Due to the selective attenuation of light in water, captured underwater images exhibit poor visibility and cause considerable challenges for vision tasks. The structural and statistical properties of different regions of degraded underwater images are damaged at different levels, resulting in a global nonuniform drift of the feature representation, causing further degradation of visual performance. To handle these issues, we present an underwater image enhancement method via multi-interval subhistogram perspective equalization to address the issues posed by underwater images. We estimate the degree of feature drifts in each area of an image by extracting the statistical characteristics of the image, using this information to guide feature enhancement to achieve adaptive feature enhancement, thereby improving the visual effect of degraded images. We first design a variational model that uses the difference between data items and regular items to improve the color correction performance of the method based on subinterval linear transformation. In addition, a multithreshold selection method, which adaptively selects a threshold array for interval division, is developed. Ultimately, a multi-interval subhistogram equalization method, which performs histogram equalization in each subhistogram to improve the image contrast, is presented. Experiments on underwater images with various scenarios demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms many state-of-the-art methods qualitatively and quantitatively.

A deep journey into image enhancement: A survey of current and emerging trends

Underwater object detection is a key technology in the development of intelligent underwater vehicles. Object detection faces unique challenges in underwater applications: blurry underwater images; small and dense targets; and limited computational capacity available on the deployed platforms. To improve the performance of underwater object detection, we proposed a new object detection approach that combines a new detection neural network called TC-YOLO, an image enhancement technique using an adaptive histogram equalization algorithm, and the optimal transport scheme for label assignment. The proposed TC-YOLO network was developed based on YOLOv5s. Transformer self-attention and coordinate attention were adopted in the backbone and neck of the new network, respectively, to enhance feature extraction for underwater objects. The application of optimal transport label assignment enables a significant reduction in the number of fuzzy boxes and improves the utilization of training data. Our tests using the RUIE2020 dataset and ablation experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach performs better than the original YOLOv5s and other similar networks for underwater object detection tasks; moreover, the size and computational cost of the proposed model remain small for underwater mobile applications.

Underwater Object Detection Using TC-YOLO with Attention Mechanisms

We observe that a natural image tends to exhibit similar histograms for color channels in the RGB color space and consistent statistical estimates for color channels in the Lab color space. We refer to these observations as natural color consistencies. In contrast, we discover that an underwater image does not always follow the natural color consistencies. Different color channels in an underwater image tend to give rise to very different distributions, regardless of whether the channels are in the RGB color space or Lab color space. We refer to these observations as underwater color disparities. To enhance an underwater image to make it appear more natural, it is necessary to correct its underwater color disparities to align with the natural color consistencies. To this end, we develop an adaptive attenuated channel compensation method based on optimal channel precorrection and a salient absorption map-guided fusion method for eliminating the color deviation in the RGB color space. We then develop a method to enhance the contrast of channel L and an adaptive color distribution specification method for improving the contrast and matching the color distribution in the Lab color space. Additionally, we develop an edge-enhanced mask fusion method for correcting blurry details. Our method is not a deep learning method but can effectively be applied to a single underwater image. The qualitative and quantitative empirical results validate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art underwater image enhancement methods. Underwater Color Disparities: Cues for Enhancing Underwater Images toward Natural Color Consistencies

Hierarchical attention aggregation with multi-resolution feature learning for GAN-based underwater image enhancement

Underwater images captured by optical cameras can be degraded by light attenuation and scattering, which leads to deteriorated visual image quality. The technique of underwater image enhancement plays an important role in a wide range of subsequent applications such as image segmentation and object detection. To address this issue, we propose an underwater image enhancement framework which consists of an adaptive color restoration module and a haze-line based dehazing module. First, we employ an adaptive color restoration method to compensate the deteriorated color channels and restore the colors. The color restoration module consists of three steps: background light estimation, color recognition, and color compensation. The background light estimation determines the image is blueish or greenish, and the compensation is applied in red-green or red-blue channels. Second, the haze-line technique is employed to remove the haze and enhance the image details. Experimental results show that the proposed method can restore the color and remove the haze at the same time, and it also outperforms several state-of-the-art methods on three publicly available datasets. Moreover, experiments on an underwater object detection dataset show that the proposed underwater image enhancement method is able to improve the accuracy of the subsequent underwater object detection framework.

Underwater image enhancement using adaptive color restoration and dehazing.

Infrared dim and small target detection is a key technology for various detection tasks. However, due to the lack of shape, texture, and other information, it is a challenging task to detect dim and small targets. Recently, since many traditional algorithms ignore the global information of infrared images, they generate some false alarms in complicated environments. To address this problem, in this paper, a coarse-to-fine deep learning-based method was proposed to detect dim and small targets. Firstly, a coarse-to-fine detection framework integrating deep learning and background prediction was applied for detecting targets. The framework contains a coarse detection module and a fine detection module. In the coarse detection stage, Region Proposal Network (RPN) is employed to generate masks in target candidate regions. Then, to further optimize the result, inpainting is utilized to predict the background using the global semantics of images. In this paper, an inpainting algorithm with a mask-aware dynamic filtering module was incorporated into the fine detection stage to estimate the background of the candidate targets. Finally, compared with existing algorithms, the experimental results indicate that the proposed framework has effective detection capability and robustness for complex surroundings. 

Infrared Dim and Small Target Detection Based on Background Prediction

Sonar image segmentation is critical for improving the recognition and detection of underwater targets, particularly in complex environments. Although deep learning has shown promising results in image segmentation using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), obtaining an accurate boundary of the target remains a challenge as a result of the partial loss of details during down-sampling. In this paper, a novel improved model is proposed that incorporates an edge detection structure into the CNN architecture. The edge features are aggregated with class-specific semantic features extracted from deep networks through a channel attention mechanism, which further refines the fine segmentation of object boundaries. The experimental results demonstrate that our improved Deeplabv3+ algorithm achieves better performance in side-scan sonar image segmentation compared to other methods, highlighting its potential for improving the recognition and detection of underwater targets.
