Arbutin is a compound of hydroquinone and D-glucose, and it has been over 30 years since there have been serious studies on the skin lightening action of this substance. In the meantime, there have been debates and validation studies about the mechanism of action of this substance as well as its skin lightening efficacy and safety. Several analogs or derivatives of arbutin have been developed and studied for their melanin synthesis inhibitory action. Formulations have been developed to improve the stability, transdermal delivery, and release of arbutin, and device usage to promote skin absorption has been developed. Substances that inhibit melanin synthesis synergistically with arbutin have been explored. The skin lightening efficacy of arbutin alone or in combination with other active ingredients has been clinically evaluated. Combined therapy with arbutin and laser could give enhanced depigmenting efficacy. The use of arbutin causes dermatitis rarely, and caution is recommended for the use of arbutin-containing products, especially from the viewpoint that hydroquinone may be generated during product use. Studies on the antioxidant properties of arbutin are emerging, and these antioxidant properties are proposed to contribute to the skin depigmenting action of arbutin. It is hoped that this review will help to understand the pros and cons of arbutin as a cosmetic ingredient, and will lead to future research directions for developing advanced skin lightening and protecting cosmetic products.

Arbutin as a Skin Depigmenting Agent with Antimelanogenic and Antioxidant Properties.

Allelopathy is expressed through the release of plant chemicals and is considered a natural alternative for sustainable weed management. Artemisia argyi (A. argyi) is widely distributed throughout Asia, and often dominates fields due to its strong allelopathy. However, the mechanism of A. argyi allelopathy is largely unknown and need to be elucidated at the physiological and molecular levels.In this study, we used electron microscopy, ionomics analysis, phytohormone profiling, and transcriptome analysis to investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of A. argyi allelopathy using the model plant rice (Oryza sativa) as receptor plants. A. argyi water extract (AAWE)-treated rice plants grow poorly and display root morphological anomalies and leaf yellowing. We found that AAWE significantly inhibits rice growth by destroying the root and leaf system in multiple ways, including the integrity of ultrastructure, reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis, and the accumulation of soluble sugar and chlorophyll synthesis. Further detection of the hormone contents suggests that AAWE leads to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) accumulation in roots. Moreover, ionomics analysis shows that AAWE inhibits the absorption and transportation of photosynthesis-essential mineral elements, especially Mg, Fe, and Mn. In addition, the results of transcriptome analysis revealed that AAWE affects a series of crucial primary metabolic processes comprising photosynthesis in rice plants.This study indicates that A. argyi realizes its strongly allelopathy through comprehensive effects on recipient plants including large-scale IAA synthesis and accumulation, ROS explosion, damaging the membrane system and organelles, and obstructing ion absorption and transport, photosynthesis and other pivotal primary metabolic processes of plants. Therefore, AAWE could potentially be developed as an environmentally friendly botanical herbicide due to its strong allelopathic effects.

Artemisia argyi allelopathy: a generalist compromises hormone balance, element absorption, and photosynthesis of receptor plants

The current review is based on the advancements in the field of natural therapeutic agents which could be utilized for a variety of biomedical applications and against various diseases and ailments. In addition, several obstacles have to be circumvented to achieve the desired therapeutic effectiveness, among which limited dissolution and/or solubility and permeability are included. To counteract these issues, several advancements in the field of natural therapeutic substances needed to be addressed. Therefore, in this review, the possible techniques for the dissolution/solubility and permeability improvements have been addressed which could enhance the dissolution and permeability up to several times. In addition, the conventional and modern isolation and purification techniques have been emphasized to achieve the isolation and purification of single or multiple therapeutic constituents with convenience and smarter approaches. Moreover, a brief overview of advanced natural compounds with multiple therapeutic effectiveness have also been anticipated. In brief, enough advancements have been carried out to achieve safe, effective and economic use of natural medicinal agents with improved stability, handling and storage.

Technologies for Solubility, Dissolution and Permeation Enhancement of Natural Compounds

Early brain injury (EBI) is associated with the adverse prognosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. The key bioactive component of the Chinese herbal medicine Artemisia asiatica Nakai (Asteraceae) is eupatilin. Recent research reports that eupatilin suppresses inflammatory responses induced by intracranial hemorrhage. This work is performed to validate whether eupatilin can attenuate EBI and deciphers its mechanism. A SAH rat model was established by intravascular perforation in vivo. At 6 h after SAH in rats, 10 mg/kg eupatilin was injected into the rats via the caudal vein. A Sham group was set as the control. In vitro, BV2 microglia was treated with 10 μM Oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb) for 24 h, followed by 50 μM eupatilin treatment for 24 h. The SAH grade, brain water content, neurological score, and blood‐brain barrier (BBB) permeability of the rats were measured 24 h later. The content of proinflammatory factors was detected via enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Western blot analysis was conducted to analyze the expression levels of TLR4/MyD88/NF‐κB pathway‐associated proteins. In vivo, eupatilin administration alleviated neurological injury, and decreased brain edema and BBB injury after SAH in rats. Eupatilin markedly reduced the levels of interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), IL‐6, and tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), and suppressed the expression levels of MyD88, TLR4, and p‐NF‐κB p65 in the SAH rats' cerebral tissues. Eupatilin treatment also reduced the levels of IL‐1β, IL‐6, and TNF‐α, and repressed the expression levels of MyD88, TLR4, and p‐NF‐κB p65 in OxyHb‐induced BV2 microglia. Additionally, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate or resatorvid enhanced the suppressive effects of eupatilin on OxyHb‐induced inflammatory responses in BV2 microglia. Eupatilin ameliorates SAH‐induced EBI via modulating the TLR4/MyD88/NF‐κB pathway in rat model.

Landslides are the most common natural hazards and can cause casualties and damage forests, roads, water conservancy, hydropower, and other infrastructure. Road networks are essential components of critical infrastructure networks. Damage from natural disasters significantly impact the production and life in the region. It is important to evaluate the risk of road networks under landslides. In this paper, we investigate the risk of road networks under the influence of landslides in six counties adjacent to Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province by considering landslide susceptibility and road vulnerability. First, according to the characteristics of the study area, six evaluation indicators were selected for landslide susceptibility and road network vulnerability. Second, the combination weighting method is used to assign the weight of each evaluation index. Finally, the risk analysis results combining landslide susceptibility and road network vulnerability are obtained using the landslide risk formula. The research work presented in this paper can help reduce the property loss caused by landslides and realize the timely identification and protection of high-risk road sections. 

Risk analysis of road networks under the influence of landslides by considering landslide susceptibility and road vulnerability: A case study

Optical tweezers can manipulate tiny particles. However, the distortion caused by the scattering medium restricts the applications of optical tweezers. Wavefront shaping techniques including the transmission matrix (TM) method are powerful tools to achieve light focusing behind the scattering medium. In this paper, we propose a new kind of TM, named intensity transmission matrix (ITM). Only relying on the intensity distribution, we can calculate the ITM with only about 1/4 measurement time of the widely used four-phase method. Meanwhile, ITM method can avoid the energy loss in diffraction introduced by holographic modulation. Based on the ITM, we have implemented particle manipulation with a high degree of freedom on single and multiple particles. In addition, the manipulation range is enlarged over twenty times (compared with the memory effect) to 200 μm.

Total probabilistic measure for the potential risk of regional roads exposed to landslides

Introduction: Melanin is synthesized by melanocytes, which are located in the basal layer of the skin. After synthesis, melanin is further deposited on the surface of the skin to form black spots or chloasma. Tyrosinase is a rate-limiting enzyme that plays an important role in melanogenesis. Currently, there are many drugs that inhibit tyrosinase expression to further reduce melanogenesis. Nevertheless, some of these could reverse the pharmacological effect of other drugs, when used simultaneously. Materials and Methods: B16 mouse melanoma cells were treated with the tyrosinase inhibitors licochalcone A and β-arbutin, alone or in combination with capsaicin, an alkaloid found in peppers. Cytotoxicity, melanin content, and tyrosinase activity and expression were determined. Results: Licochalcone A/β-arbutin inhibited tyrosinase expression and further hindered melanin synthesis when applied individually to B16 mouse melanoma cells. However, licochalcone A/β-arbutin combined with 50 μmol/L capsaicin enhanced the expression of tyrosinase in these cells and further increased melanin content.
