Older construction workers constitute a major proportion of total South African construction employment. Demographic changes and an apparent growing loss of interest among young people in careers in the construction industry are contributing to an increase in the proportion of older workers in the industry. There is a resultant decline in the growth of new cohorts entering the labour market. Consequently the size of the older cohort relative to the size of the younger cohort increases. Additionally, general and chronic occupational and non-occupational diseases potentially reduce the overall labour force, shift the age structure due to mortality, change the skill composition of the labour supply, and increase labour turnover. This paper reports on a study that sought to establish the health status of the older worker cohort in construction. The study found that older workers had problems with several occupational and non-occupational diseases and presented with a range of musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory problems and skin infections. These diseases negatively affected work productivity in the industry and increased absenteeism. Further, the majority of workers required referral, many for unresolved non-occupational such as various skin, musculoskeletal, as well as upper and lower respiratory disorders. Recommended interventions include regular medical surveillance as part of employer-driven health promotion programs.

Physical examination is a critical element of any occupational health practice. When a physical examination is performed effectively, it can benefit both employer and the employee. The combination of the health history and physical examination provides a database for health surveillance, risk exposure, and disease prevention. The environment for the physical examination should be arranged to be as private as possible. Lighting should be adequate and equipment should be arranged on a clean surface. The client should be prepared for the physical examination with clear description of what will be completed. Physical examinations are usually based on the specific needs of the employer and employee. Additionally, the assessments are based on company policy and State Nurse Practice Act(s). Types of examinations conducted by the occupational health nurse may include the focused or comprehensive evaluation. A focused physical examination is used to investigate a specific body system related to the client's complaint. A comprehensive, systematic, head to toe examination is conducted for a complete physical assessment.

This qualitative descriptive study examined graduate nurse practitioner (NP) students’ experience of creating a digital story. There has been little research done that focuses on the use of digital storytelling (DS) in graduate nursing education to foster reflective thinking. DS provide NP education with new media pathways of literacy, learning, and creativity. The aims of the research 1) Explored various processes students used in the development of their DS; 2) Explored students’ learning experience as they listen to and interact with classmates; 3) Identified new insights about self and others. The digital story was assigned to students in a core NP course. This assignment allowed students to share introductions, reflections, and personal information while deconstructing and reconstructing the student’s own culture and identity as a part of a selfidentity assessment. Digital storytelling in nurse practitioner education: new pathways of learning

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a major challenge to the pre-employment health screening system for nurses looking for jobs. For this reason, a pre-employment screening system is needed that sort it easier for all parties (nurses as prospective employees, companies, and company owners) in the health screening system. To offer a health screening system in the form of Remote Pre-employment Health Screening for nurses from the occupational health nursing (OHN) perspectives. The study used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) Analysis with qualitative descriptive methods. The documents were extracted from Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and PubMed. The indicators included respondents (nurses), research methods (mixture of quantitative, document review, case study, opinion, and report), years (2016-2021), results (focus on pre-employment health screening), and language (English). Document search used the PICOT (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time) model. The search keywords were pre-employment health screening, OHN, and Covid-19. After analyzing the documents in the database (n=702), the records were eligible (n=10), and met the requirements for review (n=7). The findings of reviewed records were that the pandemic caused a disastrous impact on the nursing profession including the need to review the pre-employment health screening system. To prepare a remote pre-employment health screening system, the study suggests organization to a three in one formula: to make a memorandum of understanding, to set health examination standards, and to create an electronic application. Use of a structured health assessment tool provides a systematic approach to identification of health needs given the stated goals of maintaining employee health and securing a safe work setting.
