Strategies for bubble removal in electrochemical systems

Design and preparation of an efficient and nonprecious cocatalysts, with structural features and functionality necessary for improving photocatalytic performance of semiconductors, remain a formidable challenge until now. Herein, for the first time, a novel CoP cocatalyst with single-atom phosphorus vacancies defects (CoP-Vp ) is synthesized and coupled with Cd0.5 Zn0.5 S to build CoP-Vp @Cd0.5 Zn0.5 S (CoP-Vp @CZS) heterojunctions photocatalysts via a liquid phase corrosion method following by an in suit growth process. The nanohybrids deliver an attractive photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 2.05 mmol h-1 30 mg-1 under visible-light irradiation, which is 14.66 times higher than that of the pristine ZCS samples. As expected, CoP-Vp further enhances the charge-separation efficiency of ZCS, in addition to the improvement of the electron transfer efficiency, which is confirmed by the ultrafast spectroscopies. Mechanism studies based on density functional theory calculations verify that Co atoms adjacent with single-atom Vp play the key role in translation, rotation, and transformation of electrons for H2 O reduction. This scalable strategy focusing defect engineering provides a new insight into designing the highly active cocatalysts to boost the photocatalytic application.

Single-Atom Phosphorus Defects Decorated CoP Cocatalyst Boosts Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation Performance of Cd0.5 Zn0.5 S by Directed Separating the Photogenerated Carriers.

Hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis faces several challenges, one of which involves the development of electrocatalysts with high catalytic performance. Here, surface amorphization and morphology engineering are combined to design a novel electrocatalyst for highly‐efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The surface‐amorphized MoO2/Ni3(PO4)2 microcolumns supported on nickel foam (SA‐MoO2/Ni3(PO4)2/NF) display remarkable performance with low overpotentials of 34 and 46 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH and alkaline seawater, respectively. In addition, the alkaline electrolysis cell (AEC) integrated with SA‐MoO2/Ni3(PO4)2/NF as the cathode and Ni foam as the anode achieves a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at 1.87 V in 6 m KOH seawater at 60 °C, superior to that of industrial NiMo electrode as cathode (2.05 V). DFT calculations demonstrate that the surface amorphous layer (MoOx) improves the hydrogen adsorption energy of sample and reduces the energy barrier of water dissociation. It is found that substantial improvement in catalytic performance stems from the synergistic effect between surface amorphization and unique microcolumn morphology. These findings may provide insights into combining surface amorphization and morphology engineering strategies to enhance catalytic performance and pave the way for the development of highly efficient seawater HER electrocatalysts.

Greatly Boosting Seawater Hydrogen Evolution by Surface Amorphization and Morphology Engineering on MoO2/Ni3(PO4)2

Construction of interface-engineered coral-like nickel phosphide@cerium oxide hybrid nanoarrays to boost electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance in alkaline water/seawater electrolytes

A reasonable design of excellent bifunctional catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an effective strategy for large-scale hydrogen production. In this study, a two-stage electrodeposition method was used to design and prepare a crystalline-amorphous structure CoMo-P layered particles of different sizes on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. Electron rearrangement at the Co/Co3Mo2P@CoMoO4 heterogeneous interface can reduce the reaction energy barrier for HER and OER, and accelerate the catalytic reaction kinetics. The doping of Mo can promote the synergistic effect between Co and Mo, thereby optimizing the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption. This layered arrangement of different size particles greatly improves the active area of the catalyst, thus increasing the number of active sites of the catalyst. Therefore, the prepared transition metal phosphides (TMPs) CoMo-P/NF catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity and electrolytic water stability in alkaline media. In 1 M KOH solution, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm−2 only required overpotentials of 40 mV for HER and 278 mV for OER, respectively. The cell voltage required for the CoMo-P/NF||CoMo-P/NF electrolytic cell is only 1.53 V at 10 mA cm−2 without iR compensation. The excellent catalytic activity and stability of the CoMo-P/NF catalyst are attributed to its unique layered particle structure, rich crystalline-amorphous interface active sites, and the mechanical stability achieved by firmly anchoring the catalyst to the nickel foam. This study provides a reference for the rapid, efficient, and environmentally friendly preparation of high-activity water splitting catalysts with large surface areas. 

Designing layered arrangement of cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic phosphide particles with different sizes on Ni foam for efficient overall water splitting

We study carbon-reduction pledges of publicly traded U.S. oil exploration and production (E&P) companies. Of the 69 firms in the sample, 18 have committed to net-zero carbon targets, 14 have announced significant emissions cuts, whereas the remaining 37 firms have not announced any formal commitment to reduce emissions. We find that a firm’s energy production and ownership by BlackRock is positively associated with its decision to announce a net-zero pledge or significant emission cuts. E&P firms are likely to announce such commitments after Engine No. 1 proposed its slate of directors for Exxon’s board. The stock market reacts more negatively to net-zero pledges relative to emission-reduction pledges on average. However, the market reaction is related to the quality and credibility of these pledges. In particular, we find that the negative market reaction to net-zero pledges is mainly driven by firms with post-2030 target years relative to firms that commit to achieving net zero by 2030. We also find that the market reacts more negatively to net-zero pledges when the firm does not show the strength of its commitment via the presence of a board-level committee to monitor the company’s progress toward its emission goals or when the top management’s pay is not linked to specific emission reduction goals. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tensile and compressive stresses generated in the alveolar bone proper regulate site-specific cellular and functional changes in osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Thirty-two 13-week-old male mice were randomly divided into four groups: two experimental groups with vertical loading obliquely from the palatal side to the buccal side of the maxillary molar (0.9 N) 30 min per day for 8 or 15 days and unloaded controls (n = 8). Calcein and alizarin were administered 8 and 2 days before euthanization, respectively, to detect the time of bone formation. Undecalcified sections parallel to the occlusal plane were prepared on the palatal root and the surrounding alveolar bone in the middle of the root length. The alveolar perimeter was divided into 12 equal regions for site analysis, and the bone histomorphometric parameters were obtained for each region. Data from in vivo microfocus computed tomography were used to construct animal-specific finite element models. 2D stress distribution images were overlain on histology images obtained from the same location. Significant differences in the total perimeter between groups and between loading and unloading in each region were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05). Osteoclast counts and the alizarin label ratio were significantly higher in the loaded group than in the unloaded group in regions where the maximum von Mises and principal tensile stresses were the highest along the perimeter. The label ratio of calcein was significantly lower in the 8-day loaded group than in the unloaded group, indicating that the calcein-labeled surface was resorbed by osteoclasts that appeared during the loading period. The effect of loading was mitigated by an increase in the maximum principal compressive stress. We conclude that bone resorption and bone formation are functions of site-specific tension and compression in the alveolar bone proper, confirming our hypothesis. This finding is critical for the advancement of diagnosis and treatment planning in clinical dentistry.
