Pivoting to Remote Learning: An Inquiry-Based Laboratory Closed Gaps in Self-Efficacy and Science Identity Between Students from Underrepresented Groups and Their Counterparts

In education, space exists for a tool that valorizes generic student course evaluation formats by organizing and recapitulating students’ views on the pedagogical practices to which they are exposed. Often, student opinions about a course are gathered using a general comment section that does not solicit feedback concerning specific course components. Herein, we show a novel approach to summarizing and organizing students’ opinions as a function of the language used in their course evaluations, specifically focusing on developing software that outputs actionable, specific feedback about course components in large-enrollment STEM contexts. Our approach augments existing course review formats, which rely heavily on unstructured text data, with a tool built from Python, LaTeX, and Google’s Natural Language API. The result is quantitative, summative sentiment analysis reports that have general and component-specific sections, aiming to address some of the challenges faced by educators when teaching large physical science courses. 

Enhancing the Value of Large-Enrollment Course Evaluation Data Using Sentiment Analysis

Critical and creative thinking skills are two important aspects that must be exerted to prepare globally competent chemistry teacher candidates. Developing global competence is about how to see teaching practice using a new lens. Minimizing the role of lecturer and making students more active through experimental activities can facilitate the development of both critical and creative thinking skills. Therefore, this study aims to picture the critical and creative thinking skills of chemistry teacher candidates and their motivation in biochemistry laboratory. This case study research involved 38 students’ chemistry teacher candidates as research participants. The data was collected through curriculum document analysis, observations, interviews, and tests for measuring critical and creative thinking skills in biochemistry laboratory activities. Curriculum analysis revealed that the majority of the procedures used in biochemistry laboratories are in cookbook lab-style format. A step-by-step laboratory procedure with a dominant expository method was observed during the teaching process, which was designed to develop only critical thinking skills. The results indicate that critical and creative thinking skills in biochemistry laboratory activities are at a low level, with the average scores obtained through the tests are 45.20% and 33.80%, respectively. Students’ motivation to study in the laboratory was found at a moderate level of 68.00%, suggesting a moderate desire to learn and the satisfaction experienced in the learning process and learning outcome.

Portraying Critical and Creative Thinking Skills of Chemistry Teachers Candidate in Biochemistry Laboratory Activity

Abstract Background With the rapid proliferation of online education, it is incumbent upon teachers to find ways to provide online students with science laboratory experiences. Existing research on online labs focuses heavily on computer‐supported inquiry learning environments, such as virtual laboratories and remote laboratories. There are limited studies on kitchen labs or home labs. Objectives This study investigated the effectiveness of home labs using lab kits from two perspectives: students' perceptions and experiences of labs conducted in a home environment, as well as whether home labs help with students' knowledge acquisition. Methods This study employed lab quizzes to assess students' performance and lab reports to evaluate students' ability to interpret the lab results accurately in the authentic home lab contexts. Surveys and semi‐structured interviews were used to collect students' perceptions and experience data regarding these hands‐on experiments at home. Results and Conclusions We found that students' perceptions of home labs are similar to that of face‐to‐face labs, but they generally perceive home labs to be less complex. Students' performances on lab quizzes and lab reports indicate that the majority of them were able to apply the key scientific concepts to accurately interpret lab results in authentic home lab contexts. Students perceived that home labs provide flexibility and help in connecting learning to the real world. However, they also face challenges such as unexpected results and ambiguity during the process. Implications Based on the key findings from this study and our reflections, four practice guidelines were provided for teaching hands‐on experiments online. 

Incorporating hands‐on experiments into an online science course

Transforming a Classic Polymer Demonstration into a Flexible, Inquiry-Based Laboratory Experience for Lower and Upper Division Laboratories

Teaching chemistry without access to a traditional laboratory space is an ongoing challenge that has become especially relevant because of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. While several remote learning options exist for covering general chemistry concepts (including kitchen-based experiments, online modules, and virtual reality), few options provide opportunities for hands-on learning about the chemistry of synthetic polymer materials. Here, we offer remote learning modules that use household adhesives as a platform for teaching polymer chemistry outside of the laboratory. These modules are designed for students who have taken at least one semester of organic chemistry and have varied hands-on time commitments, ranging from 2 to 10 total hours each. Concepts covered include polymer synthesis, intermolecular interactions, thermomechanical properties, structure–function relationships, and molecular design. The experiments described in these modules also give students a chance to practice research-relevant skills such as searching for primary literature sources, fabricating test samples, explaining unexpected experimental results, and revising experimental procedures to improve methodologies. Ultimately, these modules provide educators with an additional tool for teaching experimental chemistry outside of the laboratory.
