 Introduction Multiple factors influence the most important decision of choosing a branch of education and future career. Choice of Dentistry as a career option follows the Medicine stream. Dentistry is witnessing a phase of turmoil due to several factors, making it more necessary to have a post graduate degree. It is noted that in the recent years that the students opt for clinical branches of Dentistry rather than non-clinical branches, of which Oral Medicine and Radiology (OMR) is considered by many, which is opted as the last resort due to several factors. Hence, we decided to explore the reasons for the fall in admissions in the OMR faculty for postgraduation through a questionnaire and consider the modifications which can be implemented to improvise the situation,  Aim and Objectives  To assess the attitude of IV B.D.S. and intern students from a Dental College in Western Maharashtra towards pursuing post graduate course in Oral Medicine and Radiology  To evaluate the reasons for declining rates of admission in post graduate course in Oral Medicine and Radiology  To recommend corrective actions for provoking admissions in post graduate course in Oral Medicine and Radiology  To make students aware of the scope of post graduate course in Oral Medicine and Radiology.  Study It is a Qualitative and Quantitative type of Questionnaire based study  Material and method The interns and IV BDS students of a Dental College in Western Maharashtra from the academic year 2017-18 were sensitized with a peer reviewed 10 mins presentation on the scope of OMR. They were given a semi-structured, peer reviewed, selfadministered printed questionnaire. The data was statistically analyzed using SSPS software.  Results 41.2 % had planned to pursue post graduate course in Oral Surgery whereas 2.4 % in OMR, out of the 85 participants. This difference was statistically significant (p<0.05).  Conclusion Lack of lucrative benefits make OMR as a nonfavorite subject. Certain recommendations are made in this article to improve the state of OMR subject.

To Study the Attitude of IV B.D.S. and Intern Students from a Dental College in Western Maharashtra Towards Pursuing Post Graduate Course in Oral Medicine and Radiology

Original Research Article Objective: To assess the drivers behind choice of dental career, student expectations regarding dental career, estimate the prevalence of burnout during the early stages of career and studentship among currently studying and newly graduated general dental practitioners of Kerala using simple questionnaires. Methods: A Cross sectional study was conducted with the study sample being derived from a group of students from the third year, final year, interns and a few clinicians who have completed their course no lesser than 2 years prior. This study exempts the first year and second year group of students. The data for this study was collected using questionnaire schedules using a descriptive survey design with 713 students, over the time period of 45 days at various colleges in and around Kothamangalam, Kerala. The questionnaire was designed such that it includes 18 questions regarding the influences for choice, attitude and expectations regarding one‟s career. Results: Among the 713 students,, interns and practitioners surveyed 32% individuals opted for dentistry out of their own personal interests while 40%, chose dentistry due to inability to procure a medical seat. A majority of the participants (75%, n=534) have shown to have future plans regarding their careers of which 331 (62%) would like to pursue postgraduation or overseas education programs; pursuing endodontics 109 (33%), orthodontics 76 (23%), pedodontics 56 (17%) being the more popular choices. The remainder of those not intending to pursue a postgraduation (n=112, 21%) would opt for a general practice. Around 371 (52%) mention change in expectations over the years regarding their career choice and potential outcomes. Following completion of three years under the undergraduate programme a significant n=285 (40%) opted „yes‟ for a career change at this point while the remainder (n=428, 60%) chose to stay on the same track. Their reasons for opting for a change include „interest in another subject‟ (n=199, 28%), „Lack of income generated‟ (n=36, 5%), and other reasons (n=93, 13%). Over 50% did not attempt the question, implying that they were not able to decide their choice yet. Conclusion: This study revealed a rather positive attitude of students towards future career planning and choice with the majority of the group wanting to pursue higher education or working/learning under a clinical setup. The minority of who have decided to opt out was mainly due to lack of interest & funds.

Choice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as a Specialization and Career Path: An Undergraduate Perspective

Context: Public Health Dentistry, a unique specialty, which focuses on oral health issues in communities rather than in individual patients. Among the various disciplines of dentistry, it is unfortunate that though Public Health Dentistry forms the basis of dental health care services and holds the key for developing awareness about the social aspects of the profession, it is often given less priority by the students as a choice for postgraduate training.Aims: To explore the attitude of dental undergraduate students towards Public Health Dentistry as their career choice.Methods and Material: A cross sectional questionnaire survey was done among 103 interns of Davangere city. Data regarding their attitude was collected using a Questionnaire.Statistical analysis used: Descriptive data was generated in percentages and tables and graphs were used to describe the data and chi-square test to assess categorical data.Results: Majority of the participants were females (61.2%) and had joined Dentistry by chance (45.6%. Oral surgery was more preferred (30.2%) followed by Conservative dentistry (24.2%). The participants found Public Health Dentistry subject to be good (66.0%) but were undecided to choose as their careers (52.4%). They agreed that this subject offered easy employment (34.0%), was essential for increasing awareness about oral health in society (51.5%), gave a chance to be a good academician (63.1%) and offered opportunities abroad (49.5%).Conclusions: The participants found that the subject to be interesting and were also agreed on the different aspects of this subject. Efforts to increase awareness among undergraduates should be considered.

Career Preferences after Graduation Among Dental Students in a Teaching Hospital in Nepal

Introduction: The choice of career is one of the most important decisions in one's life. However, the choice of dentistry becomes forceful at times by peer pressure, cultural thrust or inability to procure medicine. The dental students may be discontented with the profession or income in the present scenario due to the growing competition. The aim of the present survey is to assess the various careers perspectives opted by Indian dentists post under-graduation. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive survey. A customized questionnaire was administered to the study group of 500 dentists regarding the reasons for choice of dental course, career options, obstacles faced post-completion of under-graduation, satisfaction with current profession, income and clinical practice. Results: Data were analyzed using counts and percentages. The study constituted of 49% male and 51% female participants. The most popular reasons for choosing dentistry were inability to get medical seat as well as out of own interest and family pressure. The participants planned to do post-graduation (41%) or work at private clinic (22%) after graduation. Most of the dentists 430 (90%) reported being satisfied with their profession while only 136 (28%) were satisfied with their income. 26% of the participants wanted to quit dentistry. Conclusions: The need for the hour is to uplift the quality of dental profession in India by increasing the number of post graduate seats in proportion to the undergraduate seats, to increase the income, job opportunities and status of the dental professionals in par with medical professionals.
