A nilmanifold resp. solvmanifold is a compact homogeneous space of a connected and simply-connected nilpotent resp. solvable Lie group by a lattice, i.e. a discrete co-compact subgroup. 
There is an easy criterion for nilpotent Lie groups which enables one to decide whether there is a lattice or not. Moreover, it is easy to decide whether a nilmanifold is formal, Kaehlerian or (Hard) Lefschetz. 
The study of solvmanifolds meets with noticeably greater obstacles than the study of nilmanifolds. Even the construction of solvmanifolds is considerably more difficult than is the case for nilmanifolds. The reason is that there is no simple criterion for the existence of a lattice in a connected and simply-connected solvable Lie group. 
We consider the question of existence of lattices in solvable Lie groups up to dimension six and examine whether the corresponding solvmanifolds are formal, symplectic, Kaehler or (Hard) Lefschetz.

On Low-Dimensional Solvmanifolds

The notions of a twistor space of a contact manifold and a contact connection on such a manifold have been introduced by Vezzoni as extensions of the corresponding notions in the case of a symplectic manifold. Given a contact connection on a contact manifold one can define an almost CR-structure on its twistor space and Vezzoni has found the integrability condition for this structure. In the present paper, it is observed that the CR-structure is induced by an almost contact metric structure. The main goal of the paper is to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for normality of this structure in terms of the curvature of the given contact connection. Illustrating examples are discussed at the end of the paper.

Contact Twistor Spaces and Almost Contact Metric Structures

We study invariant random subgroups (IRSs) of semidirect products G=A⋊Γ. In particular, we characterize all IRSs of parabolic subgroups of SL_d(R), and show that all ergodic IRSs of R^d⋊SL_d(R) are either of the form R^d⋊K for some IRS of SL_d(R), or are induced from IRSs of Λ⋊SL(Λ), where Λ<R^d is a lattice.

Contact twistor spaces and almost contact metric structures

This project serves to analyze the behavior of Ricci Flow in five dimensional manifolds. Ricci Flow was introduced by Richard Hamilton in 1982 and was an essential tool in proving the Geometrization and Poincare Conjectures. In general, Ricci Flow is a nonlinear PDE whose solutions are rather difficult to calculate; however, in a homogeneous manifold, the Ricci Flow reduces to an ODE. The behavior of Ricci Flow in two, three, and four dimensional homogenous manifolds has been calculated and is well understood. The work presented here will describe efforts to better understand the behavior of Ricci Flow in a certain class of five dimensional homogeneous manifolds.

Ricci Flow of Compact Locally Homogeneous Geometries on 5-Manifolds

This paper investigates the geometry of compact contact manifolds that are uniformized by contact Lie groups, i.e., compact manifolds that are the quotient of some Lie group G with a left invariant contact structure and a uniform lattice subgroup. We re-examine Alexander's criteria for existence of lattices on solvable Lie groups and apply them, along with some other well known tools, and use these results to prove that, in dimension 5, there are exactly seven connected and simply connected contact Lie groups with uniform lattices, all of which are solvable. Issues of symplectic boundaries are explored, as well. It is also shown that the special affine group has no uniform lattice.
