Surgical tissue fasteners and related deployment systems and methods are disclosed. A tissue fastener used to join multiple tissue layers includes a first member, a second member, and a connecting member connecting the first and second members. In some embodiments, the first and second members are configured to expand from a delivered state to a deployed state in which the fastener secures the tissue layers together. Other tissue fastener embodiments include means for applying a substantially constant force on the tissue layers and/or means for adjusting a length of the connecting member between the first and second members.

Tissue fasteners and related deployment systems and methods

A device for attaching connective tissue to bone has a longitudinal axis and comprises an annular toggle member and a body member disposed distally of the toggle member, such that there is an axial space between the toggle member and the body member. The toggle member is movable between an undeployed position wherein the toggle member has a smaller profile in a direction transverse to the axis and a deployed position wherein the toggle member has a larger profile in the direction transverse to the axis. When installed in a desired procedural site, in suitable bone, suturing material extends axially through a center aperture in the annular toggle member, without being secured to or contacting the toggle member. This approach permits a suture attachment which lies entirely beneath the cortical bone surface, and which further permit the attachment of suture to the bone anchor without the necessity for tying knots, which is particularly arduous and technically demanding in the case of arthroscopic procedures.

Method and apparatus for attaching connective tissues to bone using a knotless suture anchoring device

A family of selectively absorbable/biodegradable, fibrous composite constructs includes different combinations of biostable and absorbable/biodegradable yarns assembled as initially interdependent, load-bearing components, transitioning to exhibit independent functional properties during in vivo end-use. The family of constructs consists of two groups, one group is made of fiber-reinforced composites of high compliance, absorbable matrices of segmented polyaxial copolyesters reinforced with multifilament yarn constructs, which are combinations of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers and at least one absorbable/biodegradable fiber selected from silk fibers and multifilament yarns made from linear segmented, l-lactide copolyesters and poly (3-hydroxyalkanoates, are useful in orthopedic, maxillofacial, urological, vascular, hernial repair and tissue engineering applications. The second group is made of coated and uncoated, warp-knitted mesh constructs for use in hernial, vascular, and urological tissue repair and tissue engineering.

Selectively absorbable/biodegradable, fibrous composite constructs and applications thereof

A suture anchor (30) for approximating tissue to bone comprises an anchor member (32) for securing the suture anchor (30) to the bone and a plurality of sutures (46) mounted to the anchor member (32) so that the sutures (46) extend outwardly from the anchor member (32). Each suture (46) has a sharp pointed end (54, 56) and a plurality of barbs (48) which permit movement of the sutures (46) through the tissue in one direction of movement of the pointed end (54, 56) and prevent movement of the sutures (46) relative to the tissue in the opposite direction. The ends (54, 56) of the sutures are inserted and pushed through the tissue along a curvilinear path in a direction away from the bone. The exit and entry points of two of the sutures (46) are adjacent and the paths of the sutures (46) substantially mirror one another.

Suture anchor and method

A bone anchor insertion device (10) comprises a handle (12), a nosepiece (14) connected to a distal end of the handle, a bone anchor connected to the nosepiece (14), and an actuator (22) disposed on the handle (12) for deploying the bone anchor, which suture is also fixed to a portion of soft tissue to be attached to a portion of bone. A suture ratchet (20) or tensioning mechanism is disposed in the handle (12) for tensioning suture which is associated with the bone anchor. This mechanism (20) permits precise tensioning, while also permitting one hand operation, thereby allowing the practitioner to use his or her other hand for other activities, such as camera operation or the like.

The suture features a multifilament cover formed of braided strands of ultra high molecular weight long chain polyethylene and polyester. The cover surrounds a core formed of twisted strands of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. The suture, provided in a #2 size, has the strength of #5 Ethibond, is ideally suited for most orthopedic procedures, and can be attached to a suture anchor or a curved needle.
