Program evaluation data from school and community applications of a physical fitness drug prevention program is presented. A train-the-trainer methodology was applied to install the program in twenty-two settings within the state of Illinois. The physical training program consisted of exercise and educational modules delivered over a twelve-week time period that focused on learning values and life skills through exercise. Complete pre-post data were obtained on 329 participating youth at six school and community based sites. Significant increases were demonstrated in physical activity and physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility). Youth self-report data indicated significant decreases in risk factors such as low self-concept, poor school attendance, anxiety, depression, and number of friends who use alcohol and drugs. There were significant reductions in the percentage of youth who used cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and alcohol. It was concluded that a strong relationship was demonstrated for increased fitness leading to lowered risk factors and usage patterns. Likewise, the train-the-trainer model was shown to be an effective installation approach to expand fitness programming within prevention settings.

Physical training as a substance abuse prevention intervention for youth.

This study, which was funded by the Australian Sports Commission, identified more than 600 programs for young people in Australia that focused on sport and physical activity. The study conducted a postal survey of these youth programs to identify which program components led to successful interventions to reduce antisocial behaviour by youth, and also undertook case studies of some of the programs. Programs most commonly catered for youth at risk of or involved in drug use and crime (81% of programs), and more than half of all programs surveyed were also open to youth not at risk of antisocial behaviour. This report describes the program conception, delivery methods and intended outcomes of the programs surveyed, and identifies prominent themes for program structuring and development from the case study analysis. The report concludes that a multi agency model and integration with community support services are important for the successful implementation of sport and physical activity programs, and also sets out Good Practice Program Principles for the development of such programs.

Sport, physical activity and antisocial behaviour in youth

While limited research exists on the topic of physical activity as an adjunct to substance abuse treatment, a review of relevant multidisciplinary literature indicates a logical rationale for its potential benefits to recovery from addiction. This article provides an overview of common variables that contribute to addictive disease and summarizes the relationship of regular physical activity to improvements on many of these variables. The stages of change from the Transtheoretical Model (TTM, Prochaska & DiClemente, 1982; Prochaska & Velicer, 1997) are described in the context of effectively matching clients in substance abuse therapy to interventions that may include physical activity. Finally, important practical suggestions for implementing physical activity as a useful adjunct to substance abuse treatment are provided.

Physical Activity as a Helpful Adjunct to Substance Abuse Treatment

This research aims to investigate the feasibility of sport policy in preventing and relieving juvenile delinquency in overseas context and provide policy recommendations to Hong Kong Government. Australia and Singapore were chosen in the research. The research conducted secondary data analysis to examine sport programs in the two countries, and the findings have proved the effectiveness of those programs. A sport policy that applicable to Hong Kong was proposed. Potential limitations of the policy were figured out beforehand. Additionally, possible solutions were suggested to make the policy more practical. The results bring some theoretical and practical implications on juvenile delinquency prevention.

El interes suscitado por el estudio de la actividad y condicion fisicas en el area de las drogodependencias es relativamente reciente. De hecho, existen pocas investigaciones que centren su objeto de estudio en la condicion fisica de los toxicomanos a tratamiento. El objetivo de nuestro articulo sera definir la condicion fisica de las personas adictas a las drogas. La resistencia ha sido la capacidad fisica mas estudiada. Por contra, la fuerza, la velocidad, la flexibilidad y la composicion corporal han sido menos investigadas. Del analisis de las capacidades fisicas se deduce que la condicion fisica de los drogodependientes a tratamiento es inferior a la de la poblacion no consumidora de drogas. En resumen, se constata el estado de precariedad en el que se encuentra la investigacion sobre condicion fisica, subrayando la necesidad de fomentar el trabajo multidisciplinar donde tenga cabida la potencialidad terapeutica y rehabilitadora que proporciona el desarrollo de un programa de actividad fisica adaptado a las caracteristicas particulares de los toxicomanos a tratamiento.
