Modern Cryptography: Theory and Practice

The design of a process calculus for analysing security protocols is governed by three factors: expressing the security protocol in a precise and faithful manner, accommodating the variety of attack scenarios, and utilising the strengths (and limit the weaknesses) of the underlying analysis methodology. We pursue an analysis methodology based on control flow analysis in flow logic style, whose ability to analyse a variety of security protocols we have shown previously [7]. This paper develops a calculus, LySans, which allows for much greater control and clarity in the description of attack scenarios, gives a more flexible format for expressing protocols, and at the same time allows one to circumvent some of the `false positives' arising in [7].

A calculus for control flow analysis of security protocols

Authentication protocols are widely believed to be error prone because most analyses conclude with claims of discovering new attacks on the protocols. While proofs of security for authentication protocols are rightly viewed with circumspection, claims of attacks arc rarely challenged. We propose a closer examination of how protocol attacks are defined in the light of different conclusions of four different analyses of the Needham-Schroeder protocols. We argue that subtle paradigm shifts often occur during protocol analysis which affect the definition of a protocol attack. By becoming aware of these paradigm shifts, we can be more aware of what a specific attack actually accomplishes.

Many techniques, algorithms, protocols and tools have been developed in the different aspects of cyber-security, namely, authentication, access control, availability, integrity, privacy, confidentiality and non-repudiation as they apply to both networks and systems. "Web Services Security and E-Business" focuses on architectures and protocols, while bringing together the understanding of security problems related to the protocols and applications of the Internet, and the contemporary solutions to these problems. "Web Services Security and E-Business" provides insight into uncovering the security risks of dynamically-created content, and how proper content management can greatly improve the overall security. It also studies the security lifecycle and how to respond to an attack, as well as the problems of site hijacking and phishing.

A framework is described in which designs for key establishment protocols may be described at a high level of abstraction. This enables protocols to be designed without concern for implementation details, while emphasising the fundamentals elements required. Consideration of the natural alternatives leads to the definition of four fundamental classes of key establishment protocols into one of which most published protocols can be placed. Abstract and concrete protocols are described in each class, including some novel concrete designs.

A Framework for Design of Key Establishment Protocols

Design of cryptographic protocols for authentication and key management is known to be a difficult problem. Although much research has been devoted to analysis techniques there remains a lack of basic design principles. In the paper a common method of protocol design is identified which contributes to protocol problems in a number of ways. This is the practice of encrypting all relevant fields using a reversible cryptographic transformation. A new design principle and a complementary notation are introduced which help protocol designers to identify what form of encryption is really required. Several examples are used to illustrate the problems and to show how the design principle and notation may be used in practice.
