This review will focus on the synthesis, arrangement, structural assembly, for current and future applications, of 1D nanomaterials (tubes, wires, rods) in 2D and 3D ordered arrangements. The ability to synthesize and arrange one dimensional nanomaterials into ordered 2D or 3D micro or macro sized structures is of utmost importance in developing new devices and applications of these materials. Micro and macro sized architectures based on such 1D nanomaterials (e.g. tubes, wires, rods) provide a platform to integrate nanostructures at a larger and thus manageable scale into high performance electronic devices like field effect transistors, as chemo- and biosensors, catalysts, or in energy material applications. Carbon based, metal oxide and metal based 1D arranged materials as well as hybrid or composite 1D materials of the latter provide a broad materials platform, offering a perspective for new entries into fascinating structures and future applications of such assembled architectures. These architectures allow bridging the gap between 1D nanostructures and the micro and macro world and are the basis for an assembly of 1D materials into higher hierarchy domains. This critical review is intended to provide an interesting starting point to view the current state of the art and show perspectives for future developments in this field. The emphasis is on selected nanomaterials and the possibilities for building three dimensional arrays starting from one dimensional building blocks. Carbon nanotubes, metal oxide nanotubes and nanowires (e.g. ZnO, TiO2, V2O5, Cu2O, NiO, Fe2O3), silicon and germanium nanowires, and group III–V or II–VI based 1D semiconductor nanostructures like GaS and GaN, pure metals as well as 1D hybrid materials and their higher organized architectures (foremost in 3D) will be focussed. These materials have been the most intensively studied within the last 5–10 years with respect to nano–micro integration aspects and their functional and application oriented properties. The critical review should be interesting for a broader scientific community (chemists, physicists, material scientists) interested in synthetic and functional material aspects of 1D materials as well as their integration into next higher organized architectures.

Influence of induced magnetic field and heat flux with the suspension of carbon nanotubes for the peristaltic flow in a permeable channel

This work shows evidence of conventional liquid and polymer molecules doping macroscopic yarns made up of carbon nanotubes (CNT), an effect that is exploited to monitor polymer flow and thermoset curing during fabrication of a structural composite by vacuum infusion. The sensing mechanism is based on adsorption of liquid/polymer molecules after infiltration into the porous fibers. These molecules act as dopants that produce large changes in longitudinal fiber resistance, closely related to the low density of carriers near the Fermi level of bulk samples of CNT fibers, reminiscent of their low-dimensional constituents. A 25% decrease in fiber resistance upon exposure to electron–donor radicals formed during epoxy vinyl ester polymerization is shown as an example. At later stages of curing the matrix undergoes shrinkage and applies a compressive stress to the fibers. The resulting sharp increase in electrical resistance provides a mechanism for detection of the matrix gel point. The kinetics of resistance change during polymer ingress are related to established models for macromolecular adsorption, thus also enabling prediction of polymer flow. This is demonstrated for vacuum infusion of a 150 cm2 glass fiber laminate composite, with the CNT fiber yarns giving accurate prediction of macroscopic resin flow according to Darcy's law.

A Composite Fabrication Sensor Based on Electrochemical Doping of Carbon Nanotube Yarns

Creation of large-scale arrays of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with defined orientation and density is of central importance for obtaining functional electronic device structures that incorporate these nanoscaled systems. This manuscript describes how the macroscopic electrical properties of 2D SWNT networks vary controllably with the microscopic alignment individual SWNTs in the network. These studies indicate that "orthogonal" SWNT structures provide enhanced reproducibility and conductivity, when compared to deposits of highly aligned SWNTs. Because this material is composed of a submonolayer coverage of SWNTs, such deposits have applications in flexible and transparent electronic materials.

Macroscopic Electrical Properties of Ordered Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Networks

Nitric acid is a commonly used chemical in preparing and functionalizing carbon nanotube (CNT) networks. It is also used to enhance the conductivity of CNT-based networks or films, which is usually attributed to p-type doping by NO3– ions. We used local electrical characterization methods based on atomic force microscopy to elucidate the effects of nitric acid treatments on sparse and random CNT networks. IV characteristics of CNT network devices before and after nitric acid treatments are obtained along with local electrical characteristics with both scanning gate microscopy and electrostatic force microscopy. Our results show both p-type doping of CNTs and reduction of CNT–CNT junction resistances after nitric acid treatments.

Local Electrical Investigations of Nitric Acid Treatment Effects on Carbon Nanotube Networks

Vertically aligned arrays of ultralong ZnO nanowires were synthesized on SiO2 substrates with carbothermal vapor phase transport method with Au seeding layer. High density of vertically aligned ZnO nanowires with lengths from a few to ∼300 μm could be grown by controlling growth conditions. Supply of high concentration of Zn vapor and control of the ratio between Zn vapor and oxygen are found to have the most significant effects on the growth of long ZnO nanowires in the vapor–solid growth mechanism. The nanowires are of high crystalline quality as confirmed by various structural, compositional, and luminescent measurements. Luminescent and electrical properties of ZnO nanowires with different growth conditions were also investigated.

Synthesis of vertical arrays of ultra long ZnO nanowires on noncrystalline substrates

The apparent field-effect-transistor?(FET)-like operations of a device based on a network of single-walled carbon nanotubes?(SWCNTs) are elucidated with the help of local probe electrical characterization methods using an atomic force microscope. The apparent switching behavior of the device with an on?off ratio>104 is found to be due to just two localized areas in the network of SWCNTs based on the measurements by electrostatic force microscopy and scanning gate microscopy. The result demonstrates that the conductance of a network of SWCNTs can be dominated by localized perturbations.

Characterization of Thermal Behavior of a Silicon PIN Diode Package in a RF Power Limiter

ZnMgO nanowires are synthesized on Si substrates using a vapor-transport method and their structural and luminescent characteristics are investigated using various techniques. The shift of the (002) peak in the X-ray diffraction measurements and the blue shift of the near-band-edge emission peak in the photoluminescence measurements of the ZnMgO samples are consistent with the incorporation of the small amount of Mg (~5 at.%) in ZnO. Individual ZnMgO nanowires are also investigated for their structural and luminescent properties, which show smaller amount of Mg incorporation (~1 at.%) into ZnO nanowires than in the case of ensemble of ZnMgO samples.
