Smearing damage was created on cylindrical roller bearings (CRBs) using a laboratory test protocol that required alternating the load zone direction according to a square wave function. The experimental goal was to compare the wear protection afforded by various surface treatments, including vibratory superfinishing (ES20), black oxide treatment, and special tungsten carbide–reinforced amorphous hydrocarbon roller body coatings (WC/a-C:H). The only bearing treatments that did not smear in these severe tests were the WC/a-C:H bearings. Black oxide and ES20 bearings experienced smearing with the same frequency as untreated bearings, albeit to different degrees of microscopic damage. The test rig was instrumented to measure cage slip, which provided insight about the roller–raceway slip dynamics during the tests via kinematic calculations. Broad review of “White Etching Crack” failure in wind turbine gearbox bearings: Main factors and experimental investigations

The onset of smearing damage was studied under controlled conditions in a custom test rig that simulates the passage of a rolling element through loaded and unloaded zones of a rolling bearing. The setup includes a spherical roller that is intermittently loaded between two bearing raceways driven at a prescribed speed. The roller is free to accelerate during the loading phase. Contact load, roller speed and acceleration, and electrical contact resistance are recorded during the test. Contact shear stress, friction coefficient, frictional power intensity, and elastohydrodynamic film thickness are calculated from the recorded kinematics data. Results suggest that the first onset of smearing occurs early in the loading phase where the roller is near stationary and the frictional power intensity is high. An Experimental Investigation into the Onset of Smearing Damage in Nonconformal Contacts with Application to Roller Bearings

Friction and wear properties of black oxide surfaces in rolling/sliding contacts

Surface coatings increase the wear and smearing resistance of a machine element. Nevertheless, most of the coating processes are expensive and time-consuming. By contrast, Schaeffler's Durotect® B coating seems attractive regarding production expenditure and price. However, the literature about the behaviour of this coating is very limited. This paper describes the experimental setup and the experiments that were carried out in order to evaluate the wear and smearing resistance of the Durotect® B coated 100Cr6 steel in reference to plain 100Cr6 through hardened steel. Durotect® B is a mixed black iron oxide coating developed by Schaeffler especially for use in machine elements. The main measured parameters (mass loss, smearing slide-to-roll ratio, friction and normal force, surface roughness and bulk temperature) are presented. Comparative charts of the monitored parameters are given and discussed. It is concluded that this coating decreases friction coefficient and improves both the smearing and wear resistance.
