Global pollution is calling for advanced methods to remove contaminants from water and wastewater, such as TiO2-assisted photocatalysis. The environmental applications of titanium dioxide have started after the initial TiO2 application for water splitting by Fujishima and Honda in 1972. TiO2 is now used for self-cleaning surfaces, air and water purification systems, microbial inactivation and selective organic conversion. The synthesis of titanium dioxide nanomaterials with high photocatalytic activity is actually a major challenge. Here we review titanium dioxide photocatalysis with focus on mechanims, synthesis, and applications. Synthetic methods include sol-gel, sonochemical, microwave, oxidation, deposition, hydro/solvothermal, and biological techniques. Applications comprise the production of energy, petroleum recovery, and the removal of microplastics, pharmaceuticals, metals, dyes, pesticides, and of viruses such as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Synthesis and application of titanium dioxide photocatalysis for energy, decontamination and viral disinfection: a review

Titanium and its alloys have superb biocompatibility, low elastic modulus, and favorable corrosion resistance. These exceptional properties lead to its wide use as a medical implant material. Titanium itself does not have antibacterial properties, so bacteria can gather and adhere to its surface resulting in infection issues. The infection is among the main reasons for implant failure in orthopedic surgeries. Nano-modification, as one of the good options, has the potential to induce different degrees of antibacterial effect on the surface of implant materials. At the same time, the nano-modification procedure and the produced nanostructures should not adversely affect the osteogenic activity, and it should simultaneously lead to favorable antibacterial properties on the surface of the implant. This article scrutinizes and deals with the surface nano-modification of titanium implant materials from three aspects: nanostructures formation procedures, nanomaterials loading, and nano-morphology. In this regard, the research progress on the antibacterial properties of various surface nano-modification of titanium implant materials and the related procedures are introduced, and the new trends will be discussed in order to improve the related materials and methods.

Nano-Modified Titanium Implant Materials: A Way Toward Improved Antibacterial Properties.

Nowadays, titanium and its alloys are widely used materials in implantology. Nevertheless, the greatest challenge is still its appropriate surface treatment in order to induce optimal properties, which facilitates formation of a permanent bond between the implant and human tissue. The use of electrochemical treatment such as anodic oxidation or plasma electrolytic oxidation allows for the production of porous coating that mimics the bone structure and accelerates the osseointegration process. The literature shows that the morphology, thickness, crystallinity, chemical composition, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of coatings, as well as their bioactivity, strongly depend on the parameters of electrochemical processes (voltage, duration, composition and temperature of the electrolyte). The purpose of this study is to review, summarize, and analyze the latest accomplishments and trends in the development of coatings used in implantology, produced with the use of electrochemical oxidation and micro arc oxidation. Recent progress and future challenges associated with the surface modification of titanium and its alloy for biomedical applications have been discussed.

Influencing parameters in the electrochemical anodization of TiO2 nanotubes: Systematic review and meta-analysis

We have investigated the formation of self-organized titanium oxide nanotube layers by anodic oxidation on titanium alloys in electrolyte solutions with different temperatures (5, 10, 25, 30, 50 and 70 °C). Pore diameter and the wall thickness of nanotube arrays were controlled by varying anodization time and temperature. We have observed significant outcomes in the formation of TiO2 nanotube arrays at 25 °C with an average inner pore diameter of 125 nm, length of ∼250 nm, the wall thickness of 30 nm and an inter-tube space 35 nm. Nanotube arrays were smooth and circular without any defect in morphology. In addition, anodization of Commercially Pure Titanium (CP Ti) and titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4 V, Ti-6Al-7Nb, Ti-13Nb-13Zr, and β-21 s) was carried out at optimized parameter to understand their significance on TiO2 nanotube arrays formation.
