MXene nanosheets are susceptible to self-accumulation during operation, which significantly hampers their application. However, this issue can be effectively addressed through the introduction of intercalation materials. In this study, an MXene/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (MGC) film is prepared using vacuum-assisted filtration. CNTs and rGO nanosheets, as intercalation materials, play a crucial role in forming a stable interlayer structure with MXene nanosheets, resulting in an expansion of the MXene layer spacing and the creation of multi-directional stable ion transport channels. Consequently, a larger number of ion-accessible active sites are exposed. The prepared MGC film exhibits an impressive specific capacitance of 463.5F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with the MGC film as the negative electrode and MnO2 as the positive electrode demonstrates a large voltage window of 1.7 V, a high energy density of 33.95 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 814.8 W kg−1, and an outstanding capacitance retention rate of 92.9% after 8000 cycles at 3 A g−1. The optimization strategy for MGC electrodes not only showcases the feasibility of MXene development but also provides crucial technical support for the application of MXene in the emerging generation of portable and flexible wearable energy storage devices.

Recent energy research focuses on the efficiency enhancement of supercapacitor devices for multipurpose applications. Several materials have been used as electrode materials to achieve the maximum specific capacitance. The present review article concludes with three different types of materials recently used to enhance the efficiency of supercapacitors. The first type involves carbon-based materials for storage and supercapacitor applications. The carbon materials could be obtained naturally and synthesized manually based on need. The additional advantage of carbon material is these materials can be obtained from natural sources. The second type discusses the recent advances in metal oxide materials for high-performance supercapacitors. The metal oxide materials are involved in different types of attachment through the bi-tri metallic bonding, which enhances the specific capacitance. The third type involves recently advanced materials for high energy and power density application. The power and energy density of the materials is enhanced by the surface modification of the materials. In recent days, the MXene and nanocomposite materials seem to be an appropriate material to increase the power and energy density of the device. The modification and surface treatment of respective materials could enhance the specific capacitance of the material.

An Overview of Active Electrode Materials for the Efficient High-Performance Supercapacitor Application

Currently, the limited energy density constrains potential applications of flexible supercapacitors. Expanding the voltage window is an effective solution, which is strongly dependent on the design of the electrode material. Herein, hierarchical graphene oxide (GO)/manganese dioxide (MnO2)/cobalt-nickel layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) onto activated carbon cloth (CC/GMCN) electrodes are fabricated through a sequential deposition approach. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that GO, MnO2 and CoNi-LDH can be tightly bound together by electrostatic interactions, declaring the construction of this triple heterogeneous structure is efficient and feasible. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor, using the CC/GMCN as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode, exhibits a voltage window of 1.9 V, a specific capacitance of 163.95 F/g at 1 A/g, along with an energy density of 82.12 W h kg−1 at a power density of 949.97 W kg−1. Furthermore, the device displays exceptional bending resistance, with the specific capacitance retaining 94.73 % after undergoing 1000 bending cycles. After 10,000 charging and discharging cycles, the device maintains a capacity retention of 92.62 % and sustains an almost 100 % coulombic efficiency. The prepared device underscores the promising real-world applications, and this research introduces an effective avenue for advancing the field of next-generation flexible supercapacitors.
