Further laboratory measurements of the beam-plasma discharge (BPD) produced when an energetic electron beam traverses an initially neutral gas are presented. The experimental data indicate that the critical beam current Ic at energy V, magnetic field B, and system length L required for ignition obeys the empirical relationship Ic ∝ V3/2/B0.7 PL at pressures P < 2 × 10−5 torr. This relationship appears to primarily describe the accumulation of ambient plasma density, collisionally produced by the beam itself, to a critical value where ωpe² ≈ ωce² at which ignition occurs. Additional measurements of the narrow-band cyclotron-related waves (fce < f < 1.4fce) observed at beam currents below BPD threshold do not clearly establish whether this instability is a necessary precursor to the BPD. The relevance of these experiments to past and planned electron beam experiments in space is briefly discussed.

Large-amplitude (10 to 100 μV m−1 Hz−½) natural radio emissions in a wide frequency range (100 kHz up to 2 MHz) are frequently observed on board the AUREOL/ARCAD 3 satellite at high latitude and at altitudes between 400 and 2000 km. The simultaneous measurement of the local cold plasma density allows the identification of cutoff and resonance frequencies. Three different kinds of wave are observed: (1) electrostatic emissions near the local value of the plasma frequency (fp), (2) electromagnetic whistler mode emissions, sometimes associated with type (1) emissions, and (3) electromagnetic Z mode emissions, also associated with type 1 emissions, but occurring more rarely than the whistler mode emissions and then only when fp is greater than the electron cyclotron frequency (fce). These emissions are always associated with high levels of ELF electrostatic turbulence and a high flux of low-energy precipitating electrons, extending in energy down to the lower limit of the detectors (∼100 eV). The statistical distribution of the emissions in geomagnetic coordinates shows an occurrence greater than 80% in the polar cusp region and between 25% and 60% in the nightside auroral zone. A generation mechanism for such emissions is proposed, based on the calculation of the growth rate of the kinetic Cherenkov instability, associated with a beamlike suprathermal tail in the parallel distribution of the bulk electron population. In particular, suprathermal, downward electron beams of about 100–200 eV energy, with a thermal spread of the same order, are found to be responsible for the generation of whistler mode and Z mode HF emissions in a source region extending down to 1000 km of altitude. It is suggested that such intense radio emissions should be considered as one of the energy dissipation processes resulting from magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, through interdependent electrodynamic mechanisms such as current systems, parallel anomalous resistivity, plasma turbulence, energy diffusion, and heating.

: During the shuttle's Spacelab-2 mission, the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) was released from the shuttle to freefly. At times during this freeflight when the PDP was magnetically connected to the shuttle, the Fast Pulsed Electron Generator (FPEG), located in the shuttle cargo bay, ejected a 1 keV - 50 mA electron beam. The plasma wave instrument on board the PDP detected intense whistler mode radiation during these beam ejections. This paper presents a study of a whistler mode emission detected during one particular continuous electron beam firing. Calculations indicate that the beam radiated approximately 1.6 mW in the whistler mode as the beam transversed the 200 meters from the shuttle to the PDP. The emissivity also decreased by about a factor of 10 over this same distance. The measured wave powers are 10 to the 7th power greater than wave powers expected from incoherent Cerenkov radiation, verifying that the radiation is generated by a coherent process. Estimates of the emissivity based on measured electric field intensities in the beam indicate that the whistler mode noise is produced by radiation from electron bunches created by an electrostatic beam plasma instability.

An analysis of whistler mode radiation from the Spacelab 2 electron beam

The plasma environment of the Spacelab 2 mission was investigated through the deployment of the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) by the Space Shuttle Orbiter and the Orbiter's ejection of a continuous 1-keV/50-mA electron beam along a field line. As the PDP flew by the beam, its plasma-wave instrument detected intense whistler-mode radiation originating from the beam. A detailed model has been developed of the coherent Cerenkov emission process, using a one-dimensional computer simulation of the beam to model the expected phase space structure of the electrons. The power calculated for the modeled 200-m beam segment can easily account for the measured whistler mode wave power.

Coherent Cerenkov radiation from the Spacelab 2 electron beam

The effects of electron beam emissions from Spacelab were recorded with onboard diagnostic instruments. The variation of the Spacelab-shuttle potential with respect to the ambient plasma near the scientific air lock was investigated. Data on the waves and instabilities triggered by the electron beams are discussed. Within the electron gyrofrequency and electron plasma frequency range, strong signals were detected by both electric and magnetic antennas during the beam emissions. The frequencies of the emitted waves were compared to the characteristic plasma frequencies to enable mode identification.

Phenomena Induced by Charged Particle Beams (PICPAB) are planned to be investigated during the first Spacelab flight (FSLP) using a European payload. The PICPAB experiment (Beghin et al., 1979) consists of two accelerators of electron and ion beams and associated diagnostic instruments including wave receivers, thermal plasma probes and return current particle energy-analysers. The functional tests using prototypes of those instruments have been carried out in the large vacuum chamber SIMLES (~ 300 m3) at CNES-S0PEMEA (Toulouse-France) in february 1980. The main purpose was to perform a simulation under conditions where the ambient neutral and ionized gas, magnetic field strength and lay-out of the different packages were as close as possible to those anticipated for FSLP mission. But such a simulation cannot be undertaken ignoring plasma physics processes which are associated with the neutralization of the gun body and of the beam itself, those problems which are precisely among scientific objectives of this experiment for FSLP mission
