This paper explores whether teachers’ habits and assumptions about their practice can be enhanced by continued professional development through nurturing self-awareness of lived experiences. Within the paper a practical understanding of critical reflection as a process is explored and particular attention is given to Moon’s assertion that one person cannot make another person reflect. Reflection as a process is re-evaluated through the application of Theory U and the axiom that reflection needs to start with the self. The paper’s central argument is that at the heart of critical reflection is the need for embodied readiness. Without such openness as the first step, critical reflection is misinterpreted. Reflecting on reflection: improving teachers’ readiness to facilitate participatory learning with young children

The impact of flash glucose monitoring on adults with type 1 Diabetes' eating habits and relationship with food.

Introduction Men who have sex with men (MSM) remain at highest risk of HIV acquisition in England. We assessed recent national trends in HIV diagnoses and tests among MSM attending specialist sexual health clinics (SHCs) in England. Methods Numbers of HIV diagnoses and tests in MSM were obtained from GUMCADv2, the national surveillance system for sexually transmitted infections. Trends were stratified by HIV testing history (new/repeat-testers in last 2 years) and service location (London/Outside-London). Student’s t-tests were used to assess the differences in mean numbers of HIV diagnoses and tests between Q4/2014–Q3/2015 and Q4/2015–Q3/2016. Results A decline in HIV diagnoses from 515 to 427 (17%) was observed between Q4/2014–Q3/2015 and Q4/2015–Q3/2016 (p=0.05). Greatest declines were in London SHCs (276–209; 24%; p=0.04) and among new-testers (390–308; 21%; p=0.03). In London SHCs, there was a 29% diagnosis decline among new-testers (195–138; p=0.03) with no evidence of a difference in repeat-testers (81–71; p=0.33); HIV tests in repeat-testers increased 15% (9,768–11,270; p=0.02) but remained stable among new-testers (7,166–6,638; p=0.28). In Outside-London SHCs, HIV diagnoses remained stable in new- (194–170; p=0.06) and repeat-testers (44–48; p=0.52) while HIV testing increased 14% in new- (7,679–8,734; p=0.05) and 16% in repeat-testers (7,423–8,602; p=0.02). Discussion HIV diagnoses among MSM have decreased despite overall increased testing at SHCs. Stable levels of testing in new-testers as well as scale-up of repeat-testing may be contributing to diagnosis declines by earlier identification of undiagnosed infections. Further investigation of treatment and prevention initiatives among new- and repeat-testers in London SHCs is necessary.

O01 Recent trends in HIV diagnoses and tests among men who have sex with men attending sexual health clinics in england

Despite the high prevalence of diabetes in older people, there is limited information on optimal methods to support their diabetes management, including how to incorporate technology. This article reports on the results of semi-structured interviews with 41 adult participants with type 2 diabetes (mean age 74 ± 7 years) on their perspectives of a new model of care (the Older People With Type 2 Diabetes–Individualising Management With a Specialised Community Team [OPTIMISE] program) for older people with type 2 diabetes. The OPTIMISE program involved telemedicine consultations, home visits by a credentialed diabetes educator, and intermittent flash glucose monitoring. Human connection and relationships were key to the positive perspectives expressed by participants in this program that used technology to enhance the care of older people in their homes.

Older People With Type 2 Diabetes–Individualising Management With a Specialised Community Team (OPTIMISE): Perspectives of Participants on Care

Background and aims:  This qualitative project sought to evaluate the FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitor (FSLFGM) from the perspective of patients of an outpatient diabetes clinic. The aim was to evaluate patients’ experience of the device, and based thereon to create a brief assessment pro-forma for routine clinic use to justify continued prescription. Method:  A purposive sample was recruited. Telephone interviews were conducted until saturation was achieved. A total of 10 patients were interviewed using a flexible topic guide created in collaboration with the multidisciplinary diabetes team and a consultative panel of people with diabetes. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interviews. Results and conclusions:  Four superordinate themes, along with subordinate themes, were identified and triangulated by members of the multidisciplinary diabetes team: (1) checking bloods; (2) freedom; (3) impact on others; and (4) perceived disadvantages. Overall, patients reported a strongly positive experience of using the FSLGM, with all expressing a desire to continue use. Using these themes, a brief pro-forma was created for use in review clinics to facilitate discussion and to support decision-making about continued prescription.
