Continuous electricity production from artificial wastewater using a mediator-less microbial fuel cell

Chromium is present in different types of industrial effluents, being responsible for environmental pollution. Traditionally, the chromium removal is made by chemical precipitation. However, this method is not completely feasible to reduce the chromium concentration to levels as low as required by environmental legislation. Biosorption is a process in which solids of natural origin are employed for binding heavy metals. It is a promising alternative method to treat industrial effluents, mainly because of its low cost and high metal binding capacity. In this work the chromium biosorption process by Sargassum sp. seaweed biomass is studied. Sargassum sp. seaweed, which is abundant in the Brazilian coast, has been utilized with and without milling. The work considered the determination of chromium-biomass equilibrium data in batch system. These studies were carried out in order to determine some operational parameters of chromium sorption such as the time required for the metal-biosorbent equilibrium, the effects of biomass size, pH and temperature. The results showed that pH has an important effect on chromium biosorption capacity. The biosorbent size did not affect chromium biosorption rate and capacity.

Biosorption Of Chromium(iii) By Sargassum Sp. Biomass

Potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in edible marine fish have been widely reported from at least 15 different regions or countries in the literature. This evidently demonstrates the importance of monitoring the PTMs in fish fillets from a human health risk (HHR) point of view. This study aims to assess the HHR of Cu and Zn in 19 species of marine fish from popular marine fish loading sites at Setiu in Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, collected between August 2016 and February 2017. With overall ranges of concentrations (mg/kg dry weight) of Cu (1.50–7.83), and Zn (24.1–80.5), the 19 species of marine fishes from Setiu are good sources of these essential elements because they are below the maximum permissible limits set by seafood safety guidelines. The target hazard quotient values of Cu and Zn were lower than one, indicating non-carcinogenic risks of Cu and Zn in fish consumption. It was also found that the calculated values of the estimated weekly intake were below the established provisional tolerable weekly intake of Cu and Zn. It can be concluded that the consumption of fish from Setiu would not pose adverse effects from the PTMs to consumers. Nonetheless, continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure the safety of consumers who rely heavily on marine fish in Setiu coastal waters.

Food safety issues associated with aquatic food products become more important with the increasing consumption and followed by its ongoing challenges. The objective of this paper is to review the food safety hazards and health risks related to aquatic food products for the Southeast Asian region. These hazards can be categorized as microplastics (MPs) hazard, biological hazards (pathogenic bacteria, biogenic amines, viruses, parasites), and chemical hazards (antimicrobial, formaldehyde, heavy metal). In different Southeast Asian countries, the potential health risks of aquatic food products brought by food hazards to consumers were at different intensity and classes. Among all these hazards, pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobials, and heavy metal were a particular concern in the Southeast Asian region. With environmental changes, evolving consumption patterns, and the globalization of trade, new food safety challenges are created, which put forward higher requirements on food technologies, food safety regulations, and international cooperation.

Industri pengolahan hasil perikanan mengkonsumsi air mencapai 20m3/ton produk yang dihasilkan tergantung pada teknologi yang digunakan, jenis ikan yang diproses dan produk yang dihasilkan. Limbah cair yang dihasilkannya mengandung bahan organik yang tinggi dengan beban mencapai 20 kg BOD/ ton. Beban limbah yang tertinggi berasal dari industri pengalengan dan pembuatan tepung ikan (fishmeal). Limbah yang baru diolah bertujuan untuk menyisihkan beban organik, belum mencapai penyisihan total nitrogen yang terkandung didalamnya. Kandungan nitrit dan nitrat yang masih tinggi akan menurunkan kualitas badan air penerima. Teknologi pengolahan limbah cair perikanan dengan kombinasi proses aerobik dan anoksik menjadi pilihan yang baik dikembangkan untuk penyisihan nitrogen yang ada di dalam limbah. Karakterisasi dan Recovery Protein dari Air Cucian Minced Fish dengan Membran Reverse Osmosis

Tuna (Thunnus sp.) by-products from frozen loin and canning industry especially the eye is rich in proteins and in lipids consisting of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). That requires protective agent (antioxidant) to inhibit the oxidation naturally present and predicted to be protein peptides. Enzymatic hydrolysis of protein is an appropriate method to produce bioactive peptide with such nutraceutical/pharmaceutical function such as an antioxidant peptide. This study aimed to produce protein hydrolysate having a function as anwith an antioxidant activity from eye of tuna through enzymatic hydrolysis and determining the antioxidant activity by DPPH methods. Protein soluble content of tuna’s eye protein hydrolysate (TEPH) ranged from 59.98±0.130 to 94.90±0.002%. The degree of hydrolysis (DH) of TEPH was about 9.10±0.28 to 16.14±0.09%. The highest inhibition of DPPH radical scavenging activity was 93.57±0.05% (at 5 mg/mL) was obtained with a DH of 11.35±0.002% at the concentration 0.1% of papain for 6 hours hydrolysis. ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF PROTEIN HYDROLYSATE PRODUCED FROM TUNA EYE (Thunnus sp.) BY ENZYMATIC HYDROLYSIS

Highly organic substances contained within fishery industrial wastewater will pollute the environment when it flows into public water body without any previous treatment. Chitosan is polymer substance extracted from shrimp shell which is able to wrap solid particles suspended in liquids and bring them together and agglomerate makes it suitable as a coagulant aid. The objective of this recsearch was to study the effectiveness of chitosan in order to decrease pollutant parameter in the fishery industrial wastewater. The quality of chitosan used during this research confirmed to Protan Laboratory standard. Results showed that chitosan as a coagulant has good performance in pH range of 6.6-6.8 and at concentration of 175-225 ppm. Within these conditions, chitosan could decrease turbidity value 94.33%-95.17%, TSS (Total Suspended Solids) 95.10%-95.82%, BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) 72.09%-79%, COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) 76.72%-79.40%, TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen) 12.50%-27.82%, NH3 80.84%-82.56%, NO2-N 47.69%-54.74%, NO3-N 19.39%-40.14%. The best chitosan concentration to use was at 200 ppm. The quality of effluent produced confirmed to Standard Regulation Indonesian Ministry of Environmental for Standard of Industrial Wastewater no.:KEP-51/MENLH/10/1995.

Pemanfaatan Kitosan pada Pengolahan Limbah Cair Industri Perikanan

Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is one of the alternative technologies which can convert chemical energy to electrical energy through a catalytic reaction using microorganisms. The technology can be implemented for wastewater handling such as fish processing wastewater which contains highly in organic substances. The research objective was to measure the performance of MFC system using fishery processing wastewater in order to generate bioelectricity and to reduce its organic pollution load within a different material of the electrode. The electrode materials used were aluminum, iron, carbon graphite, and also the combination of aluminum and carbon graphite. The research carried out in three phases: production of fishery wastewater, assembly of MFC single chamber system and measurement of the bioelectricity produced. The bioelectricity power resulted during 120 hours of observation were 0.23V for aluminum, 0.17V for iron, 0.19V for carbon graphite, and 0.34V for the combination between aluminum and carbon graphite averagely. The MFC system can also  decrease the organic load parameter of wastewater as much as total Nitrogen was 61%, BOD 30.11%, COD 59.34%, and total Nitrogen Ammonia 12.45%. The increasing of activated sludge biomass occurred on the last observation with MLSS and MLVSS values respectively 7,066.67 mg/L and 6,100 mg/L.
