This essay examines the ways Teresa Urrea – a curandera or Mexican faith healer – was understood by those she healed as well as the popular presses of the turn of the century as she moved out of the US–Mexico borderlands and into urban centers of San Francisco, New York City, and especially Los Angeles. Santa Teresa’s curanderismo was a cultural refuge for ethnic Mexicans who faced an increasingly racialized and antagonistic public health system in Los Angeles. At the same time, her curanderismo – exemplified by the practice of “laying on hands” – shared epistemologies with scientific medicine and other healing modalities, such as Spiritism, allopathic medicine, and indigenous healing arts. For those who lived in the liminal space between two nations and two cultures, Santa Teresa’s curanderismo provided both practical and magical medicine for the body and spirit.

This inter-disciplinary dissertation utilizes sociological and historical research methods for a critical comparative analysis of the material culture as reproduced through murals and monuments located in two counties in Missouri, Bates County and Cass County. Employing Critical Race Theory as the theoretical framework, each counties’ analysis results are examined. The concepts of race, systemic racism, White privilege and interest-convergence are used to assess both counties continuance of sustaining a racially imbalanced historical narrative. I posit that the construction of history of Bates County and Cass County continues to influence and reinforces systemic racism in the local narrative.

Whitewashing or amnesia: a study of the construction of race in two Midwestern counties

T his past year marked the centennial of the nation's first soil erosion research plots, established in 1917 at the University of Missouri. These first plots were the germ from which modern soil and water conservation work developed. Professor Merritt Finley Miller and his friend Hugh Hammond Bennett were pioneers blazing the way for new work in soil conservation. Miller and other University of Missouri researchers' work with the first erosion plots brought to light that cultivation of sloping land results in large losses of soil and opened a practical way of slowing these losses through cropping methods. Bennett enlarged the work started in Missouri and passionately carried on the story to the American public with a conviction that the assets of a great agricultural nation were rapidly diminishing and would continue to do so if adequate control measures were not initiated (Baver 1939). Studies at the first erosion plots contributed to early arguments in favor of the establishment of the Soil Conservation Service and served as a basis for the development of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). (Ph.D., History) The Emigrant Métis of Kansas: Rethinking the Pioneer Narrative Dissertation directed by Associate Professor Ralph Mann Under the U.S. government’s nineteenth century Indian removal policies, more than ten thousand Eastern Indians, mostly Algonquians from the Great Lakes region, relocated in the 1830s and 1840s beyond the western border of Missouri to what today is the state of Kansas. With them went a number of mixed-race people – the métis, who were born of the fur trade and the interracial unions that it spawned. This dissertation focuses on métis among one emigrant group, the Potawatomi, who removed to a reservation in Kansas that sat directly in the path of the great overland migration to Oregon and California. Utilizing entrepreneurial skills learned in the fur trade, the French-Potawatomi Louis Vieux located his home on the banks of the Red Vermillion, built a bridge, charged overland travelers to cross, and did a side business by offering meals. The métis Louis Ogee established a ferry over the Kansas River, and Madore Beaubien opened a store. Acculturating full-bloods, meanwhile, cut the prairie sod, fenced their fields, domesticated livestock, lived in log cabins, and embraced the Christian faith. Their spatial and temporal location placed these Indians and métis people in the center of momentous historical forces taking place as America moved west, and toward war, in the 1840s and 1850s, while their actions, I suggest, made them “pioneers” no less than the Euro-Americans who followed when Kansas was opened to non-Indian settlement in 1854. For the past fifty years the shell rings of the North American, southeastern, Late Archaic period, have been a continuous object of archaeological research. They have been studied within contexts of the initial creation and use of ceramics in North America, mounding and monumentality of hunter-gatherers, early sedentism and social complexity, forager feasting, ritual, and ceremonialism, and human-environment interactions. The aim of this project was to bring together the cumulative data generated by this continuous research focus and centralize it within a single database, the Late Archaic Shell Rings Repository. In utilizing this consolidated data set, it is possible to track and map, both chronologically and geographically, behavioral traditions surrounding the shell rings. This analysis posits that there are three discernable, overarching, behavioral trajectories within the shell rings of the Late Archaic period: an early, Floridian/Gulf Coastal trajectory of an open ended, large scale, social mounding tradition; a middle Savannah River centered, proto-sedentary, freshwater shell mounding, initial ceramics producing trajectory, the Stallings culture; and a subsequent Atlantic Coastal tradition that possesses a stricter maintenance of social practices that have smaller and more circular shell rings and that incorporates the social behaviors of the shell ring building trajectory and the initial ceramic using trajectory.
