As a category of crucial wear-resistant alloys, high-chromium cast irons (HCCIs) are widely used in mining, minerals and cementation industries. The large volume fraction of coarse primary M7C3 carbides (PC) imparts excellent wear resistance. However, coarse carbides also induce brittleness, resulting in high cracking susceptibility, and early failure of components, particularly under impact. To minimize the brittleness and increase the service life of HCCI parts, different techniques have been developed through modifying the carbide morphology and refining its size. This paper comprehensively reviews the currently available methods that have either been used in industry production or in laboratory development to modify the primary M7C3 carbides in various HCCIs. The possible mechanisms that govern the refinement of primary carbides are also discussed in-depth. Based on previously published work, the mechanical performance of HCCIs is correlated with the microstructure of the matrix, and with the size, shape, volume fraction and distribution of primary carbides. This may provide solid fundamental to develop more effective techniques and/or new alloys to further improve the properties of this type of materials, increasing their engineering service life and to tailor their wider applications. In addition, the present work also seeks theoretical feasibility to apply the recently well-established theories/models of grain refinement for cast metals to refinement of the primary carbides in HCCIs.

Refinement of primary carbides in hypereutectic high-chromium cast irons: a review

Low alloyed zirconium sheets (Zr702) have been cold-rolled up to 80% thickness reduction and submitted to various isothermal treatments. The aim was to identify the mechanisms which produce microstructure and texture changes during recrystallization and grain growth. XRD and texture analysis, FEG–SEM with EBSD as well as TEM were used to analyze the various specimens. Three types of substructures were observed in the initial deformed material. Accordingly, the nucleation starts in the most deformed areas and continues in the somewhat less deformed areas, which corresponds to a non oriented nucleation and results in a set of new grains, the size of which is very rapidly stabilized. In the last stage of recrystallization, the grains which have resisted the recrystallization disappear progressively by several mechanisms including in situ recrystallization. Microstructure characteristics and strengthening mechanism of semisolid CuSn10P1 alloys

In this paper, a semisolid slurry of hypereutectic high chromium cast iron (HCCI) was prepared in a metal mould by a cooling slope body method under pressure The results indicated that the size of the primary carbide in the semisolid hypereutectic HCCI specimens becomes much finer, and there is no shrinkage porosity in the semisolid microstructure under a pressure of 150 MPa The impact toughness of a semisolid specimen without shrinkage porosity is increased by about 121 and 17% compared with those of conventional and semisolid specimens with shrinkage porosity respectively Furthermore, using SiC particles of 80–100 mesh in size as abrasives, the wear resistance of semisolid specimens without shrinkage porosity is increased by about 78 and 20% compared with those of conventional and semisolid specimens with shrinkage porosity respectively

Microstructure and properties of hypereutectic high chromium white cast iron prepared under pressure

The effect of molybdenum addition on the fracture toughness and micro-hardness of Fe2B in Fe-B-C alloy was investigated. The results indicate that, with the increase in molybdenum addition, the micro-hardness of Fe2B increases and its fracture toughness first increases and then decreases. Compared with the fracture toughness (3.8 MPa · m1/2) of Fe2B without molybdenum addition, its toughness at 2.14 wt.% molybdenum addition can be nearly doubled, achieving 7.4 MPa · m1/2. The wear result indicates that increasing the toughness of Fe2B may distinctly improve the wear resistance of Fe-B-C alloy and the wear resistance is improved by around 35% in this experimental condition.

Effect of molybdenum addition on fracture toughness and hardness of Fe2B in Fe–B–C cast alloy

To improve the toughness of hypereutectic high chromium cast iron, the morphology of the primary carbides were improved by the slope cooling body method, a semisolid forming process. The semisolid specimens were prepared under different forming techniques, and the microstructure, impact toughness and wear resistance were studied. The results indicate that the morphology of primary carbide is improved, impact toughness initially increases then remains constant as the semisolid forming temperature increases, impact toughness was improved, but wear resistance was reduced.
