Advances in atomic physics, such as cooling and trapping of atoms and molecules and developments in frequency metrology, have added orders of magnitude to the precision of atom-based clocks and sensors. Applications extend beyond atomic physics and this article reviews using these new techniques to address important challenges in physics and to look for variations in the fundamental constants, search for interactions beyond the standard model of particle physics, and test the principles of general relativity.

Search for New Physics with Atoms and Molecules

The passage of time is tracked by counting oscillations of a frequency reference, such as Earth’s revolutions or swings of a pendulum. By referencing atomic transitions, frequency (and thus time) can be measured more precisely than any other physical quantity, with the current generation of optical atomic clocks reporting fractional performance below the 10−17 level1–5. However, the theory of relativity prescribes that the passage of time is not absolute, but is affected by an observer’s reference frame. Consequently, clock measurements exhibit sensitivity to relative velocity, acceleration and gravity potential. Here we demonstrate local optical clock measurements that surpass the current ability to account for the gravitational distortion of space-time across the surface of Earth. In two independent ytterbium optical lattice clocks, we demonstrate unprecedented values of three fundamental benchmarks of clock performance. In units of the clock frequency, we report systematic uncertainty of 1.4 × 10−18, measurement instability of 3.2 × 10−19 and reproducibility characterized by ten blinded frequency comparisons, yielding a frequency difference of [−7 ± (5)stat ± (8)sys] × 10−19, where ‘stat’ and ‘sys’ indicate statistical and systematic uncertainty, respectively. Although sensitivity to differences in gravity potential could degrade the performance of the clocks as terrestrial standards of time, this same sensitivity can be used as a very sensitive probe of geopotential5–9. Near the surface of Earth, clock comparisons at the 1 × 10−18 level provide a resolution of one centimetre along the direction of gravity, so the performance of these clocks should enable geodesy beyond the state-of-the-art level. These optical clocks could further be used to explore geophysical phenomena10, detect gravitational waves11, test general relativity12 and search for dark matter13–17. Improved techniques allow the measurement of a frequency difference with an uncertainty of the order of 10–19 between two independent atomic optical lattice clocks, suggesting that they may be able to improve state-of-the-art geodetic techniques.

Atomic clock performance enabling geodesy below the centimetre level

Optical frequency combs were developed nearly two decades ago to support the world’s most precise atomic clocks. Acting as precision optical synthesizers, frequency combs enable the precise transfer of phase and frequency information from a high-stability reference to hundreds of thousands of tones in the optical domain. This versatility, coupled with near-continuous spectroscopic coverage from microwave frequencies to the extreme ultra-violet, has enabled precision measurement capabilities in both fundamental and applied contexts. This review takes a tutorial approach to illustrate how 20 years of source development and technology has facilitated the journey of optical frequency combs from the lab into the field. Optical frequency combs were realized nearly two decades ago to support the development of the world’s most precise atomic clocks, but their versatility has since made them useful instruments well beyond their original goal, and spans across a wide variety of fundamental and applied physics in a wide range of wavelengths. Fortier and Baumann present a comprehensive review of developments in optical frequency comb technology and a view to the future with these technologies.

Optical atomic clocks require local oscillators with exceptional optical coherence owing to the challenge of performing spectroscopy on their ultranarrow-linewidth clock transitions. Advances in laser stabilization have thus enabled rapid progress in clock precision. A new class of ultrastable lasers based on cryogenic silicon reference cavities has recently demonstrated the longest optical coherence times to date. Here we utilize such a local oscillator with two strontium (Sr) optical lattice clocks to achieve an advance in clock stability. Through an anti-synchronous comparison, the fractional instability of both clocks is assessed to be $$4.8 \times 10^{ - 17}/\sqrt \tau$$
 for an averaging time τ (in seconds). Synchronous interrogation enables each clock to average at a rate of $$3.5 \times 10^{ - 17}/\sqrt \tau$$
 , dominated by quantum projection noise, and reach an instability of 6.6 × 10−19 over an hour-long measurement. The ability to resolve sub-10−18-level frequency shifts in such short timescales will affect a wide range of applications for clocks in quantum sensing and fundamental physics. By using an ultrastable oscillator based on a cryogenic Si cavity, the fractional instability of two Sr optical lattice clocks at 1 s reaches 4.8 × 10−17 and 3.5 × 10−17 through anti-synchronous and synchronous comparisons, respectively.

Demonstration of 4.8 × 10−17 stability at 1 s for two independent optical clocks

Detecting ocean-floor seismic activity is crucial for our understanding of the interior structure and dynamic behavior of Earth. However, 70% of the planet’s surface is covered by water, and seismometer coverage is limited to a handful of permanent ocean bottom stations. We show that existing telecommunication optical fiber cables can detect seismic events when combined with state-of-the-art frequency metrology techniques by using the fiber itself as the sensing element. We detected earthquakes over terrestrial and submarine links with lengths ranging from 75 to 535 kilometers and a geographical distance from the earthquake’s epicenter ranging from 25 to 18,500 kilometers. Implementing a global seismic network for real-time detection of underwater earthquakes requires applying the proposed technique to the existing extensive submarine optical fiber network.

Ultrastable laser interferometry for earthquake detection with terrestrial and submarine cables

Phase compensated optical fiber links enable high accuracy atomic clocks separated by thousands of kilometers to be compared with unprecedented statistical resolution. By searching for a daily variation of the frequency difference between four strontium optical lattice clocks in different locations throughout Europe connected by such links, we improve upon previous tests of time dilation predicted by special relativity. We obtain a constraint on the Robertson–Mansouri–Sexl parameter |α| 1.1 × 10 −8 quantifying a violation of time dilation, thus improving by a factor of around two the best known constraint obtained with Ives–Stilwell type experiments, and by two orders of magnitude the best constraint obtained by comparing atomic clocks. This work is the first of a new generation of tests of fundamental physics using optical clocks and fiber links. As clocks improve, and as fiber links are routinely operated, we expect that the tests initiated in this paper will improve by orders of magnitude in the near future.

Test of Special Relativity Using a Fiber Network of Optical Clocks.

The Atomic Clocks Ensemble in Space (ACES/PHARAO mission, ESA & CNES) will be installed on board the International Space Station (ISS) next year. A crucial part of this experiment is its two-way microwave link (MWL), which will compare the timescale generated on board with those provided by several ground stations disseminated on the Earth. A dedicated data analysis center is being implemented at SYRTE—Observatoire de Paris, where our team currently develops theoretical modelling, numerical simulations and the data analysis software itself.In this paper, we present some key aspects of the MWL measurement method and the associated algorithms for simulations and data analysis. We show the results of tests using simulated data with fully realistic effects such as fundamental measurement noise, Doppler, atmospheric delays, or cycle ambiguities. We demonstrate satisfactory performance of the software with respect to the specifications of the ACES mission. The main scientific product of our analysis is the clock desynchronisation between ground and space clocks, i.e. the difference of proper times between the space clocks and ground clocks at participating institutes. While in flight, this measurement will allow for tests of general relativity and Lorentz invariance at unprecedented levels, e.g. measurement of the gravitational redshift at the level.As a specific example, we use real ISS orbit data with estimated errors at the 10 m level to study the effect of such errors on the clock desynchronisation obtained from MWL data. We demonstrate that the resulting effects are totally negligible.
