According to the Hungarian Soil Information and Monitoring System's (HSIMS) database a group estimation method was developed to predict the mean soil hydrophysical properties. The estimation efficiency of the worked out prediction procedures was controlled on a test database, and on a dataset of a study area. It can be established that the water retention and the hydraulic conductivity of soils are sufficiently predictable from the category data of soil maps. The 10-digit map codes of the PWW mapping method were created by different estimation methods, and as a result the PWW map was drawn. However, it is not always possible to estimate the necessary soil hydrophysical properties from the available map information for preparing the PWW map. Sometimes the knowledge gained from the field reports is needed as well. Further studies are planned for integrating these morphological information into our estimations.

Use of Soil Water Retention Capacity and Hydraulic Conductivity Estimation in the Preparation of Soil Water Management Maps

Introduction The water storage in soil is the source of water for field crops. Successful production process during the growing season depends not only on the soil water content, but also on the characteristics of soil and field crops. The most common methods for the determination of soil water storage are based on the measuring of the soil moisture, or measuring of meteorological components. In these methods, the demand of crop for water is not taken into consideration. The demand of crop for water depends mainly on the growing phase of the crop. The most suitable methods are those based on physiological indicators for water demand during the critical growing periods of crops. This article deals with the utilization of the hydrolimits of soil for the soil water storage state. Availability of water from the unsaturated zone (UZ) for crop canopy was considered according to the intervals delimited by the hydrolimits of soil: field capacity (Ws), point of decreased availability for water (Wdaw) and wilting point (Wwp).

Impact of canopy on the water storage dynamics in soil

This paper introduces the results of monitoring and simulation of the water regime in heavy soils. The presented model shows a good rate of accordance between the calculated and measured results. During the research the two-domain soil structure was being observed. The soil profile has extent retention properties and the depth of drainage reaches the maximum of 0,70 metres. With regards to retention, the crack network of a two-domain soil structure has also a significant influence on the water regime in the case of immediate high total rainfall.

Prognosis of soil drought.

In this study pedotransfer functions (PTFs) were developed to estimate the soil water retention curves (SWRCs) for Rye Island (Csallokoz, S. W. Slovakia). A representative set of soil water retention curves was measured using a laboratory method on samples taken from soils the study area. Particle size distribution and bulk density were determined as well. Multiple regression analysis was used for estimating nine statistical relationships in order to predict the drying part of the SWRCs. Texture and bulk density were used as predictors. Pedotransfer functions were verified on another set of measured water retention curves from the same territory as well as on SWRCs determined for soils of the Szigetkoz region in Hungary. A good agreement was found between the calculated and measured SWRCs for the Slovakian soils, while somewhat poorer estimates could be given for Hungarian soils.
