The interest for core-shells has been increased in the recent years due to their improved and modifiable properties. In this work, Fe3O4-TiO2 and Fe3O4-SiO2 core-shells were successfully synthesized from an industrially produced magnetite-rich powder with micro- and nanometric particle sizes, superparamagnetic behavior and saturation magnetization of 49 emu/g. The reverse microemulsion method was used to the synthesis of these core-shells. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, electron microscopy (SEM-TEM), and magnetization curves were used to characterize the solids. Core-shells with different morphology and size, coating of crystalline TiO2 (anatase) or amorphous silica, and superparamagnetic performance at room temperature (300 K) were obtained.

Fe3O4-TiO2 and Fe3O4-SiO2 Core-shell Powders Synthesized from Industrially Processed Magnetite (Fe3O4) Microparticles

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or endotoxin is an amphiphilic macromolecule found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. Even low amounts of LPS could result in death. Therefore, sensitive detection of endotoxin in the range of ng.mL−1 is vital. The dual electrochemical detection of endotoxin was designed. Thiourea was utilized to conjugate the magnetic graphene-based nanocomposite to a pair of amino-modified aptamers to increase the selectivity and sensitivity through the increase of active space occupied by aptamers attached to the nanocomposite. X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, VSM, FE-SEM, and TEM were applied to study nanomaterials. Electrochemical techniques, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), Square‐wave voltammetry (SWV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were accomplished to study electrochemical properties of the aptasensor. Both labeled, and label-free electrochemical detection of endotoxin were performed using methylene blue and ferrocyanide, respectively. The aptasensor exhibits the limit of detection as low as 4 fg/mL and 0.2 fg/mL, with linear range of detection 0.1–0.9 pg.mL−1 and 0.01–0.09 pg.mL−1 for ferrocyanide and methylene blue, respectively. The aptasensor showed a considerable response to LPS over other biomolecules like glucose. This aptasensor exhibited a good response to the serum of patient and normal people, which certificates its practicality in medical aims. 

A novel labeled and label-free dual electrochemical detection of endotoxin based on aptamer-conjugated magnetic reduced graphene oxide-gold nanocomposite

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone tumor in children and young people. Traditional surgical excision combined with chemotherapy presents many limitations, such as resistance and systemic side effects of chemotherapy drugs, postoperative recurrence, and bone defects. Given these limitations, novel therapeutic modalities for OS treatment using nanometer-sized platform-based chemotherapeutic delivery have emerged as a promising alternative therapy. This form of therapy offers multiple advantages, such as accurate delivery of the drug to the tumor site and repair of limited bone defects after tumor resection. In this review, we briefly summarize nanoplatforms, including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles, nanomicelles, dendrimers, nanocapsules, and exosomes. The essential shortcomings involved in these nanoplatforms, such as poor stability, immunogenicity, insufficient circulation, and drug leakage are also discussed, and related solutions are briefly proposed. Finally, the application prospects of nanoplatforms in the treatment of OS are discussed.

The roles of nanotechnology and internet of nano things in healthcare transformation

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recognized as the most powerful clinical imaging modality due to its ability to produce detailed three-dimensional anatomical images and high spatial resolution in a non-invasive manner without the use of harmful radioactive nuclides or ionizing radiation. Conventional small molecule contrast agents (CAs) for MRI, such as paramagnetic transition metal ion chelates or iron oxide nanoparticles, are limited by lower relaxivity, shorter blood circulation time and their potential toxic effects. Functional polymers capable of being detected by MRI have therefore become attractive, offering the unique advantage of pre-design due to their chemical flexibility, structural diversity, and tailoring of properties. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a powerful tool that not only enables the precise formation of macromolecular building blocks with complex structures and functions, but also provides a direct method for preparation of polymeric nanoparticles with multiple morphologies suitable for biomedical applications. In addition, when combining RAFT polymers with inorganic/metallic complex nanocomposites, the polymer provides the ability to encapsulate therapeutic molecules, thereby combining diagnostic and therapeutic functions in what is known as a theranostic nanomedicine. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the development of multifunctional polymers as MRI CAs designed and prepared by RAFT polymerization and their performance in diagnosis and treatment of disease. In addition, the review will address the challenges and future opportunities for RAFT-mediated MRI-based theranostics in guiding the treatment of diseases including malignant tumors. 

Advances and Prospects of RAFT Polymerization-derived Nanomaterials in MRI-assisted Biomedical Applications

In these recent years, magnetite (Fe3O4) has witnessed a growing interest in the scientific community as a potential material in various fields of application namely in catalysis, biosensing, hyperthermia treatments, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents and drug delivery. Their unique properties such as metal-insulator phase transitions, superconductivity, low Curie temperature, and magnetoresistance make magnetite special and need further investigation. On the other hand, nanoparticles especially gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) exhibit striking features that are not observed in the bulk counterparts. For instance, the mentioned ferromagnetism in Au NPs coated with protective agents such as dodecane thiol, in addition to their aptitude to be used in near-infrared (NIR) light sensitivity and their high adsorptive ability in tumor cell, make them useful in nanomedicine application. Besides, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are known as an antimicrobial agent. Put together, the [Formula: see text] nanocomposites with tunable size can therefore display important demanding properties for diverse applications. In this review, we try to examine the new trend of magnetite-based nanomaterial synthesis and their application in catalysis and nanomedicine.
