate. There is an indication that the spin relaxation rate in the substrate is also peaked at T c due to close proximity to the magnetic film. These results establish that low-energy β -NMR can be used as a probe of magnetic fluctuations in magnetic thin films over a wide range of temperatures.

Summary form only given. The emergent properties of many materials derive from strong electron correlations augmented or mediated under realistic conditions by electron-phonon interactions. An important class of materials whose electronic and transport properties are primarily determined by such many-body effects are mixed-valence manganite perovskites R/sub 1-x/D/sub x/MnO/sub 3/ where R is a trivalent rare earth (e.g., La, Nd) and D is a divalent alkali (e.g., Ca, Sr). For hole doping in the range x/spl sim/0.2-0.5 La/sub 1-x/Ca/sub x/MnO/sub 3/ is, at low temperature, a metallic ferromagnet becoming a paramagnetic insulator at temperature T/sub c/ with a maximum T/sub c/ of /spl sim/270 K for x/spl sim/0.3. Qualitatively, both double exchange (i.e., Mn/sup 3+/-O-Mn/sup 4+//spl rarr/Mn/sup 4+/-O-Mn/sup 3+/) and electron-phonon coupling determine the magnetic and transport properties. The observation of colossal negative magnetoresistance in hole-doped manganites demonstrates the sensitivity of electronic conduction to the underlying magnetic structure. As such, time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy directly probes the interplay between the electronic, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom. We have measured absolute conductivity changes from 0.4-1.0 THz in La/sub 0.7/Ca/sub 0.3/MnO/sub 3/ thin films from 10-230 K with picosecond resolution. Two components observed in the conductivity relaxation are described.
