Cardiac rehabilitation: A review of current developments

The purpose of this article is twofold: first to provide an overview of the emergence of critical health psychology for those working in the related social and health sciences and as a review of its major developments for health psychology; and second to discuss critically the potential for critical health psychology to contribute to promoting public health with specific reference to the directives espoused by Prilleltensky (2003) and Murray and Campbell (2003). The identification of three philosophical phases of the emergence of critical health psychology is used to examine the directions of the field and the challenges facing critical health psychology in order to contribute to public and global health.

W E S U P P O RT the arguments advanced by Prilleltensky and Prilleltensky (this issue) regarding the development of a critical health psychology practice. We draw attention to the key issues their article raises for debate about the professionalization of health psychology, and argue that a critical approach to practice counters current drives towards professionalization and the unproblematic adoption of a scientist-practitoner model within health psychology. We maintain that reflexivity must occupy a central place in the development of critical health psychology practice.

This paper provides a preliminary address to the question of whether mainstream health psychology needs to be 'rethought' In order to do this, it first provides a definition of 'mainstream' health psychology, characterizing it as a discipline wedded to the increasingly popular 'biopsychosocial' model of health care and practice Because of the need to provide data consistent with 'biomedical' data and amenable to statistic analysis and modelling, commitment to the biopsychosocial model routinely involves the quantification of subjective experiences of health and illness Accordingly, health psychology has become increasingly acceptable to medical clinicians and researchers who are familiar with the language and procedures of quantitative investigation But this paper asks, at what cost? This Final Report of the European Federation of Professional Psychologists' Associations (EFPPA) Task Force on Health Psychology defines the nature and scope of health psychology and its possible future development to the year 2000 and beyond. Training needs and objectives are specified for professional health psychologists working in Europe. Practical and policy implications of medical progress and societal changes are discussed. The future development of health psychology as a profession depends on putting theory and policy into practice through the implementation of high quality training. Currently there are relatively few European countries where this has yet happened. Training programmes need to be introduced in all European countries within the framework of each member- country's national laws, regulations and practices.
