The exact origin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and source of introduction into humans has not been established yet, though it might be originated from animals. Therefore, we conducted a study to understand the putative reservoirs, transmission dynamics, and susceptibility patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in animals. Rhinolophus bats are presumed to be natural progenitors of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses. Initially, pangolin was thought to be the source of spillover to humans, but they might be infected by human or other animal species. So, the virus spillover pathways to humans remain unknown. Human-to-animal transmission has been testified in pet, farmed, zoo and free-ranging wild animals. Infected animals can transmit the virus to other animals in natural settings like mink-to-mink and mink-to-cat transmission. Animal-to-human transmission is not a persistent pathway, while mink-to-human transmission continues to be illuminated. Multiple companions and captive wild animals were infected by an emerging alpha variant of concern (B.1.1.7 lineage) whereas Asiatic lions were infected by delta variant, (B.1.617.2). To date, multiple animal species - cat, ferrets, non-human primates, hamsters and bats - showed high susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 in the experimental condition, while swine, poultry, cattle showed no susceptibility. The founding of SARS-CoV-2 in wild animal reservoirs can confront the control of the virus in humans and might carry a risk to the welfare and conservation of wildlife as well. We suggest vaccinating pets and captive animals to stop spillovers and spillback events. We recommend sustainable One Health surveillance at the animal-human-environmental interface to detect and prevent future epidemics and pandemics by Disease X.

Transmission dynamics and susceptibility patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in domestic, farmed and wild animals: Sustainable One Health surveillance for conservation and public health to prevent future epidemics and pandemics.

Epidemiology and molecular characterization of avian influenza virus in backyard poultry of Chattogram, Bangladesh.

| We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SCM) among medium to large scale household dairy farms in the southwestern district, Jhenaidah, Bangladesh from July to December 2019. A total of 78 (n=100) lactating cows from household dairy farms (N=32) were selected randomly as sampled populations. We screened the milk samples for SCM by using Surf Field Mastitis Test (SFMT). The prevalence of SCM varied among farm level [71.9% (95% CI: 53.3-86.3)], individual animal level [67.9% (95% CI: 56.4-86.3)] and quarter level [29.5% (95% CI: 24.5-34.9)]. Descriptive statistics represented the farmers and farm demography, characteristics of the sampled population, and overall management feature. In this study area, the farms followed the intensive rearing system where around 65.6% of the shed was concrete made. The farm animals were crossbred type where HF × Local was predominant. Random effect logistic regression calculated, body condition score (BCS) [OR=3.8 and 2.9, at cows level and quarter level respectively (BCS-2 vs. BCS-≥3)], and breed [OR=5.1 and 2.9, at cows level and quarter level respectively (HF× Sahiwal vs. HF × Local)] as potential risk factors. This study shows that SCM is highly prevalent in the study area, which is a major threat to the dairy industry’s production performance. Regular screening by SFMT, proper hygiene, improve the management system, and farmer’s awareness is required to control the disease.

Prevalence and risk factors of Avian Influenza Viruses among household ducks in Chattogram, Bangladesh

Mycobacterium bovis-caused bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a global public health concern and commercially significant zoonotic disease. Many wild and domesticated animals, including cattle, are susceptible to this fatal disease and play an important role in cross-species transmission. To gain a better understanding of bTB in dairy cattle, a bTB serological study is also necessary in order to identify efficient bTB control strategies in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, however, seroepidemiological research is either non-existent or limited (particularly Chattogram). To determine the seroprevalence of bTB and related possible risk factors in dairy cattle, a serological cross-sectional study was conducted (both animal and farm level). We estimated the seroprevalence of bTB was 7.5%(N=442) in this investigation, which also identified one animal-level and two farm-level possible risk factors. Individual animal risk factors included cattle source (own stock: OR=3.4, 95% CI: 1.4-8.1, p=0.006), and farm risk factors included population size (Larger: OR= 26.2, 95% CI: 2.2-319.1, p=0.010) and stocking density (Low and moderate: OR=19.6, 95%CI: 1.5-261.5, p=0.024). In the face-in housing system, there was also a higher risk of bTB seropositivity (OR=4.5). The research's key findings are thoroughly explored, and the findings will aid in the prevention and control of bTB in Bangladesh. In addition, early detection of positive cases, as well as their prompt removal and good farm management practices, can assist in preventing the spread of bTB to new human or bovine hosts. In underdeveloped nations like Bangladesh, a coordinated effort with local public health officials is critical for implementing an efficient TB control program.

Sero-epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis in dairy cattle in Chattogram, Bangladesh

| A descriptive epidemiological study has been conducted using hospital database of Teaching Veterinary Hospital (TVH) at Jhenaidah Government Veterinary College ( JGVC) from July 2018 to June 2019. The study aimed to estimate the proportionate prevalence of different livestock and poultry diseases along with their spatiotemporal distribution and drug prescribing pattern. A total of 960 clinical cases were recorded during the study period. Ectoparasitic cases were proportionately higher in cattle (25.2%), whereas Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) cases were more frequent in goat (53.4%). The proportionate prevalence of other cases in cattle was Fascioliasis (14.3%), Myiasis (11.2%) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) (7.2%). The proportionate prevalence of other cases in goats were vitamin and mineral deficiency (12.3%), bloat (5.2%), abscess (4.7%), and dog bite (1.2%). Again, the proportionate prevalence of poultry diseases were Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) (41.2%), salmonellosis (33.4%), fowl cholera (13.7%) and pox (7.8%). Most of the cattle cases were highly prevalent during the summer season except fascioliasis. In goat, PPR was predominated in the rainy season whereas myiasis was in the winter. Around 92% of disease cases were spatially located within the 2.5 km radius of the TVH of JGVC where only 0.9% of disease cases came from >10km away from TVH of JGVC. Simple linear regression identified a significant relation (P=0.01) with the distance and number of diseased animals came to the hospital. Antimicrobials belonging to β-Lactam group were most frequently prescribed for both poultry (48.6%) and cattle (32.5%) followed by goat (9.2%), however sulfar drugs (34.8%) were commonly prescribed for goat cases. This type of study is very novel in Jhenaidah region of Bangladesh that might contribute to the researchers for further investigation.
