Rapid progress in the development of metamaterials and metaphotonics allowed bulky optical assemblies to be replaced with thin nanostructured films, often called metasurfaces, opening a broad range of novel and superior applications of flat optics to the generation, manipulation and detection of classical light. Recently, these developments started making headway in quantum photonics, where novel opportunities arose for the control of non-classical nature of light, including photon statistics, quantum state superposition, quantum entanglement and single-photon detection. In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the emerging field of quantum-photonics applications of metasurfaces, focusing on innovative and promising approaches to create, manipulate and detect non-classical light. Progress in the field of quantum-photonics applications of metasurfaces is reviewed. Cutting-edge research, including the development of optical chips supporting high-dimensional quantum entanglement and advanced quantum tomography, is summarized.

In this Perspective, we review recent progress in the field of quantum-photonics applications of metasurfaces, focusing on innovative and promising approaches to create, manipulate, and detect nonclassical light.

Metasurfaces for Quantum Photonics

We demonstrate a nonequilibrium phase transition in a dilute thermal atomic gas. The phase transition, between states of low and high Rydberg occupancy, is induced by resonant dipole-dipole interactions between Rydberg atoms. The gas can be considered as dilute as the atoms are separated by distances much greater than the wavelength of the optical transitions used to excite them. In the frequency domain, we observe a mean-field shift of the Rydberg state which results in intrinsic optical bistability above a critical Rydberg number density. In the time domain, we observe critical slowing down where the recovery time to system perturbations diverges with critical exponent α=-0.53±0.10. The atomic emission spectrum of the phase with high Rydberg occupancy provides evidence for a superradiant cascade.

Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in a Dilute Rydberg Ensemble

We show how strong light-mediated resonant dipole-dipole interactions between atoms can be utilized in a control and storage of light. The method is based on a high-fidelity preparation of a collective atomic excitation in a single correlated subradiant eigenmode in a lattice. We demonstrate how a simple phenomenological model captures the qualitative features of the dynamics and sharp transmission resonances that may find applications in sensing.

Storing Light with Subradiant Correlations in Arrays of Atoms

We theoretically demonstrate how to achieve quantum control of an incident single-photon pulse by engineering the collective response of a two-dimensional atomic array. High-fidelity absorption and storage in a long-lived subradiant state, and its subsequent retrieval, are achieved by controlling classically or quantum mechanically the ac Stark shifts of the atomic levels and suppressing the scattering during the absorption. Quantum wavefront control of the transmitted photon with nearly zero reflection is prepared by coupling the collective state of the array to another photon in a cavity and by engineering a Huygens' surface of atoms only by a single coherent standing wave. The proposed schemes allow for the generation of entanglement between the cavity, the lattice, and hence the state of the stored, reflected or transmitted light, and for quantum-state transfer between the cavity and propagating photons. We illustrate the control by manipulating the phase, phase superposition, polarization, and direction of a transmitted or reflected photon, providing quantum-optical switches and functional quantum interfaces between light and atoms that could form links in a larger quantum information platform.
