Nanowires and monoatomic chains having diameter in the range of Fermi wavelength have shown novel atomic, electronic, and thermal transport properties. Quantization due to the transversal confinement and resulting finite level spacings of electronic and phononic energy states underlie these observed unusual properties. This paper discusses various stretching mechanisms and our predictions on the formation of single monoatomic chain and bundle of chains at the neck of nanowire, and presents a comprehensive analysis of the stepwise variation of force, electrical and thermal conductance.
