The present study compares the demands for P of the initial nodule formation, and of the later growth and functioning of the nodulated root system in two inoculated lines of common bean (Coco blanc and BAT477). After germination and inoculation, seedlings were divided into two lots. One lot was grown under constant P supply, either 15 (low) or 250 (high) µM P, corresponding to provision of 120 and 2000 µmol P, respectively. In the second, seedlings were cultivated on the same medium supplied with 15 µM P for 24 days after germination, and then with 60 or 250 µM (total provision of P: respectively, 390 and 1530 µmol). Nodule number and biomass were significantly diminished by the low P (120 µmol) treatment, as compared with the other treatments. However, the intrinsic characteristics of the nodules (individual biomass and size, P concentration and efficiency of N fixation) did not depend on P availability. Although the bean line BAT477 was distinguished from the Coco blanc line through higher nodule number, size, biomass, and nitrogen fixation, both lines displayed analogous responses to P availability.

The concept of “organic farming” is based on a holistic view of farming systems, in which components are completely integrated into the system, such as the soil and its microbiota, climatic conditions, plants, and/or animals. The maintenance and the increase of fertility rely on the use of management practices and the application of different products from natural origins, which have the aim of providing high availability of nutrients for plant crops in agricultural soils. In this chapter, we will summarize the available information related to several inputs and practices allowed in the organic farming concept and vision, focusing on the benefits of their single or combined application. Moreover, we will introduce the latest novel applications of some of them, such as anaerobic digestion of manure, and present new alternatives, such as the use of biochar or the design of new biofertilization schemes.

Phosphorus is the second important key element after nitrogen as a nutrient in terms of quantitative plant requirement. Although phosphorus is abundant in soils (organic and inorganic forms), its availability is restricted as it occurs mostly in insoluble forms. The phosphorus content in soil is about 0.05 per cent (w/w) but only 0.1 per cent of the total phosphorus is available to plant because of poor solubility and its fixation in every type of soil. An adequate supply of phosphorus during early phase of plant development is important for laying down the primordia of plant parts. It plays significant role in root ramification, thereby imparting vitality to plant. It also helps in seed formation and in early maturation of crops. Poor availability or deficiency of phosphorus markedly reduces plant size and growth. Phosphorus accounts about 0.2 - 0.8 per cent of the plant dry weight. To satisfy crop requirements, phosphorus is usually added to soil as chemical fertilizer, however, synthesis of chemical fertilizer is highly energy intensive processes, and has long term impacts on the environment in terms of eutrophication, soil fertility depletion, carbon footprint. Moreover, plants use only a small amount of phosphorus, because about 80–90 per cent of added phosphorus is precipitated by metal–cation complexes, and rapidly fixed in soils. Such environmental concerns have led to the search for sustainable way of phosphorus nutrition of crops. In this regards phosphate–solubilizing microorganisms have been seen as best eco–friendly means for phosphorus nutrition of crop. Although, several bacterial (Pseudomonas and Bacilli) and fungal strains (Aspergillus and Penicillium) have been identified as PSM. Their performance under in situ conditions is not reliable and therefore, needs to be improved by using co-inoculation techniques. This review focuses on the diversity of PSM, mechanism of P solubilization, role of various phosphatase, impact of various factors on solubilization, the present and future scenario of their use and potential for application of this knowledge in managing a sustainable agricultural system

Space based multispectral remote sensing has gained considerable importance in providing information on earth resources in various disciplines. The LIS S -I and LIS S I I cameras of the Indian Remote Sensing Satellites IR S 1A/1 B have provided enormous data for remote sensing applications. From the point of view of data analysis and interpretation, the two important performance characteristics of multispectral cameras (sensors) are MT F and band to band registration. Band to band registration means that all the detectors corresponding to different spectral bands of a camera view the same area of the earth at a given instant of time. This paper describes the technique developed for Inter band alignment of multispectral CC D camera of the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite. Each multispectral camera (LISS) of IR S 1A/1 B consists of four spectral bands and each band assembly contains a refractive imaging lens filter assembly and a charge coupled linear array device of 2048 elements Each lens of E O module is assembled in such a way that the image format will be same for all the lenses and in the plane in which the format is matched, the MT F will also be maximum. The detectors of all the four bands are precisely oriented in the focal plane such that the different bands of the E O module view the same area at a given instant time. The alignment of CCD’s requires a positioning capability of less than a micron in a plane perpendicular to optical axis. It must be noted that the technique developed to accomplish this task does not make use of any micropostioners.

Inter-Band Alignment of Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing Camera

Introduction: The Cyclin D1 gene (CCND1) located on chromosome 11q13 is a positive regulator of the cell cycle. It encodes a nuclear protein that plays an important role in the tumorigenesis of human cancers.
Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate numerical aberration of Cyclin D1 gene by using Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization (FISH) in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC).
Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tumor section obtained from histological confirmed 50 OSCC patients from Department of Oncology, ENT and Pathology, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. The FISH technique was used to detect the numerical aberrations of Cyclin D1 using the Vysis protocol.
Results: The CCND1 numerical aberration was found positive in 18(36.0%) of 50 patients of OSCCs. Low level amplification was found in 9(11.3%), Cluster amplification 6(7.5%), polysomy 2(2.5%) and deletion of Cyclin D1 1(1.3%) respectively. There was not statistically significant association of histopathological differentiation, site of carcinoma, lymph node metastasis with gender. A significant association (P=0.004) was present between stage of carcinoma and types of numerical aberration of Cyclin D1 gene. Cyclin D1 aberration showed a significant association with lymph node metastasis (P=0.038). We have found no significant association between risk factors (tabacco chewing, smoking and alcohol consumption) to aberration of Cyclin D1 gene.
Conclusions: Analysis of the CCND1 numerical aberration using FISH on paraffin embedded tumor section may be a useful and practical method for predicting aggressive tumors, recurrence and clinical outcome in patients with OSCCs.
