The four authors of this paper have worked in close consultation throughout the project, and present a joint result rather than so many separately initialled sections. Catling has most responsibility for the archaeological matter, Jones for the analytical work, Cherry and Jones for the interpretation of the results of the analyses and Killen for the epigraphic comment. 

It must be noted that a single series of numbers, 1–108, is used throughout this paper to distinguish the test samples. The significance of these numbers is made clear in the Catalogue and Concordances.

Terra Sigillata is a fine ware produced during the Roman period. Its great success was because of its remarkable gloss (or slip), which provides a bright deep red color. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction techniques were used to characterize the microstructure and microcomposition of Roman period Terra Sigillata slip from two sites in southern France. Investigations on eight samples are presented. The slip coatings have similar structures and compositions, consisting of sub-micrometric hematite (≤μm) and nanometric corundum (few tens nm) crystals in a glass matrix with inclusions of spinel and quartz crystals of varying size depending on the extent of preparation by eleutriation. The firing temperature, determined in previous studies, was in the range of 1020°–1080°C. The matrix does not contain iron or other metallic ions. Hematite and corundum crystals are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix and, together, confer the specific red-orange color to the sigillata.

Microstructural and Microchemical Characterization of Roman Period Terra Sigillate Slips from Archeological Sites in Southern France

Forty-five sherds of Roman pottery, 21 terrae sigillutae and 24 common wares excavated in Augusta Praeroria, were analysed for 12 elements by atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy. Hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and non-linear mapping were performed on the analytical data in order to classify the objects in groups which could account for different provenances; soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) and K nearest neighbours (KNN) were used for solving doubtful assignments. The classification results indicate that local productions of terra sigillatu can be easily distinguished from the imported ones, and that common wares have compositional patterns which differ from those of both local and imported terrae sigillatue.

The composition diagrams of the La Graufesenque, Banassac and Montans Terra Sigillata are given as well as a calculation method to improve the separation between the workshops with compositions which are very similar. This method can then be generalized.
