Security is a main concern in the establishment of tactical MANETs. Literature is abundant in defining protocol extensions to provide more secure MANET communications. Also many techniques have been developed to identify different types of network attacks, such as the wormhole attack, for example. However, all these security solutions are designed for specific routing protocols. In the absence of a generic security architecture, nodes from different MANET domains cannot cooperate and benefit from security advantages across the entire network, such as secured inter-domain routing, etc. In this paper, we present a general architecture for a security trust monitoring layer that runs on top of routing protocols. This security layer can be applied to different MANET routing protocols and provide monitoring of different network attacks by adding specific plug-ins. Our modular security approach allows nodes, running different routing protocols and equipped with different security solutions, to inter-operate by exchanging security information with each other. The idea is to have a security layer monitor MANET communications and construct a trust representation model of member nodes of the MANET. The trust information gathered can be communicated to MANET nodes (upon request), and such nodes can modify their routing tables accordingly. We show that this security architecture can be implemented on a real MANET test bed. As an example of security attack, we also show the integration of wormhole detection and counter-measure with the security trust monitoring layer performed on this same test bed.

A trust-based security architecture for tactical MANETS

Recently, pervasive and ubiquitous computing evolved tremendously and has become an integral part of many fields. This is widely attributed to their efficiency in integrating with everyday components and handling tasks in a faster and better way. As a result, technologies to facilitate their development, integration and security also evolved. Middleware is an essential component in this field and recently more emphasis has been put on security middleware as an enabling component for pervasive and ubiquitous applications. This is due to the high levels of personal and private data sharing in these systems. In this paper we survey some representative security middleware approaches and highlight their various properties and characteristics. We also discuss and compare these approaches in terms of their design, target environments, and main features. The review reveals that several options are available; however, there are still many issues and problems to be addressed to achieve more efficient security middleware.

Through the abolition of maybe used manual solutions, the user gets the benefit of greater potential savings and an enhancement of productivity in invoicing.To build this solution, the components of the BlackBerry platform from the Canadian manufacturer Research In Motion were chosen, which provide an independence of location as well as a very high level of security during the radio transmission. So the whole communication between device and infrastructure is handled encrypted.

Mobile Acquisition of Sales Operations Based on a BlackBerry Infrastructure with Connection to an Inventory and ERP Management System

The article presents the concept of a novel mechanism for information assurance provision in tactical mobile ad-hoc networks that operate in disruptive and hostile environment. The authors provide a brief survey of related work and present their own concept, which include surroundings assessment, nodes behaviour classification, advanced inference method and authentication scheme performed at link layer. The concept was examined by simulation experiments and selected results are provided. The proposed system allows to increase the safety of communications and protect against degradation of MANET network resources.

To guard against malicious attack from mobile middleware, application should incorporate suitable control mechanisms, such as access control, authentication policy etc. Distributed trust management is a flexible way to manage nodes' security control in distributed environments. In this paper, we present the design of a new security mobile middleware which provides support for role-based trust and accountability in distributed mobile environment. The proposed model, founded on delegation certificates, allows the management of trust relations using a role-based trust model RTO. After having introduced the role and policy delegation mechanism, we present the authentication protocol between requester and compliance checker, which essentially unifies remote administration with credential distribution that provides the ability to construct richer security policies and easy to manage distributed middleware mobile communication, authentication and request.
