The video encoder performs a mode decision by performing initial motion estimation on only a subset of possible block sizes to output motion information corresponding thereto, and determining, based upon the motion information corresponding to only the subset of possible of block sizes and upon other image-related analysis data, whether other block sizes are to be evaluated.

Method and apparatus for fast mode decision for interframes

A device incorporates a software-based H.264 video encoder for providing compressed, or encoded, video data. The H .264 encoder incorporates a timer algorithm such that the time available to the H.264 encoder within the macroblock mode decision and motion estimation framework is constrained, or restricted. The particular amount of time available to the H.264 encoder then determines a subset of available encoding modes that the H.264 encoder can use to encode a macroblock.

Method and Apparatus for Real-Time Frame Encoding

In High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the computational complexity has been increased so that an Early SKIP mode decision method is proposed by using coded block flag of an inter prediction unit (PU) to speed up mode decision with BD-bitrate increase. In this paper, we propose a fast SKIP mode decision algorithm to speed up PU mode decision for HEVC in a rate-distortion (RD) optimization sense. It is based on an adaptive linear predictor for PU mode type and available neighboring SKIP mode units on the quad-tree partition structure in HEVC for adaptive RD optimization. Moreover, the proposed method consists of both local (neighboring PUs) and global (previous PUs in current frame) level schemes on each coding unit (CU) level. In this way, it is possible to exploit high correlations between the RD cost of SKIP mode and spatial characteristics of video sequences by using the distribution of SKIP mode and a linear RD cost predictor. Experimental results show that the encoding computational complexity can be reduced by an average of 36 % with threshold RD cost, when compared to that of the HM 12 reference software.

Fast skip mode decision with rate-distortion optimization for High Efficiency Video Coding

In the H.264/AVC coding standard, the high computation cost of the full searching in the reference software JM-9.3 makes the encoding process inefficient. In this paper, the spatial-temporal correlations between the current frame and reference frame are analyzed to develop a fast mode decision method in which no extra image processes are used. Furthermore, the concept of drift compensation is adopted to avoid the error accumulation phenomenon during the mode decision process. The experimental results show that the computation cost may be reduced above 60% and the average PSNR is only dropped about 0.04db. Keywords: H.264, JM-9.3, Mode decision.

A Fast Mode Decision Method for H.264/AVC Using the Spatial-Temporal Prediction Scheme

In the H.264/AVC coding standard, seven motion estimation modes from 4 × 4 to 16 × 16 are used to find the minimum motion compensation error for each macroblock. However, the high computation cost of the full search method in the reference software JM-9.3 makes the encoding process inefficient. Therefore, the methods of applying the SAD (sum of absolute difference), homogeneous region analysis, and edge detection are developed to determine the optimum motion estimation mode. Nevertheless, the additional computation cost of image processing still reduces the efficiency of the motion compensation process. In this paper, the spatial-temporal correlations between the current frame and reference frame are analyzed to develop a fast mode decision method in which no extra image processes are used.
