The mechanical properties of ex-situ and in-situ metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) have proven to be both scientifically unique and of potentially important for practical applications. However, the underlying deformation mechanisms remain to be studied. In this article, we review the development, fabrication, microstructures, and properties of MGMCs, including the room-temperature, cryogenic-temperature, and high-temperature mechanical properties upon quasi-static and dynamic loadings. In parallel, the deformation mechanisms are experimentally and theoretically explored. Moreover, the fatigue, corrosion, and wear behaviors of MGMCs are discussed. Finally, the potential applications and important unresolved issues are identified and discussed.

The phase-formation rule of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with different microstructures is discussed, based on the atom-size difference in multicomponent alloys. For the single-phase HEA with the composition of AlCoCrFeNi, the yielding strengths and fracture strengths at cryogenic temperatures increase distinguishingly, compared to the corresponding mechanical properties at ambient temperature. However, the plasticity at 298 and 77 K changes very gently, while the fracture modes are intergranular and transgranular, respectively.

Towards nano-injection molding

The objective of this paper was to study the fatigue characteristics of zirconium (Zr)-based bulk-metallic glasses (BMGs) and to investigate the mechanisms of fatigue-crack initiation, crack propagation, and fracture in BMGs. The fatigue ratios (fatigue limit/tensile strength) (0.30–0.55) of Zr-based BMGs were found to be generally comparable with those of crystalline alloys, such as steel and titanium alloys. Fatigue cracks typically initiate from shear bands, inclusions, and/or porosities. The striations resulting from the blunting and resharpening of the fatigue-crack tip formed in the fatigue-crack-growth region. The fine striation spacing seems to be comparable to that of the crystalline alloys.

Fatigue behavior of Zr-based bulk-metallic glasses

The development of a machine with the capability to manufacture bulk-amorphous metal-alloy castings with a wide range of geometries and dimensions is described. The design utilizes a method of melting and alloying elemental metals and subsequently quench casting while controlling relative pressures to facilitate both drop and suction castings within an ultrahigh purity environment(∼1appm oxygen). The focus of this design was to improve the capabilities and simplicity of existing laboratory-scale metallic-glass casting machines, as well as to combine two major casting processes currently being utilized for the fabrication of bulk-metallic glasses (BMGs). Processing experiments on the glass-forming alloy Vitrelloy-105 (Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5) are discussed.
