Waste fly ash, with both low (with the addition of vermiculite) and high contents of unburned coal, were subjected to hydrothermal syntheses aiming to obtain zeolite composite materials—zeolite + vermiculite (NaX–Ver) and zeolite + unburned carbon (NaX–C). The composites were compared with parent zeolite obtained from waste fly ash with a low content of unburned carbon (NaX–FA). In this study, the physicochemical characteristics of the obtained materials were evaluated. The potential application of the investigated zeolites for the adsorption of ammonium ions from aqueous solutions was determined. Composite NaX–Ver and parent zeolite NaX–FA were characterized by comparable adsorption capacities toward ammonium ions of 38.46 and 40.00 mg (NH4+) g−1, respectively. The nearly 2-fold lower adsorption capacity of composite NaX–C (21.05 mg (NH4+) g−1) was probably a result of the lower availability of ion exchange sites within the material. Adsorbents were also regenerated using 1 M NaCl solution at a pH of 10 and subjected to 3 cycles of adsorption–desorption experiments, which proved only a small reduction in adsorption properties. This study follows the current trend of waste utilization (fly ash) and the removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions with respect to their reuse, which remains in line with the goals of the circular economy.

Zeolite Composite Materials from Fly Ash: An Assessment of Physicochemical and Adsorption Properties

Increasing world population, urbanization, and industrialization have led to an increase in demand in production and consumption, resulting in an increase in industrial solid wastes and pollutant levels in water. These two main consequences have become global problems. The high Si and Al content of solid wastes suggests that they can be used as raw materials for the synthesis of zeolites. In this context, when the literature studies conducted to obtain synthetic zeolites are evaluated, it is seen that hydrothermal synthesis method is generally used. In order to improve the performance of the hydrothermal synthesis method in terms of energy cost, synthesis time, and even product quality, additional methods such as alkaline fusion, ultrasonic effect, and microwave support have been developed. The zeolites synthesized by different techniques exhibit superior properties such as high surface area and well-defined pore sizes, thermal stability, high cation exchange capacity, high regeneration ability, and catalytic activity. Due to these specific properties, zeolites are recognized as one of the most effective methods for the removal of pollutants. The toxic properties of heavy metals and dyes in water and their carcinogenic effects in long-term exposure pose a serious risk to living organisms. Therefore, they should be treated at specified levels before discharge to the environment. In this review study, processes including different methods developed for the production of zeolites from industrial solid wastes were evaluated. Synthesis of zeolite from industrial wastes: a review on characterization and heavy metal and dye removal

The development of novel eco-friendly materials like chitosan for food storage and preservation has become crucial in eliminating plastic packaging and minimizing waste. In this work, cinnamaldehyde has been encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles and subsequently incorporated into a 2 % chitosan film. The obtained nanoparticles achieved an average radius size of 89.80 nm, PDI of 0.40, and spherical morphology determined by SEM. Cinnamaldehyde was encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles achieving values of encapsulation close to 7 %, showing a biphasic release profile with sustained release during 5 days. Films with an average thickness of 0.124 mm and elongation at break of 63.66 % to 76.50 % were obtained. Finally, the antimicrobial properties of the films was tested showing reduction values in total aerobic value of 4.85 log cfu/g, total coliform of 1.26 log cfu/g and grow potential value of < 0.5 log10 for Listeria monocitogenes over 20 days. 

Polysaccharide film containing cinnamaldehyde-chitosan nanoparticles, a new eco-packaging material effective in meat preservation

The ecological restoration of rare earth mines and the management of rare earth tailings have consistently posed global challenges, constraining the development of the rare earth industry. In this study, Zeolite A is efficiently prepared from the tailings of an ion-type rare earth mine in the southern Jiangxi Province of China. The resulting Zeolite A boasts exceptional qualities, including high crystallinity, a substantial specific surface area, and robust thermal stability. The optimum conditions for Zeolite synthesis are experimental determination and the adsorption properties of Zeolite A for typical pollutants (Cd2+, Cu2+, NH4+, PO43- and F-) in rare earth mines. The synthesised Zeolite A material is found to have strong adsorption properties. The adsorption mechanism is mainly cation exchange, and the priority of adsorption of pollutants is Cu2+> Cd2+ > NH4+ > PO43- > F-. Notably, the sodium Zeolite A material synthesized at room temperature can be effectively recycled multiple times. In summary, we propose a method to synthesise low cost and high adsorption zeolites using rare earth tailings. This will facilitate the reduction of rare earth tailings and the rehabilitation of rare earth mines. Our method has great potential as a rehabilitation technology for rare earth mines. 

Synthesis of high-crystallinity Zeolite A from rare earth tailings: Investigating adsorption performance on typical pollutants in rare earth mines.

The rising prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria underscores the need to search for innovative and nature-based solutions. One of the approaches may be the use of plants that constitute a rich source of miscellaneous compounds with a wide range of biological properties. This review explores the antimicrobial activity of seven bioactives and their possible molecular mechanisms of action. Special attention was focused on the antibacterial properties of berberine, catechin, chelerythrine, cinnamaldehyde, ellagic acid, proanthocyanidin, and sanguinarine against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The growing interest in novel therapeutic strategies based on new plant-derived formulations was confirmed by the growing number of articles. Natural products are one of the most promising and intensively examined agents to combat the consequences of the overuse and misuse of classical antibiotics.

Bioactive Compounds from Plant Origin as Natural Antimicrobial Agents for the Treatment of Wound Infections

Food contamination caused by food-spoilage bacteria and pathogenic bacteria seriously affects public health. Staphylococcus aureus is a typical foodborne pathogen which easily forms biofilm. Once biofilm is formed, it is difficult to remove. The use of nanotechnology for antibiofilm purposes is becoming more widespread because of its ability to increase the bioavailability and biosorption of many drugs. In this work, chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) were prepared by the ion–gel method with polyanionic sodium triphosphate (TPP). Cinnamaldehyde (CA) was loaded onto the CSNPs. The particle size, potential, morphology, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release behavior of cinnamaldehyde–chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP-CAs) were studied, and the activity of CA against S. aureus biofilms was evaluated. The biofilm structure on the silicone surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to detect live/dead organisms within biofilms. The results showed that CSNP-CAs were dispersed in a circle with an average diameter of 298.1 nm and a zeta potential of +38.73 mV. The encapsulation efficiency of cinnamaldehyde (CA) reached 39.7%. In vitro release studies have shown that CA can be continuously released from the CSNPs. Compared with free drugs, CSNP-CAs have a higher efficacy in removing S. aureus biofilm, and the eradication rate of biofilm can reach 61%. The antibiofilm effects of CSNP-CAs are determined by their antibacterial properties. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CA is 1.25 mg/mL; at this concentration the bacterial cell wall ruptures and the permeability of the cell membrane increases, which leads to leakage of the contents. At the same time, we verified that the MIC of CSNP-CAs is 2.5 mg/mL (drug concentration). The synergy between CA and CSNPs demonstrates the combinatorial application of a composite as an efficient novel therapeutic agent against antibiofilm. We can apply it in food preservation and other contexts, providing new ideas for food preservation.

Antibiofilm Effect of Cinnamaldehyde-Chitosan Nanoparticles against the Biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus

Eutrophication of water bodies due to excess ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) is harmful to aquatic organisms and human health. In this study, foundry dust (FD) from foundry industry was used to synthesize NaA zeolite to use as an adsorbent to remove NH4+-N from wastewater. Results demonstrate that FD could be successfully synthesized to form a foundry dust-based NaA zeolite (FZA) through adjustment of the silica-alumina ratio of n (SiO2)/n (Al2O3) at 2 at 95 °C. Specific surface area, total pore volume, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), and maximum adsorption NH4+-N of FZA was respectively 43.185 cm2/g, 0.0364 cm3/g, 212.35 mmol/100 g and 37.81 mg/g, which was 4.74, 1.54, 1.52 and 1.62 times as much as the NaA zeolite (SZA). FZA with higher adsorption NH4+-N capacity was related to higher specific surface area and CEC. The NH4+-N adsorption amount of 28.57 mg/g by FZA was obtained after the fourth regeneration, which was notably higher than that of SZA (23.27 mg/g). The desorption rate of NH4+-N from FZA was 87% by the fourth regeneration. FZA effectively removed NH4+-N from swine wastewater containing 153.32 mg/L NH4+-N. Results suggest that FZA could be used as absorbent to removal NH4+-N from wastewater.
