Adaptive torsional vibration active control for hybrid electric powertrains during start-up based on model prediction:

The battery electric vehicles with dual-motor coupling drive system have serious torsional vibration problems when the driving torque changes rapidly. This paper targets at reducing the negative effect of the torsional vibration with an active control strategy. The torsional vibration model of the dual-motor coupling drive system is established through the lumped mass method. A four-inertia modeling method which can reflect the powertrain configuration characteristics is proposed, by simplifying the traditional lumped mass model, and the feasibility is verified based on the error comparing of the torsional vibration characteristics between the two models. Combined Kalman filter theory, PID control theory and fuzzy control theory, a real-time self-tuning active control strategy is proposed to compensate motor torque by considering vehicle acceleration as the control input. Finally, the four-inertia model with the control strategy is simulated under such conditions as the torque abrupt change and the C-WTVC driving cycle. The simulation results indicated that the proposed active control strategy performs well in the torsional vibration suppression and the control effect is robust to the different structural parameters.

Development and control of an active torsional vibration damper for vehicle powertrains

Creating digital twins of industrial equipment requires the development of adequate virtual models, and the calculation of their parameters is a complex scientific and practical problem. To configure and digitally commission automated drives, two-mass electromechanical system models are used. A promising area in which to implement such models is the development of digital shadows, namely drive position observers. Connecting virtual models for online data exchange predetermines the tightening of requirements for their parameter calculation accuracy. Therefore, developing accessible techniques for calculating electromechanical system coordinates is an urgent problem. These parameters are most accurately defined by experiments. The contribution of this paper is the proposition of a method for defining the two-mass system model parameters using the oscillograms obtained in the operating and emergency modes. The method is developed for the horizontal stand drives of a plate mill 5000 and is supported by numerical examples. The technique is universal and comprises calculating the rotating mass inertia torques, elastic stiffness and oscillation damping coefficients, and the time constants of the motor air gap torque control loop. The obtained results have been applied to the development of the elastic torque observer of the rolling stand’s electromechanical system. A satisfactory coordinate recovery accuracy has been approved for both open and closed angular gaps in mechanical joints. Recommendations are given for the use of the method in developing process parameter control algorithms based on automated drive position observers. This contributes to the development of the theory and practice of building digital control systems and the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concept in industrial companies.

Method for Defining Parameters of Electromechanical System Model as Part of Digital Twin of Rolling Mill

The problem of damping torsional vibrations of the crankshaft of a multi-cylinder engine is very important from the point of view of the durability and operational reliability of the drive unit. Over the years, attempts have been made to eliminate these vibrations and the phenomena accompanying them using various methods. One of the methods that effectively increases the durability and reliability of the drive unit is the use of a torsional vibration damper. The torsional vibration damper is designed and selected individually for a given drive system. A well-selected damper reduces the amplitude of the torsional vibrations of the shaft in the entire operating speed range of the engine. This paper proposes a thermo-hydrodynamic model of a viscous torsional vibration damper that enables the determination of the correct operating temperature range of the damper. The input parameters for the model, in particular the angular velocities of the damper elements as well as the geometric and mass dimensions of the damper were determined on a test stand equipped with a six-cylinder diesel engine equipped with a factory torsional vibration damper. The damper surface operating temperatures used in model verification were measured with a laser pyrometer. The presented comparative analysis of the results obtained numerically (theoretically) and the results obtained experimentally allow us to conclude that the proposed damper model gives an appropriate approximation to reality and can be used in the process of selecting a damper for the drive unit.

Application of a Thermo-Hydrodynamic Model of a Viscous Torsional Vibration Damper to Determining Its Operating Temperature in a Steady State

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) might cause new noise vibration and harshness (NVH) problems, due to their complex powertrain systems. Therefore, in this paper, a new longitudinal dynamic simulation model of a series-parallel hybrid electric bus with an active torsional vibration control module is proposed. First, the schematic diagrams of the simulation model architecture and the active control strategy are given, and the dynamic models of the main components are introduced. Second, taking advantage of the characteristics of hybrid systems, a method of determining the key dynamic parameters by a bench test is proposed. Finally, in a typical bus-driving cycle for Chinese urban conditions, time domain and frequency domain processing methods are used to analyze vehicle body jerk, fluctuation of rotational speed, and torsional angle of the key components. The results show that the active control method can greatly improve the system’s torsional vibration performance when switching modes and at resonance.
