Satellite communication networks have gradually been recognized as an effective way to enhance the ground-based wireless communication. Considering the weight restriction of payloads, multi-antenna technologies have recently come into use on satellite platforms, and are capable of generating beams flexibly to provide services. To avoid incurring interferences, adjacent beams are designed to take different spectral resources. Unfortunately, this may limit the simultaneously accessed terminals since the spectrum cannot be fully used. In this paper, we propose a spectrum-saving transmission method in a satellite star network, where terminals communicate with each other through the hub station. Taking advantage of the great transmission capability differences of the hub station and terminals, we could allocate them the same spectral resources. Specifically, it is not necessary to use exclusive frequency bands for terminals.The proposed method can play a significant role when large numbers of users need to access the system with limited spectrum resource. To give a deep insight into the spectrum-saving method, the expressions of ergodic sum-rate are provided, and the impact of the number of accessed terminals is further analyzed. Simulation results validate the advantage of the proposed method in terms of bit error rate and ergodic sum rate.

A Spectrum-Saving Transmission Method in Multi-Antenna Satellite Communication Star Networks: Sharing the Frequency with Terminals

An efficient deep learning (DL) architecture for switching prediction in site diversity schemes for Q band (39.402GHz) links is presented. The paper proposes the implementation of a DL detector (D) model in each station, that raises a flag when a rain event occurs, exploiting the benefits of transformer networks. When the event is detected, a DL regressor (R) model is triggered to predict future attenuation values for the specific event in each station. Both detector and regressor models consist of attention mechanisms that identify temporal dependencies between the input sequence elements. The experimental evaluation along with state of the art techniques indicate promising results. 

Site Diversity Switching Prediction AT Q Band Using Deep Learning Techniques in Satellite Communications

The current 5G era has met expectations for high data rates and low latency, yet falls short in delivering resilient and ubiquitous connectivity. The terrestrial 5G technology, while successful in some aspects, faces challenges due to congestion and limited capacity in emerging applications, as well as geographical limitations and poor ROI. To combat these issues, integrating satellite technology into terrestrial networks has emerged as a solution. However, the cooperative utilisation of both networks remains a challenge. Diverse research and standardisation efforts propose solutions, notably leveraging Software-Defined Networking (SDN). This paper reviews existing work in this area and presents conceptual solutions. The proposed concept targets reliable convergence, achieving access network selection and traffic steering for end-to-end data transmission.

Advanced Technologies for a Sustainable Future of Space

In this paper, the design of a Ka-band 512-element transmit switchable circularly polarized planar phased array is presented. To meet with the low cost and low profile characteristics, the stacked patch antenna array printed on the printed circuit board (PCB) with CMOS beamformer chips mounted on the bottom is applied. The stacked patch antenna by coupling feed is utilized to enlarge the operating frequency band. And the antenna is arranged as a 32×16 rectangular grid. There are 128 beamformer chips, a power combiner network, one beam control and power supply unit. The proposed array system is fabricated using a 20-layer PCB board with 3.17 mm thickness, and the measured directivity is larger than 28 dB within the scanning angle.

A 512-Element Polarization-Switchable Ka-Band Transmit Phased Array for SATCOM Application

The next generation of High Throughput Satellite (HTS) will exploit Q/V band for the feeder link and Ka band for the user link. The exploitation of multiple gateways (GWs) is a transmit diversity measure to compensate severe rain attenuation of Q/V band feeder links. This paper introduces a new smart gateway diversity combination scheme that combinates N-active (K = 2) and N + 1 diversity method in detail from the working principle, gateway switching strategy, evaluation of system availability and implementation complexity. In addition, a feeder link outage event prediction algorithm featuring combination scheme is given detailly based on modified time-adaptive linear regression. Compared with the existing N + P scheme, the proposed scheme can provide higher system availability and more stable user's experience under the condition of properly increasing the complexity of payload design. Compared with N-active scheme that has been reported, it is much easier to implement in engineering and more cost-effective. As a result, the combination scheme is a realistic solution based on a trade-off between performance improvement and implementation complexity.

A new multiple gateway transmit diversity technique for future satellite networks

This paper presents two design approaches of a satellite-borne Q/V-band multi-beam phased array antenna. By analyzing the challenges of antenna design in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) satellite communication, an eight-beam integrated subarray antenna is proposed by hybrid brick-tile and tile constructions based on the multi-beam beamformer chip using silicon technology. By simulation and comparison, the tile-construction array design is employed for the large-scale antenna design by advantages of low-profile and flexibility of subarray arrangement. At last, a large-scale array design for satellite-borne application is provided.

A spatiotemporal routing algorithm based on sun outage prediction is proposed to reduce the impact of optical inter-satellite link interruption in deterministic satellite optical networks. Simulations prove that our approach can significantly improve transmission quality.

This paper presents an efficient compensation band limited digital predistortion (CBL-DPD) architecture for the wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter system. Compared with traditional band limited digital predistortion (BL-DPD), the CBL-DPD adds a low pass filter (LPF) and an error compensation term, which has lower complexity and higher precision. Simulation results show that the CBL-DPD can effectively overcome the nonlinearity and memory effect of the wideband power amplifier (PA).
