This paper describes the first phase of an international project that is exploring how historians locate primary resource materials in the digital age, what they are teaching their Ph.D. students about finding research materials, and what archivists are doing to facilitate access to these materials. Preliminary findings are presented from a survey of 300 historians studying American History from leading institutions of higher education in the U.S. Tentative conclusions indicate the need to provide multiple pathways of access to historical research materials including paper-based approaches and newer digital ones. The need for user education, especially in regard to electronic search methodologies is indicated.

Uncovering Impact: The Influence of Archives on Student Learning

This study is the first to focus on how developments in research trends, technology, and other factors have changed archival user studies. How have they changed in the past thirty years? How have they been conducted? This study examines and analyzes the US and Canadian literature on archival user studies to trace their past, characterize their present, and uncover the issues and challenges facing the archival community in conducting user studies. It discusses findings and gives suggestions for further archival user studies.

Archivists need to reconsider and develop new approaches to the important issue of the use of archival material. Six approaches to this challenge are suggested and discussed: developing better means of tracking research use; improving procedures for interpreting and reporting on that use; promoting increased research use; emphasizing use as a means of garnering program support; reaching out to the user community for assistance in dealing with certain archival issues; and expanding the concept of reference service to a broader notion of researcher service or public service.
