A review of research from organizational behavior supported the guidelines by corporate planners: that is, use an explicit approach for setting objectives, generating strategies, evaluating strategies, monitoring results, and obtaining commitment. To determine whether these findings could be applied to strategic decision making in organizations, a review was made of all published field research on the evaluation of formal planning. Formal planning was superior in 10 of the 15 comparisons drawn from 12 studies, while informal planning was superior in only two comparisons. Although this research did not provide sufficient information on the use of various aspects of the planning process, mild support was provided for having participation by stakeholders. Formal planning tended to be more useful where large changes were involved, but, beyond that, little information was available to suggest when formal planning is most valuable. Future research should assess the formal planning process, the situation in which it is used, and its effects on the total system.

Corporate Strategic Planning (CSP) reports on an important study of planning practices and the value of those practices. Though it is a long book, nearly 500 pages, one can get almost the full benefit by reading about 200 pages. In fact, CSP contains an excellent summary (Chapter 11) that is only 33 pages; this chapter should be sufficient for most readers. My review assesses what the book has to offer and provides a guide to the potential reader.

Review of Corporate Strategic Planning

The purpose of this paper is to explore the intellectual core of electronic commerce (e-commerce) research. Data was collected from the top six e-commerce journals (Lowry, Romans, & Curtis, 2004), the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, MIS Quarterly, Electronic Market, Journal of MIS, Information Systems Research, Management Sciences from 2006-2010. A total of 1056 electronic commerce related articles and 33036 references were identified. There were 47 high value research articles identified using a citation and co-citation analysis. Using factor analysis we identified five research areas: trust, technology acceptance and technology application, e-commerce task-related application, e-markets, and information systems success. The findings of this study provide core knowledge and directions for researchers and practitioners interested in the electronic commerce field.
