We study the impact of different galaxy statistics and empirical metallicity scaling relations on the merging rates and on the properties of compact objects binaries. First, we analyze the similarities and differences of using the star formation rate functions or the stellar mass functions as galaxy statistics for the computation of the cosmic star formation rate density. Then we investigate the effects of adopting the Fundamental Metallicity Relation or a classic Mass Metallicity Relation to assign metallicity to galaxies with given properties. We find that when the Fundamental Metallicity Relation is exploited, the bulk of the star formation occurs at relatively high metallicities even at high redshift; the opposite holds when the Mass Metallicity Relation is employed, since in this case the metallicity at which most of the star formation takes place strongly decreases with redshift. We discuss the various reasons and possible biases originating this discrepancy. Finally, we show the impact that these different astrophysical prescriptions have on the merging rates and on the properties of compact objects binaries; specifically, we present results for the redshift dependent merging rates and for the chirp mass and time delay distributions of the merging binaries.

We propose a perturbative method to compute the deflection angle of both null and massive particles for source and detector at finite distance. This method applies universally to the motion of particles with general velocity in the equatorial plane of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes or static spherical symmetric spacetimes that are asymptotically flat. The resultant deflection angle automatically arranges into a quasi-inverse series form of the impact parameter, with coefficients depending on the metric functions, the signal velocity and the source and detector locations through the apparent angles. In the large impact parameter limit, the series coefficients are reduced to rational functions of sine/cosine functions of the zeroth order apparent angle.

Perturbative deflection angle for signal with finite distance and general velocities


 Strong gravitational lensing effect is a powerful tool to probe cosmological models and gravity theories. Recently, the time-delay cosmography from strong lensing and the stellar kinematics of the deflector, which encode the Hubble constant and the post-Newtonian parameter via two distance ratios reflecting the lensing mass and dynamical mass respectively, have been proposed to investigate these two parameters simultaneously. Among strong lensing systems with different sources, strongly lensed fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been proposed as precision probes of the universe since the time delay ∼ 10 days between images could be measured extremely precisely because of their short duration of a few milliseconds. In this work, we investigate the ability of strongly lensed FRBs on simultaneously estimating these two parameters via simulations. Take the expected FRB detection rate of upcoming facilities and lensing probability into consideration, it is likely to accumulate 10 lensed FRBs in several years and we find that H0 could be determined to a $\sim 1.5{{\%}}$ precision and γPPN could be constrained to a $\sim 8.7{{\%}}$ precision simultaneously from them. These simultaneous estimations will be helpful for properly reflecting the possible correlation between these two fundamental parameters.

Prospects of strongly lensed fast radio bursts: Simultaneous measurement of post-Newtonian parameter and Hubble constant

The first successful detection of gravitational waves (GWs) opened up a new window to study a realm of the most violent phenomena in the universe, such as coalescences of binary black holes (BH–BH), binary neutron stars (NS–NS), and mixed (BH–NS) systems, which are mostly inaccessible in the electromagnetic window. On the other hand, strong gravitational lensing of distant sources, such as galaxies and quasars, by other massive objects lying closer along the line of sight has become a powerful tool in cosmology and astrophysics. With the increasing sensitivity of the new generation of GW detectors, the chances to detect a strongly lensed GW signal are increasing. When GWs are strongly lensed, magnification of the signal intensity is expected, unveiling binary compact objects otherwise too distant to be detected. Such systems are important for their plethora of applications. Lensed GWs can be a test for general relativity, constrain mass distribution in galaxies or galaxy clusters, and provide cosmography information independently of the local cosmic ladders. In this review, we will provide a theoretical background of the gravitational lensing of GWs, including the wave optics regime, which becomes important in this context. Then we will describe the possible cosmological and astrophysical insight hidden in these signals, and present the state-of-the-art searches of lensed GWs in the present and future GW observatories.

Strong Gravitational Lensing of Gravitational Waves: A Review

Strong gravitational lensing by galaxies provides us with a unique opportunity to understand the nature of gravity on galactic and extra-galactic scales. In this paper, we propose a new multimessenger approach using data from both gravitational wave (GW) and the corresponding electromagnetic (EM) counterpart to infer the constraint of the modified gravity (MG) theory denoted by the scale dependent phenomenological parameter. To demonstrate the robustness of this approach, we calculate the time-delay predictions by choosing various values of the phenomenological parameters and then compare them with that from the general relativity (GR). For the third generation ground-based GW observatory, with one typical strongly lensed GW+EM event, and assuming that the dominated error from the stellar velocity dispersions is 5\%, the GW time-delay data can distinguish an 18\% MG effect on a scale of tens of kiloparsecs with a $68\%$ confidence level. Assuming GR and a Singular Isothermal Sphere mass model, there exists a simplified consistency relationship between time-delay and imaging data. This relationship does not require for the velocity dispersion measurement, and hence can avoid major uncertainties. By using this relationship, the multimessenger approach is able to distinguish an $8\%$ MG effect. Our results show that the GW multimessenger approach can play an important role in revealing the nature of gravity on the galactic and extra-galactic scales.
