As one of the drainage pipes widely used in the world, the removal of pollutant deposition in PVC drainage pipe is the key problem. In this paper, a structural resonance technique is proposed to accelerate the removal of pipeline sediments. Considering the sedimentary layer in PVC pipe is mainly concentrated on the inner pipe wall on the lower side, the composite beam model is introduced to describe the interaction between sediment layer and PVC pipe in this paper. Hamilton's principle is introduced to establish the governing equations of the deposited layer-PVC material composite beam, and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the system are analyzed and the resonance conditions are calculated. So far, several possible resonance conditions have been found theoretically. The ideal one has been selected by numerical simulation and experiment measures. And then, the structure is optimized by discussing the influence of random motion on the deposition layer-PVC composite beam. Finally, the Abaqus finite element software is used for simulation verification. The results of numerical simulation and experiment data indicate that the resonance technique for cleaning PVC drainage pipe pollution is effective and the ideal condition exits in the several conditions which have been deduced by theoretical calculation. • Resonance technique is proposed to accelerate the removal of pipeline sediments. • Nonlinear dynamic characteristics and resonance conditions are analyzed. • Several possible resonance conditions have been found theoretically. • The structure is optimized by discussing the influence of random motion. • Simulation and experiment data indicate the resonance technique is effective. 

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of the deposited layer-PVC composite structure: A new way for cleaning PVC drainage pipe pollution

The practice of deep-braced excavation in congested urban environments involves frequently buried pipelines, which can exert a significant effect on the performance of the excavation. The objective of this paper is to investigate the performance of a 12.5-m-deep-braced excavation spanned by two shallowly buried large-diameter pressurized pipelines. A suspension structure is installed within the excavation to protect the in situ pipelines during the construction. The excavation performance is investigated by performing a three-dimensional finite element analysis. The finite element method is verified based on the observations at the site. The results indicate that, as expected, the excavation support structures displace together with varying degrees of deformation toward the excavated area. The strut shear forces are found to be distributed axially in linear manners, while the strut bending moments are in symmetric manners. The benefit of using the proposed pipeline suspension structure is demonstrated. By using this structure, pipeline deformation can be well controlled, and the structural integrity and safety of the pipelines can be ensured. This benefit depends on the convenient operation in that the elevation of the cork base of the pipeline suspension structure is stably lowered during the construction process.

Stability of Braced Excavation Underneath Crossing Underground Large Pressurized Pipelines

Due to the different material composition and deposition conditions, the undisturbed clay presents different degree of structure. Because of the existence of structure, the undisturbed clay has structural yield stress. When the stress level exceeds the structural yield stress, the stress-strain relation of undisturbed clay has typical softening characteristics. To explore the constitutive relation of undisturbed soil, triaxial consolidation and drainage tests were carried out on undisturbed and remolded soils of structural clay in Zhanjiang Formation in China, and the stress-strain relations under different confining pressures were obtained. By analyzing the structural failure process of undisturbed clay, Weibull distribution was introduced to describe the strength distribution of each point in undisturbed clay, and the structural failure coefficient of undisturbed clay was established during the loading process. Based on the elastic theory and structural failure coefficient, a constitutive model considering the structural failure of clay was proposed, and the method to determine the model parameters was given. The model was used to simulate the experimental data in this paper and the reference, and the validity of the model was verified. The results show that the model can well simulate the softening effect of structural clay during loading.

A Constitutive Model of Clay Considering Structural Failure

This paper aims to address the issue of disturbance caused by excavation tunnel construction on nearby dense pipelines. Relying on the actual project of Nanchang Metro, the three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation method is used to establish a multi-condition numerical model. At the same time, key influencing factors such as the clear distance, intersection angle, surrounding rock parameter, and construction method are considered. The mechanical response of the dense pipeline adjacent to the dug tunnel was systematically studied, and the influence of key factors on the mechanical behavior of the pipeline was analyzed. The results show that when using the CRD method for construction and grouting reinforcement of the surrounding strata of the tunnel, the maximum settlement of the vault is located at the vault of the right guide tunnel, and the maximum settlement value is located at the bottom of the rainwater pipe directly above the tunnel. The vertical displacement, maximum principal stress, and minimum principal stress of the pipeline are arranged in descending order for the full-face, stepped method, and CRD method. The greater the disturbance to the soil caused by the construction method, the more unfavorable the effect on the pipeline.

Study on the Mechanical Response of a Dense Pipeline Adjacent to the Shallow Tunnel

This paper explores a solution to safeguard buried pipes located near constructions in the Al-Bisri region of Assiut Governorate by utilizing the concept of the characteristic damage state. This issue has escalated due to the increasing rate of construction activity near pipelines, resulting in a multitude of legal disputes. This study investigates the behavior of buried pipes when influenced by newly constructed buildings using the finite element method. The paper employs two-dimensional models of a 12-story reinforced concrete building with a raft foundation and a series of piles supporting the buried pipe. In this study, we used the PLAXIS software, a 2D plane strain program, to conduct numerical investigations. The soil was idealized using the Mohr–Coulomb model with a 15-node triangular element, while the piles and structures were idealized with a five-node isoperimetric beam element. The point of contact between the beam and the soil was represented by the interface element. Our research examined the distance between the pipe and the footing edge and the distance between the piles and the footing edge. The finite element model results provided nodal displacements and element straining actions for analysis. The results shed light on the behavior of the sheet pile wall and sewage pipe in various situations. The largest bending moment in the sewage pipe was seen in the absence of piling, in contrast, to pile support at Rx = 0.75. The bending moment in the pipe expanded and always occurred at the same location as Rx rose. The clay layer next to the pipe’s lateral deformation was significantly reduced after piling, with the greatest deformation occurring at Rx = 0.

An Investigation into the Influence of a New Building on the Response of a Sheet Pile Wall Adjacent to an Existing Buried Pipe

Urban underground pipelines undertake many tasks closely related to people’s daily life and production, such as water supply, drainage, gas supply, and power supply. Metro projects are usually located in areas with dense underground pipelines; therefore, in the construction process of deep-foundation metro pit, some measures should be taken to protect the safety of underground pipelines. Under the engineering background of the Jiangbei foundation pit of the Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel, the influence of soil disturbance caused by deep-foundation pit excavation is first simulated using the ABAQUS software on the displacement of underground pipelines and the dangerous area of underground pipelines is analyzed. Second, the most disadvantageous combination is analyzed for the risk factors of pipelines under the influences of multiple risk factors. Finally, a systematic additional partial reinforcement scheme (APRS) is proposed from the aspects of safety and economy to protect the safety of underground pipelines in the dangerous areas with greater risk. The results of measurement prove that the APRS is effective for pipeline protection and can provide reference for similar problems.
