The aim of the present article is to give a review of the state-ofthe-art on quasicrystal structure analysis. After a short discussion of the term \"crystal\" in chapter 1, the geometrical generation of quasilattices is touched in chapter 2. In the following the higher-dimensional description of Id, 2d and 3d quasi-crystals is demonstrated in detail as well as the derivation of structure factor equations and symmetry relationships in the higher-dimensional space. Chapter 4 shows the experimental techniques and structure determination methods for the study of quasicrystals. The experimental results of structural studies performed with different techniques are critically reviewed in chapter 5. Some of the results of the literature research are that five years after the detection of the first quasicrystal not a single quantitative (in terms of a regular structure determination) analysis of its structure has been carried out, and that the famous Mackay-icosahedra do not play the important role as the basic structural building elements as one supposed before. 1. The structure of quasicrystals

A decagonal quasicrystal with a periodicity of 1·6 nm along the tenfold axis, similar to that in Al─Pd and Al─Co, has been found in a rapidly solidified Al6Ni alloy containing a few per cent of silicon. In addition, a new decagonal phase has been found in Al4Ni which has a periodicity of 0·4 nm along the tenfold axis. This decagonal phase is different from those reported before in the aluminium–transition metal alloys. A new metastable crystalline phase Al9Ni2 having the structure of Al9Co2 has been found.

The Structure of Quasicrystals

An alloy of compositon Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5 forms a mixture of icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystals upon rapid solidification from the liquid state. These quasicrystals are highly faulted as revealed by electron microscopy studies. After heat treatment, the alloy transforms into a new orthorhombic modification. This crystal is studied by X-ray and transmission electron microscopy and emphasis is put on its close resemblance to the decagonal phase.

Quasicrystals and crystalline phases in Al65Cu20Fe10Cr5 alloy

In this work the AlCo intermetallic compound has been prepared by high‐energy ball milling of Co and Al powder mixtures with the composition of Co‐50 at.% Al, Co‐71.4 at.% Al, Co‐76.5 at.% Al, and Co‐81.8 at.% Al, respectively. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis of powders milled for different times proved that the AlCo phase formed directly during milling of the powder mixture of the former three compositions. In the Co‐81.8 at.% Al powder mixture the amorphous phase was first formed and then crystallized to the AlCo phase. The result of energy dispersion x ray showed that the composition of AlCo phase formed during milling of the above four compositions is in agreement with that of the powder mixture, although their crystal structure is that of the AlCo intermetallic compound. The enhancement of solid solubility limits of AlCo intermetallic compound by high‐energy ball milling

Dunlap and Dini (1986) have found a decagonal phase instead of the icosahedral quasicrystal in a rapidly solidified Al6Co alloy. The decagonal phase is similar but not identical to those found in Al6Mn and Al6Fe alloys. The crystalline phase coexisting with this decagonal phase is Al9Co2. The authors carry out a transmission electron microscopy study of the quasicrystal structure of the alloy.
