Method and apparatus for controlling the same functions of a networked printer that can be manually selected from the front panel of the printer, but remotely through an interactive network board connectable to the printer via a bi-directional printer interface and connectable to a local area network via a local area network interface. A printer status request, for example, from an administrator's console, is issued on the local area network and directed to the interactive network board to cause the board to interrogate the printer over the printer interface for the status of the manually selectable functions, and to transfer the status of those manually selectable functions from the board onto the local area network. A command to alter the status of those manually selectable functions is issued on the local area network and directed to the interactive board, the command causing the board to transfer the altered status to the printer via the printer interface, whereupon the printer status for the manually selectable functions is altered.

A ROM firmware image is downloaded into a RAM on the designated board, preferably through the local area network interface. A verifying step verifies that the ROM firmware image stored in RAM is valid, and the PROM is controlled to erase memory locations, to transfer preservable data from the PROM into predetermined locations within the ROM firmware image stored in RAM, and to load into the PROM the ROM firmware image from the RAM. After completing the flash operation, the designated board may be re-initialized to execute instructions from the firmware image stored in the PROM.

Firmware resident in electrically erasable programmable read only memory ("EEPROM") can be updated by a user while maintaining the intelligence of a computer system during the updating process by a control logic device. The control logic device decodes address and control signals to provide a hardware partitioning of the firmware resident in the EEPROMs to prevent writing to protected partitions of the firmware. Transfer vectors are used to provide indirect accessing of subroutines resident in the firmware. During an updating process, a new version of a subroutine is stored in a free area in the EEPROMs before the transfer vector pointing to the old version of the subroutine is updated. The window of vulnerability to errors during the updating process is minimized by only updating a page of memory containing the transfer vector that points to the old version of the subroutine after the new version has been stored.

Method and apparatus by which an interactive network board can determine which of plural frame packet types is currently being used for LAN communication on a local area network. A prescanning software module simultaneously binds itself through a link support layer to each of the plural frame packet types and then deactivates itself. The LAN communication network is then monitored for broadcast traffic so as to capture a LAN frame packet, whereupon the link support layer provides data groups for the captured frame packet, each of the data groups corresponding to a different one of the plural frame packet types. The prescanner is reactivated so as to prescan each data group for a predetermined IPX header, and determines the frame packet type in correspondence to the data group having the predetermined IPX header. The prescanner is operative in a multiprotocol network environment in which two different LAN operating systems having respectively different operating protocols, such as Novell-compatible and UNIX-compatible operating systems, both carry on LAN communication on a single network bus. In this case, the prescanner repeats operations for each of the different operating protocols.

A laser printer receiving font data and program data through removable font cartridges, which permit the user to interchange the particular font style as desired, and allows the servicing of the system by a separate maintenance program which is downloaded from the font cartridge. The laser printer sytstem includes a microprocessor which reads a particular address on the font cartridge to indicate whether the information stored thereon is font data or program information. If the information on the cartridge is a program, a subsequent font cartridge address location indicates whether an operating system or a maintenance program is resident thereon and is to be downloaded into the microprocessor system. Upon loading of such maintenance program, the maintenance operator may individually select a specific test according to a sequence of interactive system prompts. The maintenance tests include manipulation of the mechanical elements and cycling of associated printer components, together with testing of electronic components incorporated in the system. The condition ascertained by the tests is reported on the front panel by error codes, and the system may be again placed into normal operation by cycling the power, wherein the font data is available through the same port which had previously received the maintenance program. The resulting laser printer provides a flexible and simplified operation and maintenance of a complex electronic and mechanical printer system with a minimum of user familiarity with internal system operations.

Upon occurrence of certain recoverable conditions for nonfatal errors, when recognized by the host system, the host computer may invoke a procedure to reset the data output device, and adjust its output data flow accordingly to provide a corrective measure in operation of the host computer with the data output device according to the present invention.
