An integrated electric motor and controller reduces weight and provides improved performance of devices associated with internal combustion engines such as EGR valves, turbocharger wastegates and the like. The integrated motor and controller includes an electric motor having an output shaft driving a first segmented wheel and adjacent sensor which provide signals regarding the rotation and direction of rotation of the motor output. The motor also drives a gear train having an output member which bi-directionally either rotates or translates linearly. A position coding feature is disposed on the output member and adjacent sensors provide signals regarding the position of the output member. The sensors drive a microcontroller which in turn drives the electric motor. The sensors, the electric motor, the gear train and the microcontroller are all disposed within a common housing.

An exhaust gas recirculation system includes a valve body having an exhaust port adapted for fluid communication with a source of exhaust gas, an intake port adapted for fluid communication with the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, and a valve member. The system further includes a drive member mounted to the valve body and including a mechanical output which is rotatable in opposed first and second directions. A gear train is operatively disposed between and in engagement with the rotatable mechanical output of the drive member and the valve member. More specifically, the mechanical output rotating in either of the first or second directions imparts linear, reciprocal motion directly to the valve member through the gear train thereby moving the valve member between opened and closed positions to control the flow of exhaust gas from the exhaust port to the intake port. In addition, the exhaust gas recirculation system further includes a sensor integrated into the valve body and operatively connected to the valve member for detecting the linear position of the valve member as it is reciprocated between its open and closed positions.

The outer periphery of a spring inner periphery guide is provided with a plurality of groove portions as abrasive dust removing means for removing abrasive dust at least from a sliding contact portion between the outer periphery of the spring inner periphery guide and the inner periphery of a default spring, so that individual edge portions of the plurality of groove portions can rub the inner periphery of the default spring to scrape off abrasive dust from the inner periphery of the default spring and direct the abrasive dust into the plurality of groove portions.

An electronic throttle control pedal pivotally couples a lever arm to a pedal beam and biases the beam for resisting an applying force to the pedal beam and for biasing sliding surfaces together in frictional contact. A compression spring carried between a mounting bracket and the lever arm biases the pedal beam toward an idle position while at the same time causing a frictional force between the frictional surfaces, such that displacing the pedal beam with an applying force compresses the spring which increases a frictional force between the friction surfaces with an increasing displacement of the pedal beam distal end, and reducing the displacement through a retracting force on the pedal beam distal end expands the compression spring and returns the pedal beam to the idle position through a hysteresis force response for the pedal beam displacement. The hysteresis may be tuned by modifying element dimensions of the pedal.

An electronic throttle control system having a housing 22 with a motor 40 , throttle valve 60 , gear mechanism 100 , and failsafe mechanism. A main spring member 130 positioned between the housing 22 and a gear mechanism 104 , which in turn is attached to the throttle valve shaft 62 , biases the throttle plate 60 towards the closed position. A spring-biased default mechanism 132, 134 biases the throttle plate 60 from its closed position to a default or “limp-home” position.

A spring member (132) attached to a gear member (104) and default lever (134), and which is biased when the throttle valve (60) is in its fully open and closed positions, operates to open the throttle valve in the event of an electric failure, thus allowing the vehicle to limp home. The spring member (132), default lever (134) and associated gear member (104) are interfit together as a group and inserted in the housing (22) as a subassembly (140), thus improving assembly time and expense.
