We determine the abundance of i′-band dropouts in the recently released HST/ACS Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF). Because the majority of these sources are likely to be z≈ 6 galaxies whose flux decrement between the F775W i′-band and F850LP z′-band arises from Lyman-α absorption, the number of detected candidates provides a valuable upper limit to the unextincted star formation rate at this redshift. We demonstrate that the increased depth of UDF enables us to reach an 8 σ limiting magnitude of z′AB= 28.5 (equivalent to 1.5 h−270 M⊙ yr−1 at z= 6.1, or 0.1 L⋆UV for the z≈ 3U-drop population), permitting us to address earlier ambiguities arising from the unobserved form of the luminosity function. We identify 54 galaxies (and only one star) at z′AB 1.3 over the deepest 11-arcmin2 portion of the UDF. The characteristic luminosity (L⋆) is consistent with values observed at z≈ 3. The faint end slope (α) is less well constrained, but is consistent with only modest evolution. The main change appears to be in the number density (Φ*). Specifically, and regardless of possible contamination from cool stars and lower-redshift sources, the UDF data support our previous result that the star formation rate at z≈ 6 was approximately six times less than at z≈ 3. This declining comoving star formation rate [0.005 h70 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at z≈ 6 at LUV > 0.1 L⋆ for a Salpeter initial mass function (IMF)] poses an interesting challenge for models which suggest that LUV > 0.1 L⋆ star-forming galaxies at z≃ 6 reionized the Universe. The short-fall in ionizing photons might be alleviated by galaxies fainter than our limit, or a radically different IMF. Alternatively, the bulk of reionization might have occurred at z≫ 6.

The Star Formation Rate of the Universe at z=6 from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We study the escape of Lyman continuum radiation from the disks of dwarf starburst galaxies, with and without supershells, by solving the radiation transfer problem of stellar radiation through them. We model disks with Md=10^8-10Msun, with exponential surface density profiles as a function of redshift, and model the of repeated supernova explosions driving supershells out of the disks, using the hydrodynamic simulation code, ZEUS-3D. The amount of star formation is assumed proportional to mass above some density threshold. We vary the threshold to explore the range of star formation efficiencies, f*=0.006, 0.06, and 0.6. We find that the interstellar gas swept up in dense supershells can effectively trap the ionizing photons, before the supershells blow out of the disks. The blow-outs then create galactic outflows, chimneys which allow the photons to escape directly to the intergalactic medium. Our results are consistent with escape fractions of less than 0.1 measured in local dwarf starburst galaxies, because they are likely observed while the starbursts are young, before blow-out. We suggest that high-redshift dwarf starburst galaxies may make a substantial contribution to the UV background radiation with total escape fractions >0.2, as expected if star formation efficiencies >0.06.

The Influence of Supershells and Galactic Outflows on the Escape of Ionizing Radiation from Dwarf Starburst Galaxies

Recent simulations of the formation of the first luminous objects in the universe predict isolated very massive stars to form in dark matter halos with virial temperatures large enough to allow significant amounts of molecular hydrogen to form. We construct a semi-analytic model based on the PressSchechter formalism and calibrate the minimum halos mass that may form a primordial star with the results from extensive adaptive mesh refinement simulations. The model also includes star formation in objects with virial temperatures in excess of ten thousand Kelvin. The free parameters are tuned to match the optical depth measurements by the WMAP satellite. The models explicitly includes the negative feedback of the destruction of molecular hydrogenby a soft UV background which is computed self-consistently. We predict high redshift supernova rates as one of the most promising tools to test the current scenario of primordial star formation. The supernova rate from primordial stars peaks at redshifts ∼ 20. Using an analytic model for the luminosities of pair-instability supernovae we predict observable magnitudes and discuss possible observational strategies. Such supernovae would release enough metals corresponding to a uniform enrichment to a few hundred thousands of solar metalicity. If some of these stars produce gamma ray bursts our rates will be directly applicable to understanding the anticipated results from the SWIFT satellite. This study highlights the great potential for the James Webb space telescope in probing cosmic structure at redshifts greater than 20. The Number of Supernovae from Primordial Stars in the Universe

We present a thorough and detailed investigation of baryon isocurvature models including realistic thermal histories, \ie, late or partial reionization of the universe and compact object formation after standard recombination Constraints on these models are imposed from spectral distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), number fluctuations in galaxy counts $\sigma_8$, and recent CMB anisotropy observations Since the status of degree scale anisotropies is as yet unclear, the lack of spectral distortions is the most serious constraint on the spectral index of initial fluctuations: $-12 \simlt n \simlt -05$ in partially ionized models and $-12 \simlt n \simlt -09$ in compact object dominated universes in order to avoid significant bias in galaxy formation Full ionization of the universe before $z = 300$ is also forbidden by this constraint Intermediate scale CMB fluctuations which are significantly larger than standard CDM is a {\it robust} prediction of these models Many models are consequently in conflict with the recent degree scale detections by Python, ARGO, and MSAM, \eg, compact object dominated models with $\Omega_0 \simlt 02$ Moreover, {\it all} models will be ruled out if the low CMB fluctuations on degree scales as detected by the SP91 13 point scan are confirmed On the other hand, most models fare well compared with the high Tenerife and MAX detections

Thermal History Constraints on the Isocurvature Baryon Model

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large (6.6 m), cold (<50 K), infrared (IR)-optimized space observatory that will be launched early in the next decade into orbit around the second Earth–Sun Lagrange point. The observatory will have four instruments: a near-IR camera, a near-IR multi-object spectrograph, and a tunable filter imager that will cover the wavelength range, 0.6 < λ < 5.0 μm, while the mid-IR instrument will do both imaging and spectroscopy from 5.0 < λ < 29 μm. The JWST science goals are divided into four themes. The End of the Dark Ages: First Light and Reionization theme seeks to identify the first luminous sources to form and to determine the ionization history of the early universe. The Assembly of Galaxies theme seeks to determine how galaxies and the dark matter, gas, stars, metals, morphological structures, and active nuclei within them evolved from the epoch of reionization to the present day. The Birth of Stars and Protoplanetary Systems theme seeks to unravel the birth and early evolution of stars, from infall onto dust-enshrouded protostars to the genesis of planetary systems. The Planetary Systems and the Origins of Life theme seeks to determine the physical and chemical properties of planetary systems including our own, and investigate the potential for the origins of life in those systems. To enable these science goals, JWST consists of a telescope, an instrument package, a spacecraft, and a sunshield. The telescope primary mirror is made of 18 beryllium segments, some of which are deployed. The segments will be brought into optical alignment on-orbit through a process of periodic wavefront sensing and control. The instrument package contains the four science instruments and a fine guidance sensor. The spacecraft provides pointing, orbit maintenance, and communications. The sunshield provides passive thermal control. The JWST operations plan is based on that used for previous space observatories, and the majority of JWST observing time will be allocated to the international astronomical community through annual peer-reviewed proposal opportunities.

The WMAP satellite has completed 1 year of measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation using 20 differential high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) based radiometers. All the radiometers are functioning nominally, and characterizations of the on-orbit radiometer performance are presented, with an emphasis on properties that are required for the production of sky maps from the timeordered data. A radiometer gain model, used to smooth and interpolate the CMB dipole gain measurements, is also presented. No degradation in the sensitivity of any of the radiometers has been observed during the first year of observations.
