The present contribution reviews the green lacewing fauna of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands where, to date, 50 species belonging to 13 genera are known to occur. After a diagnosis of the family Chrysopidae, its paleontological history and distribution, as well as some general data on its morphology and biology, juvenile stages and behavior are presented. This general information is followed by a brief history of studies on the family, and particularly those on the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Some corrections are reported for earlier publications dates that have undergone taxonomical changes. Thus, Rexa almerai (Navas, 1919) n. comb. is proposed as junior synonym of Rexa lordina Navas, 1920 n. syn.; and is included in the list of chrysopid species belonging to the fauna of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. A key for identifying imagoes of the subfamilies, genera, and species recorded from the region and a generic level key for the larvae are presented. For these species all existing bibliographic references since 1972, are compiled and annotated, both the currently accepted names, their synonyms and/or any other nomenclatural combinations under which they have been recorded. New information is presented on the external and/or genital morphology of most species, and detailed information is compiled on the presently known general distribution of each species with new data (299 new specimens of 25 species). Moreover, the variability, juvenile stages, biology, phenology, and altitudinal and geographic distribution of species from the Peninsula and Balearic Archipelago are assessed on the basis of 20.667 studied specimens.

New data on the morphology, distribution and biology of five species of green-lacewings (Insecta, Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) collected from samplings made in Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and Coquimbo (Argentina, Chile) are given. The general morphology and the preimaginal stages of Ungla argentina (Navas, 1911), Ungla binaria (Navas, 1922) and Chrysopodes (Neosuarius) porterina (Navas, 1910) are described. This last species and Chrysoperla defreitasi Brooks, 1994 are recorded from Argentina for the first time.

Revision of the Neotropical green lacewing genus Ungla (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae)

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama is considered the most important pest of citrus since it transmits the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter spp., causing the death of millions of citrus trees all over the world. This research studied the ability of Ceraeochrysa valida (Banks) as a biological control agent against D. citri. The study was conducted under field and laboratory conditions, considering four different criteria: 1) distribution and presence of C. valida in lemon orchards in the state of Colima, 2) maximum predation of C. valida on D. citri nymphs under laboratory conditions, 3) life tables of D. citri with release of C. valida under field conditions, and 4) predation of C. valida on D. citri in the field. The results showed that Ceraeochrysa valida was present in the orchards evaluated throughout the year. The average amount of D. citri nymphs consumed by C. valida under laboratory condition was 258.26 ± 3.80. The release of 20 larvae of C. valida in the field produced an average mortality of 160.29 ± 26.32 nymphs of D. citri against 27.33 ± 3.39 without release (F = 11.98, Pr > F = 0.0134). The analysis of life tables for the months of December, January, February and March showed that egg and nymph mortality was higher in treatments in which C. valida was released (0.9768; 0.8482; 1; 0.9922) compared to those in which no release occurred (0.8481; 0.4467; 1; 0.8032). Ro reached values lower than one under release treatments (0.1628; 0.5893; 0.000; 0.4870), while these were close to or higher than one (0.7278; 1.1733; 0.1231; 1.0787) in the treatments without release. It can be concluded that C. valid can be considered as a biological control agent against D. citri.

This work evaluated, under controlled conditions, the predatory capacity and the intraguild predation of Ceraeochrysa valida and Chrysoperla externa, with Diaphorina citri as prey. Statistical analysis indicates an asymmetric intraguild predation in favor of Ch. externa when prey density is low. There were no statistical differences in the predation of D. citri between both chrysopids when preying upon D. citri individually or in combination. It is concluded that the intraguild predation in favor of Ch. externa over Ce. valida depends on the density of the prey, and that the population of D. citri can be decreased by effect of a single chrysopid species.

Interaction between Ceraeochrysa valida and Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), Natural Enemies of Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae)

The author has had the opportunity to study some type specimens of species of the genus Chrysopa Leach, I8I5. The species in question were mostly described in a way that does not allow sure identification. Redescriptions have therefore been prepared, when necessary, and lectotypes have been selected in cases when the descriptions were based on more than one single specimen. Some cases of new synonymy have been discovered.
