A memory system architecture/interconnect topology that includes at least one point-to-point link between a master, and at least one memory subsystem. The memory subsystem includes a buffer device coupled to a plurality of memory devices. The memory system may be upgraded through dedicated point-to-point links and corresponding memory subsystems. The master communicates to the plurality of memory devices in each memory subsystem through the respective buffer device via each point-to-point link.

Systems, among other embodiments, include topologies (data and/or control/address information) between an integrated circuit buffer device (that may be coupled to a master, such as a memory controller) and a plurality of integrated circuit memory devices. For example, data may be provided between the plurality of integrated circuit memory devices and the integrated circuit buffer device using separate segmented (or point-to-point link) signal paths in response to control/address information provided from the integrated circuit buffer device to the plurality of integrated circuit buffer devices using a single fly-by (or bus) signal path. An integrated circuit buffer device enables configurable effective memory organization of the plurality of integrated circuit memory devices. The memory organization represented by the integrated circuit buffer device to a memory controller may be different than the actual memory organization behind or coupled to the integrated circuit buffer device. The buffer device segments and merges the data transferred between the memory controller that expects a particular memory organization and actual memory organization.

A memory device with multiple clock domains. Separate clocks to different portions of the control circuitry create different clock domains. The different domains are sequentially turned on as needed to limit the power consumed. The turn on time of the domains is overlapped with the latency for the memory access to make the power control transparent to the user accessing the memory core. The memory device can dynamically switch between a fast and a slow clock depending upon the needed data bandwidth. The data bandwidth across the memory interface can be monitored by the memory controller, and when it drops below a certain threshold, a slower clock can be used. The clock speed can be dynamically increased as the bandwidth demand increases.

A signaling system is disclosed. The signaling system includes a first integrated circuit (IC) chip to receive a data signal and a strobe signal. The first IC includes circuitry to sample the data signal at times indicated by the strobe signal to generate phase error information and circuitry to output the phase error information from the first IC device. The system further includes a signaling link and a second IC chip coupled to the first IC chip via the signaling link to output the data signal and the strobe signal to the first IC chip. The second IC chip includes delay circuitry to generate the strobe signal by delaying an aperiodic timing signal for a first time interval and timing control circuitry to receive the phase error information from the first IC chip and adjust the first time interval in accordance with the phase error information.

A delay-locked loop incorporates binary-coupled capacitors in a capacitor bank to produce a variable capacitance along a delay line. The variable capacitance allows a delay of the variable delay line to be varied. In response to an input clock signal, the variable delay line produces a delayed output clock signal that is compared at a race detection circuit to the input clock signal. If the delayed clock signal leads the input clock signal, the race detection circuit increments a counter that controls the binary-coupled capacitors. The incremented counter increases the capacitance by coupling additional capacitance to the variable delay line to delay propagation of the delayed clock signal. If the delayed clock signal lags the original clock signal, the race detection circuit decrements the counter to decrease the capacitance, thereby decreasing the delay of the variable delay line. The race detection circuit includes an arbitration circuit that detects when the delayed clock signal and the variable clock signal are substantially synchronized and disables incrementing or decrementing of the counter in response.

The present invention provides for a method of operation for a memory system having a memory controller integrated circuit, a plurality of memory integrated circuits, particularly DRAMs, and a plurality of signal lines connected to memory controller and the memory integrated circuits. To avoid the problem of the problem of skew between the signals to and from the DRAMs, the method of operation determines a delay between an issued read command and receipt of signals from a selected DRAM by the controller integrated circuit in response to the read command, and sets a read delay in the selected DRAM. Further steps in the operation include the determination of the delay between an issued read command and the receipt of signals from each one of the DRAMs by the memory controller integrated circuit in response to a read command, and setting the read delay in each one of the DRAMs so that the delays between an issued read command and receipt of signals from each one of the DRAMs by the controller integrated circuit are equal. Besides the operating speeds of the individual DRAMs, skew which is dependent upon the position of the DRAMs along a bus caused by bus loading effects, signal reflections, noise, etc., is reduced, if not eliminated.
